What is good or not good? Factory Floor
Factory Floor! Good clean, clear and well marked gangway with separate gangway for people / pedestrians Employees not using the pedestrian gangway! An example of employee behaviour that will only be improved with example from and active intervention by managers, team leaders, safety committee members
Machinery Guarding / Electrical Interlock What is good or not good?
Machinery Guarding / Electrical Interlock Interlocked guard provided X Switch operates in negative mode i.e. no positive/forced break of contacts when guard opened and therefore susceptible to various failure modes e.g. contact weld, spring breakage; also easy to defeat / override as has happened here!
Top Ten Tips when Making Insurance Claims Michael Abbott, MA Claims Support Key Points: Have robust procedures in place in the event of a fire, roadside or workplace accident, etc Take photographs and preserve evidence from the scene Take close ups and distant photographs and include an object to identify scale (eg pen, ruler) Take witness statements what they saw, who said what Retain CCTV images Claims can be made against the business many years later, so retain all records Report incident to insurers, provide them with all relevant documentation and clearly state whether you are making a claim or merely providing information Insurers allocate financial costs against claims (estimates/reserves) so make it clear if, for example, you are only claiming for third party damage Keep up to date with claim trends, issues, market changes, fraud etc
Beyond Behavioural Safety Kevin Hard, Ryder Marsh OCAID Kevin joined Ryder Marsh in 2014 bringing with him a wealth of experience in Leadership and Employee Engagement strategies. Previously he worked in the oilfield in the Middle East and West Africa for 8 years before returning to the UK in 1987 where he set up a successful consultancy business. Kevin is a fellow of Leadership Academy which challenges leaders thinking on engagement and through the National Centre for Strategic Leadership is closely involved in research into neuroscience and the four enablers of engagement i.e. creating a work environment that helps our brains think and perform at their best. Kevin worked closely with a leading strategic risk organisation in China from where he delivered behavioural safety programmes in Henan province which changed work practices there for the first time. Kevin has recently published an Organisational Integrated Improvement model based on Leadership, Engagement and Wellbeing (with Nigel Girling) which has been referenced by many organisations including the HSL/HSE at conference. Key Points: 90% of all accidents caused by human failure but 99% of human failure caused by the prevailing conditions Cultural safety is a process which looks at what drives behaviours in the workplace Best is a Just Culture; where the leadership approach is fair, consistent and authentic, where jobs and the workplace are designed for ease of operation and where workers understand not only what to do but why they are doing it. Consult with the workers actually doing the jobs; they will provide you with valuable input and assist you to establish systems and procedures which are more productive Don t be obsessed with procedures; dispose of those that do not work Be aware that there are multiple perspectives; try to see a problem from the perspective of all concerned Don t overload people with information Be positive and focus on telling people what is being done well rather than always seeking to blame Be aware of the negative consequences of not engaging with staff eg poorer performance, stress, anxiety, versus the positives eg willingness to collaborate and be innovative, increased productivity
Nudging Health and Safety Jenny Lunt, Director of J Lunt Associates Ltd Jenny is Chartered and Registered Health and Organisational Psychologist and Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society. She has nearly twenty years of experience of conducting research, training and consultancy in Health and Safety. Much of that time was as a Principal Psychologist within the Health and Safety Laboratory (agency of the Health and Safety Executive) where she led development of their capability in behaviour change and wellbeing at work. As well as run the business Jenny specialises in the areas of culture and behaviour change in both Health AND Safety and in wellbeing at work. She has been described providing thought leadership on applying innovative new approaches to behaviour change in Health and Safety and regularly speaks at national and international conferences. She is passionate about quality of life at work and believes it fundamental to business success Key Points: Human decision making is governed by two systems: one is sub conscious and automatic, such as when reacting to an activated alarm, the other is aware and deliberate such as taking the decision to override a safety interlock. Nudging is about prompting people to take the right course of action by focusing on the safe and healthy option as the only way eg using colour coding and signage, vivid and dramatic campaigns eg HSE s Shattered Lives etc Use language which focuses on the positive eg highlight a 95% reduction in accidents, rather than a failure to achieve the zero tolerance target Highlight the consequences to workmates and family of following bad practices and being complacent Don t shock people without explaining how to avoid harm As people are influenced by the actions of others, encourage them to adopt safer practices by intimating that their colleagues are already complying Don t adopt a blame culture; people will then be more likely to reveal workplace problems Be fair and do the right thing by the employee provide a safe working environment, reward them appropriately and they will work safely.
