4 International goals for sustainable maritime transport UNFCCC COP 21 Paris Agreement: to limit global temperature rise this century 2 degrees below Celsius above pre-industrial levels (shipping and aviation not included) EU has ambitious targets for reduction of shipping emissions that it promotes in IMO IMO capped sulphur content in fuels used by ships (Annex VI to MARPOL) IMO agreed on a global data collection system and approved the Roadmap for developing a comprehensive IMO Strategy on the reduction of GHG emissions from ships, which entails the adoption of an initial Strategy (April 2018) and a revised Strategy (spring 2023)

5 EU goals for sustainable maritime transport White Paper for Transport 2011 foresees at least 40% cut in shipping emissions by 2050 CO 2 reduction Directive (EU) 2016/802 ('Sulphur Directive ): puts cap on the maximum Sulphur content of gas oils, heavy fuel oil in land-based applications and marine fuels Regulation (EU) 2015/757 on the monitoring, reporting and verification of carbon dioxide emissions from maritime transport (MRV Regulation): requires ship owners and operators to annually monitor, report and verify CO2 emissions for vessels larger than 5,000 gross tonnage (GT) calling at any EU and EFTA (Norway and Iceland) ports
