2 POSITION TITLE: Aboriginal Youth and Family Worker (Aboriginal Child Youth Family) Position Status: Fixed Term Contract June Macarthur Family and Youth Services considers that being Aboriginal or a Torres Strait Islander is a genuine occupational requirement for this position under s 14 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 (NSW). Location: 16 King Street Campbelltown NSW 2560 There will be variable sites of work dependent on service delivery needs. Responsible to: The Macarthur Family and Youth Services, Team Leader (Nabu) Direct Reports: None Pay Level: Pay Level: Social Community, Home Care and Disability Services Industry Award 2010 SCHADS Level 3 or 4 depending on qualifications and experience. As a not for profit organisation, our employees are able to take advantage of salary packaging to receive up to $15,900 of their salary tax free. Annual leave: 4 weeks per annum Hours: Probationary Period: 21 hours per week 6 months from commencing employment Dated

3 JOB DESCRIPTION JOB PURPOSE: This position is predominately focused on youth work with some family work as required. Youth Work: Provide cultural case work and group work to the most vulnerable people aged 12 to 18 years and their families using a strength based model and Aboriginal Cultural perspective. A holistic approach is to be taken in providing and supporting young people to improve their relationships with their parents while assisting the young people to reach their goals and full potential. Support young people and their families to gain access to appropriate services and to build relationships within the community and reconnect the family with Aboriginal agencies/services to maintain cultural links and identity. Support young people s engagement, cultural and vocational pursuits. Services may be provided within the family home, centre based, within group situations or any other venues within the community. Family Work: Provide child focused outreach Family Support to families, who have dependent children. A holistic approach is to be taken in providing a developmental and supportive role assisting parents to improve their parenting skills and provide a safer environment for their children while assisting their children to reach their full potential. POSITION IN ORGANISATION: The Aboriginal Youth and Family Worker reports directly to the NABU Aboriginal Child Youth and Family, Team Leader. Support and direction may at times be provided by the Child, Youth and Family Team Leader, Families NSW Team Leader and the Service Manager. SCOPE OF ROLE: The Aboriginal Youth and Family Worker will be responsibility for the day to day provision of cultural support to Aboriginal youth and Aboriginal families with a dependent child. DUTIES & KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Provide support to Aboriginal youth and their families to develop skills that will assist them to: Deal with immediate crisis Meet the demands of early adult life Encourage Aboriginal youth to determine and achieve their goals Strengthen relationships with family Provide links to culturally appropriate support services Contribute and maintain cultural links to their communities

4 Use casework strategies to: Engage, empathize and develop professional relationships with Aboriginal youth and their families; Use empathetic listening and problem solving skills to identify the needs and develop suitable cultural support plans; Make referrals to other supports and services and advocate for culturally appropriate service delivery to meet the needs of Aboriginal youth and their families; Build strong relationships with Aboriginal/non-Aboriginal partner agencies to support and strengthen Aboriginal youth cultural connections within the community; Use group work strategies to: Provide non-judgmental support to Aboriginal youth and their families in a variety of group work and information sessions To research, develop, deliver and review education and information groups To provide support to Aboriginal youth that will encourage confidence, cultural identity and self-determination Keep appropriate records and collect statistics for reporting processes Carry out any administrative tasks e.g. case file management, data collection, etc. for the effective maintaining of work with Aboriginal young people and their families Cooperate with the Nabu Team Leader and other team members in assessment, planning and reviewing processes Attend monthly supervision, case reviews and team meetings with the Nabu Team Leader, reporting on activities and recognising areas of personal and professional development Participate in organisation planning and evaluation processes as required Participate as part of the service network, developing and maintaining links with other services, government agencies and schools, in order to enhance collaboration and avoid duplication Comply with statutory provisions and work according to the policies and procedures for service provision endorsed by the Board of Macarthur Family and Youth Services. Other activities as directed by the Team Leader and / or Manager

5 SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS: Support Aboriginal youth and their family in their own home, community centre or in group situations. Work with Aboriginal youth and their families to achieve their goals in areas such as but not limited to: Working toward preventing homelessness and or family breakdown Risk taking reduction strategies Improve the understanding of parents on challenges that teenage development brings Financial management Improved self esteem Coping strategies Identify cultural issues that impact Aboriginal youth and their families Better understanding of education and employment opportunities Alleviation of social isolation and improving community networking Increased knowledge and management of health issues Enhanced communication skills Assist the youth to recognise areas of their life that may require other forms of assistance Support the youth to access specialist services as required Problem solving skills Advocate for youth to achieve goals and improve outcomes

6 SELECTION CRITERIA: 1. Life experience supporting disadvantaged Aboriginal young people and families. 2. Qualifications in youth work / community welfare or similar 3. Experience in case work 4. Demonstrated experience working with Aboriginal youth with substance misuse, homelessness, and mental health. 5. Demonstrated experience engaging Aboriginal youth and families with community, education and vocation. 6. Demonstrated knowledge of Aboriginal and non-aboriginal agencies within the community that provide cultural support services to Aboriginal youth and their families 7. Experience in facilitating group work programs for young people and their parents 8. Ability to maintain professional boundaries, confidentiality and exercise diplomacy and discretion at all times 9. Competence in use of keyboard and standard PC software including excel 10. Excellent oral and written communication skills 11. Current NSW unrestricted C Class Licence and fully registered and insured vehicle 12. NSW Working with Children Check Clearance & Criminal Record Check 13. Proof of Aboriginality
