1 Expression of Interest Letter To Applicant Thank you for your interest in volunteering with the Buloke Loddon L2P Learner Driver Mentor program. Volunteers are critical to the success of this initiative and we value your contribution and interest in becoming involved in the program. The L2P Learner Driver Mentor Program is a statewide initiative funded by the state government and managed by VicRoads. The program aims to provide assistance to young people who are facing significant barriers to completing their mandatory 120 hours of supervised on road driving experience through the support of Volunteer Mentors from the community. Who can apply to be a Volunteer Mentor? The Buloke Loddon L2P Program is to be made available to all community members who play, live or work within the Buloke or Loddon shires, who have an interest in mentoring young people, and who satisfy the following eligibility criteria: Aged over 21 years Genuine interest in the well being of young people Ability to develop a friendship with a young person and act as a positive role model Good communication skills Ability to commit to a minimum of 1 hour per week for at least 12 month period A current full Victorian drivers license and good driving history Willingness to undergo the Buloke Loddon L2P Program selection process including interviews and reference checks along with a VicRoads Licence Check, a National Criminal Record Check and Working with Children Check.

2 What do volunteers get out of the program? Volunteering is inherently rewarding. Being able to assist a young person, whom you will grow to know quite well, to achieve their goals and develop safe and lawful driving habits, enhancing the rest of their lives, is incredibly gratifying. It is a great opportunity to give back to your local community by just being yourself, and by sharing a skill that you have worked on for years! Volunteer mentors also receive comprehensive training and ongoing support, and are able to volunteer at times which suit you (and your young person mentee of course!) How do I apply? Mentors are required to undergo an extensive, but not dauntingly large application process. This begins with you the applicant completing the L2P volunteer Expression of Interest form, which is attached to the end of this document. This includes applications for National Police Checks and VicRoads Consent to Release Information and their necessary accompanying documents. If you do not have a Working with Children s Check (WWC) you will need to apply for this through Australia Post, volunteer WWC are free. You will then need to lodge the application, along with a copy of your license and Working with Children s Check, with the L2P Coordinator. These documents and referees will then be reviewed, and an interview with the L2P Coordinator and at least one member of the Steering Committee will take place. Applicants who successfully complete this application and interview process will then undertake compulsory L2P mentor training. Upon successful completion of this training applicants will be accepted into the L2P Program and a Young Person match will be identified. Mentors will be supplied with appropriate information on their young person in order to be able to accept the match. Once accepted the initial meeting between the matches will be arranged through the L2P Coordinator, who will also attend the initial meeting. From here the mentoring process commences. Please do not hesitate to contact the L2P Coordinator if you are having difficulties completing the documentation or have any questions or requests regarding this process. If at any stage during this application the applicant is deemed to be not a right fit for the program and are therefore unsuccessful in the application process they will be notified by mail.

3 POSITION DESCRIPTION FOR MENTORS Position Summary L2P Mentors are responsible for providing driving practice for learner drivers who may have considerable difficulty in gaining access to the required 120 hours of supervised on road experience. This practice will take place in a vehicle provided by the program. The position is a supervising role that parents or other significant adults in the learner s life would otherwise have played. Learner drivers also receive formal driving lessons from a qualified instructor. Responsibilities and Tasks 1. To develop a mutually co-operative and supportive relationship 2. To act as a positive role model 3. To encourage a young person to reach their potential through coaching and support 4. To respect a young person s dignity and right to privacy 5. To consider the safety of the young person and establish appropriate 6. Boundaries/limits for behaviour 7. To maintain regular contact with the L2P Coordinator regarding the progress of the learner driver 8. To participate in ongoing training, social and evaluation activities 9. To make a minimum commitment of twelve months, to be reviewed yearly with the Buloke Loddon L2P Coordinator Qualifications No formal qualifications are necessary. Mentors will undertake the VicRoads Supervising Driver Training that will provide them with the skills required.
