Southeast Infrastructure Michigan Connected Vehicle Assets Southeast Michigan Connected Vehicle Assets FARMINGTON HILLS / NOVI SOUTHFIELD Connected Vehicle Environment MDOT Roadway ITS Coverage Tier 1 Automotive Suppliers Major OEM Facilities ANN ARBOR DETROIT Connected Vehicle Test Beds
Vehicle-to-Infrastructure Deployment Plan V2I deployment decisions are based on a number of factors: Locations of equipped vehicles today Locations with issues which can be addressed by applications Locations most likely for early fleet penetration
Infrastructure CV infrastructure investment is key to creating an environment supportive of V2I testing, and to understand the complexities of managing a large CV infrastructure deployment. 115 RSU s
V2I Applications MDOT is creating partnerships and investing in piloting V2I applications. The most appropriate form(s) of communication were considered for each application. Applications were selected based on assessment of various criteria. DSRC GPS Cellular Wi-Fi Public benefit Agency benefit Industry need/use Application readiness Data availability
V2I Applications Critical Connected Vehicle Environment Element: Equipped vehicles to engage in the system. MDOT is accomplishing this through a combination of partnerships and state vehicle fleets. STATE FLEET VEHICLES
V2I Applications Initial Pilot Applications Red Light Violation Warning Work Zone Warning/ Management Road Weather Management Pavement Condition
V2I Applications Red Light Violation Warning Vehicle approaching intersection too fast, signal is turning red Approaching vehicle receives SPaT message, identifies threat! Driver Vehicle Interface (DVI) alerts driver to brake Smart signal broadcasting Signal Phase and Timing (SPaT)
V2I Applications Work Zone Warning/ Management Portable RSU sends work zone info to vehicle Vehicle is approaching work zone too fast Approaching vehicle receives message from RSU with work zone information!! Driver Driver Vehicle Interface (DVI) (DVI) provides provides warning warning to of slow lane down closure
V2I Applications Road Weather Management Portable Road Side Unit (RSU) sends weather warning to vehicle Road weather station detects icing conditions, reports conditions to weather office Vehicle is approaching hazardous weather conditions area Approaching vehicle receives message of road ice in area from RSU and/or cellular network! Driver Vehicle Interface (DVI) example Driver reduces speed in response to warning
V2I Applications Pavement Condition Monitoring roadside unit sends pothole data to operations center Vehicle drives over pothole in pavement Sensors in vehicle detect Maintenance Vehicle broadcasts MDOT receives data data sharp acceleration at crews that respond via cellular network, from that and vehicle location from the pothole to fix pothole sends message (and lots to of others), strike, stores data nearby roadside dispatches radio as it drives maintenance past crew Heat map of pavement conditions
V2I Applications Truck Parking Information and Management System (TPIMS)
