1 Position Title: Head of School Department: Foundation & Preparatory Studies Position Reports to: Executive Director, Programs and Educational Leadership Direct Reports: Managers, School Administrator Position Description Issue Date: June 2018 Location: You are employed to work at Melbourne Polytechnic, a multi-campus institution. Accordingly you agree to work at any location where Melbourne Polytechnic conducts its business at the direction of the Manager responsible for your area. About Melbourne Polytechnic Melbourne Polytechnic offers the perfect combination of higher education and vocational learning, delivered by teachers with real-world experience and expertise. Through a network of six metropolitan campuses and a regional campus in Ararat, Melbourne Polytechnic offers a range of degrees, certificates and diplomas across the whole higher education and vocational training spectrum. About the School of Foundation and Preparation The School of Foundation and Preparation offers vocational training programs from Certificate to Diploma level in a range of areas, including Foundation Studies, Vocational Pathways, Youth Programs, Auslan, OQP, Science and Maths. Key Focus of the School is to develop pathways for learners towards vocational training that supports the student in career or job outcomes. The programs are delivered at the Broadmeadows Training Centre and the Collingwood, Epping, Heidelberg, Fairfield, Prahran and Preston Campuses. Competitive tender processes apply to the majority of the School s fee for service activity. In conducting its business the School maintains strong links to the community and government; as well as being proactive and keeping abreast of government policy directions. Ascertaining community need is critical to program developments and improvements, therefore the School places an emphasis on community development activities with the communities it services, particularly new and emerging communities. Position Purpose 1. Provide academic and educational leadership to the school to facilitate staff commitment and ensure the delivery of positive educational outcomes for students. 2. Lead and manage the strategic development of programs within the school. 3. Develop strong relationships with relevant community, industry and government agencies Key Responsibilities DATE: 28 November 2017; EDITION: 18 Page 1 of 5

Leadership and strategic direction develop and encourage a shared vision for the future directions, goals and priorities of the school/department, which is aligned to the broader mission and goals of the institute; take a leadership role in developing the school/department s strategic and operational planning and manage the school/department so as to achieve its strategic direction and goals; maintain and enhance the academic standing of the implement quality assurance and improvement procedures with the goal of enhancing all aspects of the school/department s activities; foster the development of outstanding academic programmes, research and research training in the monitor and evaluate the school/department s teaching, research and community engagement activities in relation to comparable schools/departments both within and outside the Institute. 2. General teaching and academic management manage, administer and foster excellence in the school/department s teaching, research and professional activities; implement department/school and university policies and strategies; establish and maintain communication with appropriate committees, boards and networks within the faculty and the broader university; represent school/department s interests, views and needs in the broader faculty, university, professional, industry and government context; initiate, maintain and strengthen links between the school/department and other schools/departments and relevant professional and industry bodies; and improve the level of engagement with industry, professions, employers and the community 4. Staff management take overall responsibility for relevant aspects of staff management in the ensure that the school/department complies with the Institute s policies and meets its legal and statutory obligations; play a major role in the recruitment, selection and induction of academic, teaching and general staff; facilitate and promote effective communication and positive morale within the take responsibility for the performance management, mentoring and staff development of academic, administrative and support staff; manage staff grievances in an appropriate manner; Compliance with OH&S, EEO and other legal requirements 5. Key Relationships Internal The position reports directly to the Executive Director Programs and Educational Leadership. Reporting to the Head of School are Managers and School Administrators. External Community Industry Groups Government Job Networks Key Performance Indicators (KPI) To be developed with Executive Director Key Selection Criteria 1. Master s Degree in related discipline 2. PhD desirable 3. A course of teacher training accredited at AQF5 level which includes supervised teaching practice and studies in teaching methodologies or equivalent, is not mandatory, but would be advantageous 4. A Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE40110) or equivalent is not mandatory, but would be advantageous 5. Highly skilled relationship management experience along with ability to foster positive relationships with staff at all levels within the School, broader Institute and with partners, community and government agencies. 6. An understanding and commitment to the transformative impact of education in progressing the economic mobility and social connectedness of communities and individuals particularly including those from new and emerging communities, disadvantaged youth, adults and young people with low levels of literacy and numeracy or incomplete schooling. 7. Ability to provide educational and academic leadership, including a demonstrated knowledge of curriculum and delivery issues relating to the program profile of the School. 8. Demonstrated ability to manage operational requirements of the School and to lead cultural change to a large and diverse group of staff. 9. 5 Managers must also: Ensure all appropriate actions are taken to implement health and safety policies and procedures and legislative requirements Accept operational responsibility for health and safety performance within work areas under their control Where immediate resolution to a risk cannot be achieved and the threat to health and safety is immediate direct that work must cease. Ensure all issues raised and the handling of health and safety matters are treated seriously and sympathetically under the strictest confidence. Effectively communicate Health and Safety Policies, procedures and workplace issues with senior management and employees Support Health and Safety Representatives and First Aid Officers in fulfilling their responsibilities Ensure employees are provided with information, instruction, training and supervision to enable them to perform their work safely. Consult with employees and their Health and Safety Representatives on matters relating to workplace health and safety.
