1 BANKSETA and Masithuthuke Holdings Invitation to Employers ICT Work Readiness Programme Project Rationale South Africa has a massive skills shortage in the ICT sector. The sector together with academia is required to help the country build capacity needed to develop a digital economy. The BANKSETA is responding by establishing a programme that allows ICT graduates to undergo an intense four-month skills and theoretical work readiness course which is followed by six-months experiential training at a host company for a period of six months, completely funded by BANKSETA. The BANKSETA invites companies to participate in its ICT work readiness programme.
2 Background to BANKSETA The Banking Sector Education and Training Authority (BANKSETA) is a statutory body established through the Skills Development Act of 1998 to enable its stakeholders to advance the national and global position of the banking and micro-finance industry. The BANKSETA as guided by its mandate is an agent of transformation and seeks to promote employment equity and broad-based BEE through skills development. Overview BANKSETA in partnership with Masithuthuke Holdings (Pty) Ltd will be implementing a work readiness programme in Information and Communication Technology (ICT). The programme will run in three provinces, Kwa-Zulu Natal, Western Cape and Gauteng. The programme has already been in existence for 3 years and the quality has been tried and tested to yield many benefits. It is designed to respond to ICT skills shortages, prepare graduates for a career in ICT and for sector employers to find alternative pipelines to address this scarce and critical skill. For the Learner Learners are provided with an opportunity to gain ICT skills and workplace experience. Learners will accumulate credits towards the Systems support NQF level 5 National certificate. Regions to be Activated The expressions of interest will guide the final regional allocations: Province Number of Learners Gauteng 100 Western Cape 75 Kwa-Zulu Natal 75 For the Employer Employers are invited to participate in a recruitment process to ensure that learners are selected and meet employer requirements; Participating companies will not incur associated costs for recruitment if an opportunity exists for further employment after completion of the programme. Companies will be able to claim the headcount component of the skills category on the BBBEE scorecard under Enterprise and Supply Development and Socio Economic Development. Any additional spend such as top-up allowances by participating organisations can also be claimed. Once the academic component of the programme is completed, employers will have access to trained individuals that can contribute to the operational workload or be absorbed for other internal work streams or programs. Programme approach and duration The academic component of this ICT work readiness programme is 4 months (16 weeks). The practical component i.e. workplace piece is 6 months (24 weeks) and will be governed by an internship agreement.
