ENHANCING STAFF WELLBEING IN VICTORIAN SCHOOLS A timely one day forum and strategic workshop for school leadership teams MELBOURNE CRICKET GROUND - AFL DINING ROOM THURSDAY 4TH MAY Exploring key findings from the 2016 Principal Health and Wellbeing Survey and their implications for all Australian schools with Dr Philip Riley
WHY WE MUST WORK TOGETHER TO SUPPORT INCREASED WELLBEING ACROSS ALL SCHOOL COMMUNITIES Recently launched, Dr Philip Riley s 2016 survey into principal health and wellbeing clearly shows that increasing reports of stress due to mental health issues are taking a heavy toll on principals. Indeed, an overwhelming body of research is highlighting the excessive stress and duress faced by all Australian educators and the flow on effects this is having to their students. Along with a growing number of K-12 education stakeholders, we argue that this is a critical national challenge and requires immediate attention at multiple levels. DR PHILIP RILEY CHIEF INVESTIGATOR, PRINCIPAL HEALTH & WELLBEING SURVEY Today s children are tomorrow s nation builders. As custodians of their futures, teachers are charged with giving them the best opportunities they can. Countless studies show the transformative nature of education. To do this well, we owe it to ourselves to be the best we can be. That means thriving as educators, not merely surviving. The 2016 Australian Principal Health and Wellbeing Survey shows that this depends on collaboration. The technical term is social capital. When social capital increases within an organisation everyone improves together. DR STEPHEN BROWN EXECUTIVE CHAIR, NATIONAL EXCELLENCE IN SCHOOL LEADERSHIP INITIATIVE (NESLI) of its workforce. These schools have positive and productive workplace cultures typified by highly engaged staff who undertake their challenging and engaged teachers enable better student outcomes. It is therefore One of the key characteristics of any high performing school is the quality and rewarding roles in settings that are nurturing. It is clear that supported vitally important that we consistently monitor and proactively adopt strategies that will aid the work of one of the most vital resources for all schools - their workforce.
WORKING TO HELP SCHOOLS BUILD SOCIAL CAPITAL AND INCREASE WELLBEING The National Excellence in School Leadership Initiative (NESLI) is collaborating with a number of senior education stakeholders including Dr Philip Riley on a major national initiative to help support increased mental health and wellbeing for all Australian educators and school support staff. The initiative will focus on two key areas: assisting school leadership teams to lead proactive conversations around social capital, and providing practical and accessible tools and strategies to help individuals manage their own health and wellbeing. The initiative will focus on two important opportunities for schools: THE TEACHERS WELLBEING TOOLKIT Launched across the country in November 2016, the Teachers Wellbeing Toolkit is a group development program designed to help schools create a professional climate which is conducive to the optimal health and wellbeing of all staff, and to help improve social capital across the organisation. The only program of its kind in Australia, the Toolkit assists individuals to proactively manage their own wellbeing and provides strategies for professional communities to better understand and support each other. STAFF WELLBEING EVENT SERIES To accompany the national rollout of the Teachers Wellbeing Toolkit, NESLI will be conducting a series of 1 day events across the country to provide a platform for school leadership teams to further explore wellbeing within the school context. The aims of these important events include: Discuss findings from the 2016 Principal Health and Wellbeing Survey and their implications for schools with Chief Investigator, Dr Philip Riley Explore the link between social capital and wellbeing in schools Offer school leadership teams advice on how they can lead wellbeing conversations within their school Provide practical strategy on implementing wellbeing initiatives.
HOW WILL THIS EVENT BENEFIT MY SCHOOL COMMUNITY? This 1 day event represents an important and timely forum for school leadership teams to explore both the importance of improving social capital within their school and practical ways to start achieving this. Through a series of expert presentations and group workshops, participants will increase their knowledge around what drives social capital and wellbeing in professional communities and create practical strategies to implement this within their school. WHO WILL ATTEND THIS EVENT? This event has been primarily designed for school leadership teams. In addition to this, it is expected that a wide range of school leaders, wellbeing professionals, teachers and school support staff will be in attendance. Presentations and development sessions will be relevant for individuals across all school systems. WHY SHOULD I ATTEND THIS EVENT? Hear from Dr Philip Riley about findings in the 2016 Principal Health and Wellbeing Survey Learn about the links between improved social capital and wellbeing Hear from organisations leading the way in wellbeing Learn how to lead wellbeing conversations in your school Hear from mental health experts and recognised practitioners Learn how the Teachers Wellbeing Toolkit is impacting the health and wellbeing of thousands of Australian educators Understand what resources are available to your school Connect and share ideas with other school leaders
EVENT THEMES Why we must work together to support increased wellbeing across all school communities Leading conversations on wellbeing in Victorian schools Key findings from the 2016 Principal Health and Wellbeing Survey Using contemporary research findings to impact everyday decisions Building social capital in Australian schools - The Teachers Wellbeing Toolkit Understanding legal obligations around mental health and wellbeing Schools wellbeing case studies Developing your schools wellbeing strategy
