4 3 rd Annual Psychological Injury Management in the Workplace Congress Pre-Conference Workshop Tuesday 31 May A strategic approach to managing psychosocial risk: How can employers effectively manage psychosocial risk factors within the workplace? Managing psychosocial risks in the workplace is a critical part of creating a safe and healthy work environment. Minimising psychosocial risks within the workplace can help enhance wellbeing, engagement and organisational performance. However, we can only manage the risks that we are aware of. Unlike physical safety risks and hazards, psychosocial risks are far less tangible which make them difficult to identify and manage. This session will explore some key issues to assist organisations with the challenge of managing psychosocial risks, including: Creating a psychologically healthy workplace what s involved? Understanding psychosocial risk factors exploring the hidden risks. Identifying and assessing effective control mechanisms for managing psychosocial risks. Getting the balance right individual vs. organisational accountability. About your workshop leader: Simon Brown-Greaves, Director, FBG Group Simon Brown-Greaves is an experienced senior executive manager and organisational psychologist with more than 20 years involvement in helping businesses and public sector organisations align people and performance. He has extensive experience in managing multi-disciplinary teams and delivering human capital projects and services in the Australian market. Simon is the co-owner and Director of FBG Group, an organisation that provides high quality, customised leadership and organisational consulting services. Simon has worked closely with the executive teams of many of Australia s leading public and private organisations and continues to partner with them to help solve complex cultural issues and develop great leadership effectiveness. Post-Conference Workshop Friday 3 June Strategic solutions to manage workplace bullying and harassment Workplace bullying happens because managers allow it to. Some managers may condone bullying (and in fact display bullying behaviours themselves.) However, in the main, most managers do not condone bullying and are allowing such behaviours to happen because they consider behaviours they are observing to be appropriate, they just don t notice what is going on around them or they are aware and do not have confidence to address the situation, fearing they may be labelled as a bully themselves. The crucial actions required in every workplace to minimise workplace bullying include having every manager at every level be able to 1) understand not only the definition of bullying and harassment but know what constitutes inappropriate behaviour so they are aware of such behaviours in their teams; 2) speak up constructively in that moment; and 3) take complaints of inappropriate behaviour seriously. This full day workshop will: Accurately define bullying and harassment and discuss inappropriate and unlawful workplace behaviours. Explore why this behaviour occurs in the workplace. Provide step-by-step actions that should be taken by recipients and managers in response to bullying or harassment. Discuss whether a bullying or harassment complaint be mediated. Define a procedurally fair investigation process. Share best practice workplace policy and procedure document content. Provide communication strategies that will support managers to speak up in the moment to minimise the display of inappropriate behaviours that can escalate to harassment or bullying type behaviours. About your workshop leader: Catherine Gillespie, Managing Director, Workplace Conflict Resolution Managing Director, Catherine Gillespie holds Master Degrees in Workplace & Employment Law and Conflict Resolution. Catherine is a Nationally Accredited Advanced Mediator with a special interest in Learning and Development (L & D), advanced communication skills and high conflict personalities (HCP s), and is an experienced Senior Investigator. Catherine has Extended Level 2 Accreditation in DISC, a psychometric assessment tool used for career and leadership development. Catherine brings an holistic, mindful and curious approach to understanding conflict in each individual workplace such that she is able to recognise systemic issues underlying conflict and advise on employee relations, human resources, leadership and other factors that impact on conflict, culture and performance.
