3 Extract from the Board of Studies syllabus Part A NB: For the current versions of all BOS documents refer to the BOS website: Tourism (120 indicative hours) Purpose The purpose of this course is to provide students with basic skills and knowledge as preparation for entry-level employment in a Tourism environment. Course Structure This course is comprised of six compulsory units of competency and nine elective units of competency. Section 15 outlines the qualification packaging rules for each qualification contained within the Tourism Industry Curriculum Framework. This should guide selection of units of competency. It is recommended that the combination of units of competency chosen provide broad experiences across the industry. 120 indicative hour courses are accredited for a total of two Preliminary and/or HSC level units. Course Requirements Students must undertake all of the compulsory units of competency plus a minimum of 55 hours of elective units of competency. Students must complete a minimum of 35 hours of mandatory work placement. Table 3. The extent of advanced standing in any course will depend on the specific modules/units of competency completed. Who is this course for? Preliminary & HSC Year students What is this course about? What will students be doing? Students will acquire basic skills and knowledge of: Compulsory units/modules: interpersonal, communication and customer service skills required by all people working in the tourism and hospitality industries cultural awareness required for serving customers and working with colleagues from diverse backgrounds health, safety and security procedures in the context of a tourism business. developing and updating tourism industry knowledge develop and update local knowledge required to effectively respond to general customer information requests in a range of tourism and hospitality businesses communicating in a professional manner on the telephone. Depending on electives chosen: processing and balancing basic financial transactions performing a range of office procedures in the context of a tourism or hospitality business promoting tourism products and services to customers. This module applies to those employees who deal with customers and whose job provides the opportunity to promote products and services and to ascertain changes in customer preferences. handle difficult interpersonal situations - both with customers and colleagues. The module covers the conflict resolution skills required by all people working in the tourism and hospitality industry to address the conflicts which may arise in day-today work activities. receive and process reservations for a tourism or hospitality product or service offered for sale to agents or direct to the consumer. develop and update meetings and events industry knowledge. This knowledge underpins effective performance in all meeting and event management roles. provide on-site information and assistance to customers. This unit applies to operational staff working in attractions but may also be relevant to similar enterprises such as resorts. select, use, and maintain business technology. This technology includes the effective use of computer software to organise information and data. preparation and production of short routine letters, notes, memos and records using word processing software. 6 Extract from the Board of Studies syllabus Part A NB: For the current versions of all BOS documents refer to the BOS website: Tourism (240 indicative hours) Purpose The purpose of this course is to provide students with the opportunity to gain a range of skills and knowledge suitable for employment in a Tourism environment and to provide pathways for university and other tertiary study. Course structure This course is comprised of ten compulsory units of competency and thirteen elective units of competency. Section 15 outlines the qualification packaging rules for each qualification contained within the Tourism Industry Curriculum Framework. This should guide selection of units of competency. It is recommended that the combination of units of competency chosen provide broad experiences across the industry. 240 indicative hour courses are accredited for a total of four Preliminary and/or HSC level units. Course requirements Students must attempt ALL compulsory units of competency and a minimum of 55 hours of elective units of competency. Students must complete a minimum of 70 hours of mandatory work placement. An external written Higher School Certificate examination will be conducted for this course. This examination is optional. 10 Extract from the Board of Studies syllabus Part A NB: For the current versions of all BOS documents refer to the BOS website: Tourism Extension (60 or 120 indicative hours) Purpose The purpose of extension courses is to provide students with the opportunity to gain credit towards additional qualifications in Tourism. They are available to all students undertaking Tourism (240 indicative hours) but are intended especially for students with particular interest and aptitude in this industry area. The maximum Preliminary and/or HSC units available from this framework is 6 units, that is, courses can total up to 360 hours. Students are excluded from studying both the 60- hour and 120-hour extension course. Course structure The extension course can consist of any units of competency drawn from Tourism (240-hour course) that students have not previously attempted. Section 15 outlines the qualification packaging rules for each qualification contained within the Tourism Industry Curriculum Framework. This should guide selection of units of competency. While the qualifications in this framework are broadly focused, it is recommended that the combination of units of competency chosen focus on an occupational outcome. The 60 indicative hour course is accredited for a total of one Preliminary and/or HSC unit. The 120 indicative hour course is accredited for a total of two Preliminary and/or HSC units. Course requirements Students may only elect to study extension courses if they are currently enrolled in, or have completed, the Tourism (240-hour) course. 60 indicative hour courses: Units should be selected to a minimum of 60 indicative hours. Students must complete a minimum of 14 additional hours of mandatory work placement. 120 indicative hour courses: Units should be selected to a minimum of 120 indicative hours. 11 Possible qualifications: Certificate III in Tourism (Operations) THT31002 For students to be eligible for Certificate III in Tourism (Operations) they must demonstrate achievement of THHGCS02B Promote products and services and THHGCS03B Deal with conflict situations and three units of competency from the pool of HSC elective units of competency across a range of these tourism areas: Sales and Office Operations and/or Guiding and/or Attractions and Theme Parks and/or Meetings and Events.
