Sustainability Initiatives in Airport Buildings Peter Koulos Director, Transport
With an increased focus on energy performance, system life and operational management in airport buildings, this presentation will look at initiatives for assessing and identifying opportunities for improved energy management and return on investment on both existing and new buildings.
Sustainability Imperatives What defines sustainability?
Sustainability Imperatives Nearly all organisations today are looking at sustainability, addressing the following areas (or some variant of this): Economic Operational Environmental Social Almost two-thirds of non-aeronautical revenue is generated through property and retail at airports Quote from Dr Rafael Echevarne ACI Director, Economics & Programme Development
Sustainability Imperatives Of these four sustainability imperatives, the one area that offers significant opportunities for improvement is Environmental, which covers the following areas: Energy Emissions Water Waste Noise
How Sustainable are You? Setting the benchmark to assess sustainability
How Sustainable are You? Before you can implement any initiatives, you need to benchmark what you have: Measure Monitor Report Feedback Improve Image from Los Angeles World Airports Sustainability Plan April 2008
Strategies to start measuring sustainability Identify the key areas of opportunity Do I have the information available to make an informed decision? What can provide a quick return? What will require strategic planning? Assess the alternatives Conduct life cycle analysis Review any operational impacts Develop a strategy for implementation Cost planning Implementation Delivery and operation
Frameworks and Compliance Requirements Australian and International context
All leased federal airports (except for Tennant Creek and Mount Isa) are subject to a planning framework in the Airports Act 1996 (the Airports Act). As part of the planning framework, airports are required to prepare a Master Plan that incorporates an Environment Strategy. The Master Plan is a 20 year strategic vision for the airport site which is renewed every five years Excerpt from Dept. Of Infrastructure & Transport website -
Frameworks & Compliance Requirements As part of establishing your sustainability initiatives reference should be made to existing frameworks: Australia Green Star Communities NABERS (Buildings Offices/Hotels) International General Buildings LEED BREEAM Green Mark GRI Airport Focussed Airport Carbon Accreditation Clean Airport Partnership Sustainable Aviation Guidance Alliance
Sustainability Initiatives What is the industry doing?
Don t discount the basic initiatives. These can offer the platform for expansion and conversion to significant improvement
Sustainability Initiatives Sustainability vs Customer Experience = $$$ Return on Investment Any sustainability initiative needs to be financially viable. Capital Cost vs Operational Cost Retro-fit impacts Operational downtime in a live environment: Cut over requirements Cost of planning & implementation
Sustainability Initiatives Energy Lighting LED technology (maturing) Lighting control optimisation Dimming, zoning Natural light & control Mechanical Systems Control (tuning) Zoning (mechanical & fire) Gate zoning Temperature Set-points (transit environment) Renewable energy PV, solar, wind Lift/Escalator operation Energy efficient replacement equipment Performance KPIs Minimum Standards Co/Tri-Generation Systems Waste water re-use Power distribution management
Sustainability Initiatives Water Rainwater harvesting & recycled water 3 rd pipe arrangement Green roofs Irrigation Fire fighting Cooling Water saving devices Taps Low flush toilets Solar hot water
Sustainability Initiatives Waste Establishment of Materials Recovery Facilities Recyclables Compost Fuels Sell or re-use Image from Chicago Dept. Of Aviation A Sustainable Path Report pg 33
Sustainability Initiatives Noise & Emissions Traffic flows transport carbon Alternative Fuels CNG & Hybrid Vehicles Electric vehicles Vehicle fleet management Vehicle consolidation Other considerations Passenger experience Flow & Connectivity Technology Building Design Shading Glazing Usage of spaces
Sustainability Initiatives Other considerations Retail Retail design standards Sustainability guidelines Aircraft Technology Ground Power PCA systems Supply chain management Sourcing & disposal Impacts of Technology Increased service demand Increased power consumption On site data centres Redundancy requirements Energy performance
What to Report? Reporting practices and promotion
Climate change is currently on top of the international agenda, heightening both environment awareness as well as the expectations from all organizations to communicate about their environmental, economic and social performance to their stakeholders. The potentially large environmental impact of airports and the aviation industry, in general, has led to increasing demands from stakeholders for companies to report on their sustainability performance. Excerpt from GRI Research and Development Series - A Snapshot of Sustainability Reporting In the Airports Sector
Reporting GRI(Global Reporting Initiative) An established reporting framework to present sustainability objectives, targets and results GRI undertook an assessment of airport facilities in 2008 Look at setting normalised benchmarks Excerpt from GRI Research and Development Series - A Snapshot of Sustainability Reporting In the Airports Sector
Reporting Excerpt from GRI Research and Development Series - A Snapshot of Sustainability Reporting In the Airports Sector
Promote what you do Internal education Promote sustainability Seek feedback Walk the talk Marketing opportunities Promote the initiatives Promote the successes
Because of the expanse of sustainability, it must be embraced by all levels of an organisation to be effective. Initially it needs to be continually benchmarked. Clear, measureable and achievable objectives need to be defined that can be delivered on, reported on and improved over time
