CAPT Taylor also introduced the luncheon speaker, Jeff Fitzgerald, Ph.D., from Jacobs Engineering. Dr. Fitzgerald currently serves as director of Jacobs technology consulting services. Dr. Fitzgerald s presentation, titled Corporate Information Systems: Performance of Information, began by defining the components of Corporate Information Management. Corporate unified or combined into one; of, for or pertaining to the corporation. Information useful facts obtained through processing of data. Performance management is a process of defining a mission and desired outcomes, setting performance standards, linking budget to performance, reporting results, and holding leaders accountable for results. He then discussed a typical enterprise information management environment. This includes the following Corporate Information Needs: Operations management, Maintenance management, Financial management, Assets/space management, Document management and several other management needs. Next, the conceptual architecture of Corporate Information Systems was reviewed. Dr. Fitzgerald continued with a discussion of the following: Why should you invest in Corporate Information Management? Leverage Knowledge of Indispensible People Reduce Redundant Information Eliminate Fugitive Data Improve Strategic Decision-making Where should you start? Process Analysis (not IT needs analysis) Align Legacy and Operational Systems to meet Corporate needs Adopt an evolutionary implementation approach The Engineering and Facilities Management Data Warehouse was discussed next and incorporated all the Corporate Information Needs mentioned above. Factors of a successful CIM are as follows: Facilitate decisions consistent with the core mission and goals Facilitate decisions integrated with core business processes Use current, reliable information Collects the right data and metadata Use effective deployment of information technology the right tools Has management commitment to sustaining and evolving expanding information technology He then discussed several CIM Case Studies that he has been involved in. Dr. Fitzgerald concluded with the following trends in facilities information management: Corporate decisions are driven by Operational, Economic and Social needs Smart Systems Listening to Asset Health Data mining of these systems will serve corporate needs.
