2 Managing compliance and risk in your organization Over the past decade, businesses and nonprofit organizations have faced increasing demands to comply with a myriad of government regulations in a rapidly changing legal landscape. Today, human resources professionals are responsible for the design, administration, and enforcement of many of the policies that address these regulations while ensuring compliance and managing risk for the organization. This 4-course, 12-week online program offers intensive, practice-based training for human resources professionals and their advisers to identify and evaluate compliance requirements while also being able to work with stakeholders to effectively implement compliance programs within their organizations. PROFESSIONAL LEGAL EDUCATION AT MITCHELL HAMLINE Our mission is to broaden access to legal education with programs designed for professionals seeking training in the law. Mitchell Hamline brings to bear the expertise of more than 50 faculty members on real-world problems facing business professionals today. We were the first law school in the country to adopt best practices in online education to allow students to earn an ABA-accredited, partly on-campus and partly online J.D. through our HYBRID J.D. SM program, and it s those practices that we re adapting for professional legal education.

3 Learn from the experts Featured Lecturers Kate Bischoff 04 Founder, thrive Law & Consulting An enthusiastic management-side attorney and SHRM-SCP/SPHR-certified human resources professional, Kate Bischoff advises organizations in a wide range of industries on employment law and human resources issues, from recruitment and workplace culture to terminations. Her strengths include ensuring human resources policies and practices are compliant with federal and state laws, training employees and managers on equal employment opportunity and other supervisory topics, and handling investigations into employee grievances and complaints. Bischoff is passionate about improving company culture and using technology (social media and data analytics) in the workplace. After several employment law trials, she speaks from experience when advising clients about administrative and court matters. Prior to founding thrive Law & Consulting, Bischoff served as a human resources officer for the United States Department of State at the U.S. Embassy in Lusaka, Zambia, and for the U.S. Consulate General in Jerusalem. Edward Bolton Head of Human Resources (U.S.) for Aqseptence Group Edward Skip Bolton currently works as the Head of Human Resources (U.S.) for Aqseptence Group, a global leader in water and industrial filtration systems. He has more than 25 years of human resources experience in multistate and international manufacturing organizations. He has been a leader of human resources and administration teams at private and public companies and has been owner and president of his own startup organization from 2003 to He has served as a member of the Dakota/Scott County Workforce Investment Board. Bolton has an M.B.A. from Regis University in Denver and a B.S. in business finance from the University of Minnesota s Carlson School of Management. He has been certified a Sr. Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) through the Human Resources Certification Institute and completed his SHRM-SCP in Carolyn Koleske Senior Director, HR Compliance, Ameriprise Financial Carolyn Koleske has several years of human resources experience in four Fortune 500 companies. Her area of expertise is HR compliance with an emphasis on Equal Employment Opportunity and Affirmative Action. Her functional background includes affirmative action program management, government audits, contract compliance, reporting, policy development, training, and communications. In addition, she is knowledgeable about I-9 compliance and regulations associated with preemployment and talent acquisition processes. She also has extensive experience in talent acquisition, as well as HR generalist positions. Koleske earned her M.B.A. from the University of Minnesota s Carlson School of Management. She also has an undergraduate certificate in industrial relations and a B.S. degree in human services and speech communication from the University of Minnesota. She earned the lifetime certification of Sr. Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) through the Human Resources Certification Institute. She is a member of several human resources associations and has held a variety of board positions. Ali McGinty Senior Human Resources Advisor, Landscape Structures Inc. Ali McGinty serves as a senior human resources advisor and has been instrumental in helping employers develop human

4 resources programs that help reduce company risks and increase employee engagement. Her background has focused on all facets of human resources including recruiting, performance management, implementing HR best practices, payroll and benefit administration and plan design, vendor selection and implementation, and training and development. She is a Certified Intrinsic Coach, Idealist Mentor for College Possible Mentoring Program, and a Sr. Professional in Human Resources (SPHR). She obtained her master s degree in human resource management from Concordia University, St. Paul, and her undergraduate degree from St. Cloud State University in business management with a concentration in HR. She has worked in a variety of industries including retail, software, manufacturing, and health care. Catherine Wassberg Vice President and General Counsel, Hamline University Cathy Wassberg is the vice president and general counsel of Hamline University. She joined Hamline in May of Prior to working for Hamline, Wassberg served as managing director of corporate human resources and associate general counsel at Northwest Airlines/Delta managing employment-related litigation and overseeing various human resources divisions. Prior to that, she was a partner and co-chair of the labor and employment department at the law firm of Jenner & Block in Chicago. She earned her J.D. from the University of Chicago Law School and her B.A. from Northern Illinois University. ONLINE LEARNING AT MITCHELL HAMLINE This program is fully online and flexible to serve participants with professional work schedules who live anywhere around the globe. Courses are delivered through our learning management system. You have opportunities to interact and collaborate with other participants and with program faculty in discussions and practical hands-on exercises, but there are no scheduled dates or times when all participants are required to be online together. The program is taught by Mitchell Hamline national subject-matter experts. As a participant in the program, you take courses sequentially over 12 weeks as part of a cohort, after which you earn a certificate. The program runs multiple times a year in the spring and fall.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES After you complete the program, you will be prepared to: Understand the purpose, policies, and role of a human resources professional within an organization Evaluate a workplace event and create an investigative plan that includes risk mapping Design a non-discriminatory business needs assessment with internal company stakeholders Communicate the importance of compliance initiatives to stakeholders within an organization Analyze, assess, and prioritize areas of risk and understand how to effectively manage those areas of risk with stakeholders in the organization Understand employment law and government compliance requirements COURSE OF STUDY The program consists of the following courses, listed in sequence: Human Resources Compliance and Risk Management (3 weeks) Talent Acquisition and Pre-Employment Compliance (3 weeks) Compliance during Employment: Development, Administration, and Enforcement of Policies and Procedures (3 weeks) Compliance Issues in Ending Employment (3 weeks) REGISTRATION Qualified participants must hold a bachelor s degree or equivalent from an accredited college or university. Relevant work experience considered in lieu of bachelor s degree on case-by-case basis. A $250 deposit is due by program start date. TUITION $3980 for 4-course, 12-week program. This program does not qualify for federal financial aid. Government and non-profit rates and limited scholarships available. EVALUATION Courses are graded on a pass/fail basis. After completing the required courses, you will be awarded a Certificate in Human Resources Compliance from Mitchell Hamline School of Law. This program is valid for 24 PDCs for the SHRM-CPSM or SHRM-SCPSM. This activity has been approved for 24 HR (General) recertification credit hours toward California, GPHR, PHRi, SPHRi, PHR, and SPHR recertification through the HR Certification Institute.
