Conference How digitalization changes cities: Innovations for the urban economy of tomorrow. Workshop 4: Scaling up urban energy pilots tenantable electricity: efficient energy transition for multi-family-houses Dr. Jens Matics, September 6 th, Witten
C o n t e n t 1) The German energy transition: current plant locations 2) Bringing the energy transition into the city 3) Public sponsorship for tenantable electricity 4) Benefits and new business models 5) New energy services to enable tenantable electricity 6) Scaling opportunities: How can you participate? 2
T h e G e r m a n e n e r g y t r a n s i t i o n : c u r r e n t p l a n t l o c a t i o n s By looking into statistics and driving through the country it is getting clear: The German energy transition is mainly taking place in rural large-scale plants and parks suburban areas far away from the city-centers. Quelle: airportpark-berlin-neuhardenberg.de Quelle: faz.de Quelle: umweltbundesamt.de 3
B r i n g i n g t h e e n e r g y t r a n s i t i o n i n t o t h e c i t y tenantable electricity: photovoltaic plant is installed on multi-family-house which can also include retail areas, office areas, business enterprises the electricity is produced environmental friendly and local the better part of the produced electricity is used within the building the electricity has not been transported across the public electrical grid many taxes and public dues do not occur the locally produced electricity is cheaper than conventional electricity from the grid Quelle: city-energy.de 4
P u b l i c s p o n s o r s h i p f o r t e n a n t a b l e e l e c t r i c i t y The law of tenantable electricity (Mieterstrom-Gesetz) has been introduced in July 2017 by the German government: a bonus is paid for the locally used electricity which has been produced in the PV-plant. For a plant up to 10 kw the bonus currently is 3,81 ct/ kwh the maximal PV-size for tenantable electricity is 100 kw a maximum of 500 MW per year is supported (this is equal to about plants) 40% of the building area needs to be housing space The electricity price must be at least 10% cheaper than the local supplier tariff. so price attractiveness is guaranteed in the law. 5
B e n e f i t s a n d n e w b u s i n e s s m o d e l s Benefits: tenants: get a green and cheap electricity tariff. Long term independence from general electricity price trends. landlords / housing societies: increase the attractiveness and value of their building, address new target groups architects/ planners: comply with energy efficiency standards and criteria for house-financing (e.g. KfW-Effizienzhaus) local handcrafts: take part at an innovative product segment within the energy transition New business models: landlords / housing societies: generate an additional income source by lease of the roof / delivery of electricity utilities: develop a new and local market segment within the energy transition energy service providers: support the business model generation, plant realization and operation of tenantable electricity 6
N e w e n e r g y s e r v i c e s t o e n a b l e t e n a n t a b l e e l e c t r i c i t y 3 packages to satisfy different customer requirements: full service existing PV-plant small house We o lease your roof o plan & realize the PV-plant o supply electricity to the house-parties We o lease your PV-plant o supply electricity to the house-parties We o buy your surplus electricity o supply electricity to the house-parties white-label all packages also available as white-label product 7
S c a l i n g o p p o r t u n i t i e s : H o w c a n y o u p a r t i c i p a t e? the photovoltaic technology has proven its efficiency since many years public support Mieterstrom-Gesetz has been introduced in July 2017 new business models with benefits for tenants, landlords, housing societies, architects and utilities are developed energy services to enable tenantable electricity are available Talk with us to start tenantable electricity-projects and bring the energy transition into your city! 8
