Examples of International Collaboration in Bilateral Research Studies GERMANY - ISRAEL BMBF-MOST Project ( ) Research on AOP (Ozonation - hydrogen peroxide) and SAT (Soil Aquifer Treatment) of secondary effluents for the removal of micro pollutants in wastewater and the prevention of anoxic cell conditions in the SAT system. The project is a joint venture between the Tel Aviv University, the Hebrew University, the Water Authority, the Geological Institute and the Technical University of Berlin. FRANCE - ISRAEL Bilateral project ( ) Geochemical and isotope traces of oxidation-reduction, the conveyance of solutes and the interaction of aquifer water with the effluent reclamation system on a large scale. Conducted in collaboration with the Geological Institute in Jerusalem and the French Geological Survey (BRGM). 25
Examples of International Collaboration in Bi-National Research US ISRAEL (BIRD) GE Desalitech (and Mekorot as a subcontractor) The Application- Advanced municipal wastewater treatment The Need- Achieving RO process efficiency: higher rejection with lower energy, higher flux with lower bio-fouling tendency, higher recovery with lower scaling tendency The Technology- Innovative high flux membranes by GE, innovative CCD RO configuration by Desalitech, Benchmark - Multistage RO configuration for comparison by Mekorot, Beta site from Mekorot CANADA ISRAEL (CIIRDF) RealTech Mekorot The Application- UV absorbance monitoring as an indication of organic pollution in drinking water The Need- Distinguishing between abnormal (water quality event) and normal (operational) variation in organic content The Technology- A combination of affordable sensitive monitoring systems by Realtech and EDS (event detection system) developed by Mekorot water quality security and modeling specialists 26
Examples of International Collaboration in Bilateral Research Studies GREECE- ISRAEL Bilateral project ( ) Development of a hybrid process scheme based on a Packed Bed of Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) for organic pollutants adsorption and its non-thermal in-situ regeneration using a novel Advanced Oxidation Process (AOP) based on Iron Nano-Particles (nfe) and hydrogen peroxide H 2 O 2 (Fenton reaction) The project is a joint venture between Mekorot, the Technion, Temak and the Centre for Research and Technology-Hellas [CERTH]. 27
MARSOL Managing and introducing desalinated water into the aquifers (MAR) under scarce and uncertain conditions Goal Examining the impact of recharging desalinated water on the rate of underground infiltration, on the quality of the aquifer and on the rate of proliferation of the recharged water. Benefit A better understanding of the rates of infiltration. In the second stage a flow model will be placed at the Nahaley Menashe Site which, upon completion, will be used by Mekorot as an operational tool as is done today at the Shafdan Partners A German coordinator and 20 partners from Western Europe. 28
DemoWare Improving and demonstrating advanced technologies for reclaiming effluents at the Shafdan site Goal Improving and demonstrating advanced technologies for reclaiming effluents for a variety of uses. Benefit Finding a chain of optimal processes for treating the effluents of the Shafdan from a variety innovative technologies that include: pre-filtration on various levels (wire mesh filtration, UF), AOP processes and desalination that includes optimization, raising the reclamation ratio, reducing energy and chemical consumption. Partners 26 partners including: Veolia, DOW, Thames Water Utilities Limited (TWUL), KWB and more 29
