European Environment Agency Copyright EEA, Copenhagen, (2004) Reinforcing and serving EU energy internal markets EU would strongly benefits from an Strategic Energy Technology Plan
Key opportunities of Smart Power Networks qsecurity of supply efficient mix of centralised with decentralised operation allows the use of domestic energy resources, whilst maintaining a high level of reliability and quality of supply. qclimate change higher efficiency in energy transport and use of RES and cleaner Distributed Generation, incl. CHP, results in a real contribution to reduce emissions. qcompetitiveness of European Industry stimulate innovation of network and associated ICT represents a positive effect, both in the EU and worldwide.

Microgrids management Project MORE MICROGRIDS validations at seven places
UK and Spain to host feasibility and validation phase of fenix with new tools to deal with a more complex system in the most efficient way
Main lessons learned so far FP5&6 funded research Smart Power Networks 50+ Projects supported Ł EC 100M such as: DISPOWER, EU-DEEP, FENIX, MICROGRIDS, etc Main technical issues are reliability, accessibility and flexibility, but a large number of non-technical barriers must be addressed as well. Real-time information and communication are critical: few possible concepts for smart power grids, but final solutions still unclear. Enabling technologies and cross cutting solutions should be further considered. Co-operation and co-ordination of all stakeholders in the context of the TP-SmartGrids: success mobilisation of efforts at European level towards a comprehensive strategy
Technology Platform
PROPOSED GOALS Smart energy networks FP7- Priority 5. ENERGY: Specific Programme Cooperation Contribute to the transition the current electricity grids into a resilient and interactive service network. Remove the obstacles to the large-scale integration of RES & DG. Develop and demonstrate key enabling technologies, including energy storage
