4 Regulatory Update USCG Three BWMS have USCG Type Approval - more within reach. Extensions will no longer be linked to the vessel dry dock cycle. Owners/operators of vessels with compliance date beyond 2020 should plan to be in compliance on that date. USCG initiated penalty proceeding against an operator for discharging ballast water without the use of an approved USCG BWMS. The updated guidance on extensions can be found in MSIB 03-17

5 Regulatory Update IMO BW Management Convention comes into force in September 2017 IMO s MEPC 70 approved a set of substantial revisions to the G8 Guidelines on equipment testing. Guidelines will be reviewed and revised into a mandatory code at a subsequent session of the committee. BWM Potential exemption using Same Risk areas Experience Building time with no penalization for noncompliance MEPC 71 will offer guidance on sampling and analysis

11 Early Planning for Retrofit Success Choose Integration Engineering firms with experience in BWMS Engage your Integration Engineering firm and Classification Society early Secure contracts with BWTS manufacturers to assure availability and current price levels Choose shipyards with experience in installing chosen system and use for your fleet of ships If you go to a yard with no experience installing your chosen system, expect to have the maker to have to support the yard at an additional cost

12 Other Recommendations Scan every vessel you can, sisters are not always identical Insist on quality equipment and components Predictability of OPEX and life time costs should be considered The Superintendent Engineer must be fully engaged during the yard period Read and understand the installation specification Crew involvement is critical to successful installation and imperative to successful continued operation of the system after installation Preparation + Planning = Financial Savings & Time! Without proper planning an installation will probably end up costing more than you thought it would and take longer than expected.
