2. Renewable Energies driven by: People, communities & medium sized companies
Renewable Energies Structural change by community involvement 40% of RE in community / local residents hands Additional drive from energy co-operatives
Boom in local energy cooperatives Almost 600 energy cooperatives have been registered in Germany by the end of 2011 To date, the focus had been mainly on small PV systems, but currently there is a strong interest in wind power
3. juwi Solutions for Communities
juwi offers communities various options Target group Model Summary Local residents Communities Municipal utilities Green savings bond Local energy Local energy cooperatives Community power Community participation Municipal utility participation Through the cooperation of juwi and local banks, local residents can benefit from renewable energy projects by purchasing wind- or solarsavings bonds. juwi offers residents local to a project affordable, clean and locallyproduced electricity. juwi works with local energy cooperatives and supports their creation. This is a way for local residents to participate in renewable energy projects. juwi supplies community assets with affordable, clean and locallyproduced eco-friendly power. Communities can invest directly in wind or solar projects or purchase individual turbines or parts of solar farms. In many projects, juwi works closely with municipal utilities ( Stadtwerken ). Participation models range from buying individual projects to joint development in strategic partnerships.
Local delivery of wind power for German municipality Wörrstadt Juwi offered the municipality a power contract in 2009 The energy mix contains 100% Renewable Energies with approx. 15% from local wind power The project resulted in support for a wind park Wind park Wörrstadt Municipality and local community
Local delivery of wind power for Households Wind turbines produce local energy and deliver it to private households 100% renewable electricity: high wind power share complemented by hydro power Attractive price and clear price stability Reduced dependence on imported energy The project increased the acceptance of a wind park
Integrated Renewable Energy Landscape at Morbach Morbach Former largest US army ammunition in Europe Conversion into a renewable energy landscape started in Wind power - photovoltaic power - biogas power - wood pellets production plant - co-generation unit Total capacity of 29.6 MW and 50 million kwh p.a. Meets the demand of households German Solar Award in 2007 Specially-selected location in the Land of Ideas in
Cooperation with energy co-operatives Model: Cooperation agreement with co-op Joint consultation with local community increases residents support Option A: Turnkey purchase of a wind turbine Option B: Investment by Co-op in wind park
Business model for local energy cooperatives Cooperative as operator Predevelopment Project development Implementation Co-op No risk exposure Regular information / involvement High transparency during planning process Joint communication juwi Full risk cover Due Diligence, yield assessment, siting. Overall responsibility for project development Affordable and fast purchase of turbines, moduels etc. via frame agreement Pre-financing Overall responsibility for swift implementation Financing Purchase or purchase stake in project On request : project financing Turbine operation Co-op as operator (or project partner) On request : technical and commercial management 22
Trend: cooperatives enter wind power Opportunities and challenges Opportunities for cooperatives Wind energy as central for Energy Transformation Large development potential still exist in Germany Great potential for local value creation Challenge for co-operatives Longer project cycle times (ca. 3 years) High risks in planning process many projects are stopped in Due Diligence phase Pre-financing of development is required Considerably higher investment than rooftop PV projects
Financing of a wind park by a co-operative Example solution for larger RE-projects Co-op acquires an SPV/Ltd. Company for each project Members can invest in projects via a subordinated loan (and possibly others) Dividends for members share success and sustainability of the project Co-operative company Wind project 1 Ltd. Wind project 2 Ltd. Solar project 1 Ltd.
