Carton Requirements Weight and Dimensions: With the exception of single selling units that exceed these measurements, all cartons are required to be within these parameters: Carton Weight: Maximum of 50 lbs (equal to 22.7 kilograms) Minimum of 3lbs Any cartons greater than 50lbs must adhere to the following additional packaging requirements. Cartons must have a yellow TEAM LIFT 4 x 6 label The team lift label should be placed on the four largest sides of the carton including to the left of the GS1-128 label Carton Dimensions: Maximum: 36 Long x 26 Wide x 26 High 92 cm Long x 66 cm Wide x 66 cm High Minimum: 12 Long x 9 Wide x 3 High 30 cm Long x 23 cm Wide x 8 cm High Strength Requirements: Vendors are responsible for utilizing cartons strong enough to withstand the rigors of transportation and supply chain processing. Cartons can be stronger than what is required. It is recommended, but not required, that cartons be labeled with their ECT and/or Bursting Strength certification. Furniture Strength Requirements: Vendors should work with Kohl s Furniture Product Development team to ensure packaging meets current standards. UPS. (2012). Package with Care A Guide to Packing Your Shipments.[Brochure]. UPS. 3
General Carton Requirements: Pack shipments to the same level of detail as the purchase order is written. If Vendors have a packaging alternative to corrugate, contact floorready@kohls.com for approval. Cartons can be new or repurposed. Any additional bar codes or print on repurposed cartons must be covered or disabled so they do not interfere with the scanning of the GS1-128 label or other DC processing activities. All cartons must adequately protect product during transit and DC processing Seal cartons with reinforced security tape that is moisture and temperature resistant Do not seal cartons with bands, straps, staples, twine, glue or any closure material other than tape. However, it is approved to use plastic strapping to seal gaylords and CDUs. Use the correct size carton for the merchandise; do not over- or under-pack cartons Cartons must be wide enough to allow items to fit squarely in the carton If packing small items, consider master packing in order to use larger cartons (Page 13-14) When applicable, cartons should be marked in BOLD lettering, Fragile, Do Not Freeze, Melt Risk, etc. (i.e. glassware, cosmetics, candles) 4
Pack Type Definitions Bulk (B) Pack Type: Pack one UPC/SKU (one style, color, size combination) per carton Mixed SKU cartons are prohibited on bulk shipments Direct import orders must follow inner pack/outer pack instructions transmitted on the PO EDI Prepack (M) Pack Type: Prepack definition = pre-determined ratio of multiple UPCs/SKUs set by the buyer and transmitted on the EDI purchase order The EDI purchase order directs the number of prepacks to pack in each carton The EDI purchase order carries prepack level data and line item data Packing information for private brands via Li & Fung is on the objective sheet or PLX information Pack-by-Store ( PBS ) Pack Type: Units are assigned to a particular store Multiple UPCs/SKUs may be packed in the same carton Total units per carton may vary per store needs PBS does not apply to Kohl s Direct Imports/Private Brands 5
Hardline Drop Test Requirements Kohl s expects vendors of breakable/hardline product to perform drop testing using the following guideline as a minimum standard. Test results should be kept on file by the vendor and Kohl s reserves the right to request the documentation in the event a quality issue is detected. Selection of shipping cartons for drop test: Shipping cartons are randomly selected from bulk production for drop test. Total shipping cartons Shipping cartons for drop test 1-7 Not required For All Hardline Items (except glassware, ceramicware): Shipping carton drop height is determined according to shipping carton weight: Carton weight Drop height 0 < 21 lbs 30" (76 cm) 21 < 41 lbs 24" (60 cm) 41 < 61 lbs 18" (45 cm) 61 < 100 lbs 12" (30 cm) For Ceramicware: Carton weight Drop height - 18" (45 cm) For glassware: Carton weight Drop height - 12" (30 cm) Evaluation: Dropped cartons must be opened for inspection, to identify damaged or defective product related to the drop test. Defect Classification List are located on Private brands > Quality Assurance > Defect Classification Lists The percentage of defective units cannot exceed 2.5%, based upon Kohl's OQL (outgoing quality level). If it does exceed, the drop test failed and must be reviewed & corrected prior to shipping. 6
Hangers Use: Use 584 sweater hangers in place of 484 top hangers when needed to prevent hanger marks or garment shoulder slippage Only Kohls approved paper loops are an acceptable means to bind / secure hangers together where necessary some examples of unacceptable means to bind / secure hangers together are rubber bands, tape and plastic twist ties, or any means that ties the hangers together please contact vendor.services@kohls.com Apply Kohl s designated program hangers Hangers may be anchored to the internal sides of the carton when needed to prevent garments from shifting in transit When using carton liners, hanger hooks do not need to be exposed When using poly bags, hanger hooks need to be exposed Sets: Two-Piece Sets: Insert bottoms hanger through the off-set loop on the tops hanger Apply crown sizer to the top hanger only Three-Piece Sets: Follow the above two-piece directive Attach third garment hanger to the two-piece set using connector 9916N Apply crown sizer to the top hanger only 7
Hanger Carton Packing: Lay garments head to toe in the carton, alternating the direction of the garments as needed There should be no more than one horizontal fold per garment when packed Fold as close to the bottom of the garment as possible Vertical folding is acceptable if necessary to accommodate the garment width Fold as close to side seams as possible Do not place garment into the carton in a wrinkled manner, as the wrinkles will become permanent in transit Follow Kohl s carton dimensions guidelines as stated on p. 2 of this section The carton should be only 1 to 1 ½ wider than the size of the hanger Hangers must fit squarely in the cartons (not at an angle) Adjust your carton length and height according to the size of the pack Cardboard Bridge: A cardboard bridge may be used in the carton to remove some of the pressure on garments in the bottom half of the carton. Use a bridge in carton packing for special fabrications that may become very wrinkled or crushed from the excess weight and pressure of other garments Recommended for cartons with 12 or more pieces of special fabrications. (silks, moleskin, velvets, etc) The cardboard used can be of a single corrugated quality. Ends of the bridge are left open so there should be no need for a larger length in the outer carton, and no more than ¼ to ½ inch wider in width. Please note that hangers should still be put in the garments. 8
Diagrams: Perforations must follow these examples Figure 1: Garment Bag for Bottoms Figure 2: Garment Bag for Tops, Coats or Dresses 9
Polybag Requirements Definition: A poly bag is a poly material that is used as a bag to protect individual hanging and folded garments. The use of poly bags is not required; they should only be used if needed to ensure product arrives to Kohl s in saleable condition. A child safety warning is required on all poly bags 9 x 12 or larger o Recommended Verbiage: "Warning: To avoid danger of suffocation, keep this plastic bag away from babies and children. Do not use this bag in cribs, beds, carriages or playpens. The plastic bag could block nose and mouth and prevent breathing. This bag is not a toy." Material: Clear polyethylene material (PE) with no BHT Thickness: to inches or 0.019mm to 0.032mm Recyclable material All poly bags must be perforated for ease of removal Vendors may use poly bag supplier of their choice Use: Individual poly bagging must be approved by FloorReady@kohls.com One large poly bag may be used to protect all hanging and folded garments packed within one carton A poly bag is the preferred method for packing inner pack quantities transmitted on Import Bulk orders and Inner Prepack orders Poly bags must be 6 to 12 inches longer than the garment(s) The large poly bag may be used in place of a carton liner A single piece of tape or heat seal may be used; however, sealing is not required 10
Polybag Exceptions Sweaters: may use single poly bag for heavily embellished, high loft chenille or cashmere sweaters Embellished Knit Tops: may use single poly bag and tissue Delicate Fabrics: may use single poly bag, tissue and cardboard bridge to minimize wrinkles in sateen, micro fiber, chenille, velvet, leather or suede garments 11
Carton Liner Requirements The following requirements must be followed when preparing shipments to Kohl s that are standard Bulk purchase orders with inner quantities of one (1) These requirements are to be followed when the vendor is given a standard Import, Landed, or Domestic Bulk purchase order Definition A carton liner is a poly material that lines the entire inside of the carton before garments are packed inside. Carton liners are used to provide additional protection for the garments while eliminating the need for individual poly bags Material: Clear polyethylene material (PE) with no BHT Thickness: to inches or 0.019mm to 0.032mm Recyclable material Vendors may use carton liner supplier of their choice A child safety warning is required on all poly bags 9 x 12 or larger o Recommended Verbiage: "Warning: To avoid danger of suffocation, keep this plastic bag away from babies and children. Do not use this bag in cribs, beds, carriages or playpens. The plastic bag could block nose and mouth and prevent breathing. This bag is not a toy." Use Use one (1) carton liner for the entire quantity of each carton Pack hanging garments head to toe in flat carton 12
Carton Liner Illustrations: Carton liner inside carton prior to packing order Carton liner with garment inside with hanger on the left side Carton liner with garment inside with hanger on right side Carton liner sealed after packing garments prior to closing carton 13
Protective Packaging Guidelines Acceptable: Paper loops to secure hangers Bubble wrap Corrugated cardboard wrap Cardboard dividers Dunnage or paper stuffing for books Plastic strapping on gaylords and CDU s Unacceptable: Using tape or rubber bands on hangers Tying hangers together Tissue (unless directed by buyer or product manager) Pins, plastic clips, or tie backs (unless directed by buyer or product manager Packing peanuts Shredded paper Strapping an outer cartons Inserting anything between a garment and a pinch clip hanger (i.e. cardboard, fabric, etc) 14
Specialty Packaging Guidelines Shoe Packing: Pack shoes with the label end facing the top of the carton All boxes must face the same direction If packing an empty shoebox to fill space, write EMPTY on the shoebox in large print Apply suppressed retail price tickets to the same end of the shoebox as the preprinted barcode 15
GS1-128 Carton Labeling 16 All cartons being shipped to Kohl s stores or distribution centers must have compliant Kohl s GS1-128 carton labels For import orders, please refer to Appendix SP-11 for Private Brand and Direct Import GS1-128 Requirements located on Logistics & Routing > Appendices > Shipment Packing GS1 US Definition (Formerly the Uniform Code Council) GS1 is the global standards authority for item (UPC and EAN) and logistical numbering. In addition to managing the numbering assignments, GS1 provides the retail industry guidelines for supply chain identification. Every country has a regional organization and GS1 US is the non-profit organization in the United States. Kohl s requires that all vendors review and follow carton label formats and barcode data requirements in accordance with the guidelines posted on the GS1 US website (listed below). Kohl s does not receive at Master Carton level or Pallet level. GS1-128 barcode must be at the individual carton level. Only apply one GS1-128 label per carton. The largest side will be facing down on our conveyors. Therefore, labels must be placed on the second largest side. In the lower right quadrant These placement guidelines are required even if the second largest side of the carton has the box seam as long as the GS1-128 barcode does not cross the seam of the box (see examples below). If there is stenciling on the cartons, leave the lower right hand quadrant of the second largest side of the carton vacant for the GS1-128 label GS1-128 Labels must be Placed in an upright position Barcode must be read vertically Do not place sideways or diagonally The SSCC-18 bar code on the carton label must be 3.0 inches from either vertical edge of the carton no less than 1.25 inches up from the bottom horizontal edge Do not place SSCC-18 bar code over a flap seam or around the corners of a carton The human readable SSCC number that is printed above the bar code must be printed in a bold font, no smaller than 12 pt Do not place tape over any bar code For merchandise selling in the same carton as shipping Do not place labels over product ID Numbers UPC Bar Codes & retail price other consumer information on merchandise
