ACRP Problem Statement - Research is needed to: 1. Develop a tool to help airports evaluate and select sustainability best practices 2. Develop a rating system to gauge airport sustainability performance, and 3. Assess the viability of industry-wide adoption of a rating system and voluntary certification program Project Initiated in 2011; Published 2014
Decision Tool Includes component to build a Decision Tool to help users identify, evaluate, prioritize, and select sustainability practices most appropriate for a particular airport Overlapped with ACRP Panels from both projects came to consensus to produce one tool for the industry Now incorporated into SAGA website to streamline the sustainability planning process
Prototype Airport Sustainability Rating System/ Viability Assessment Prototype Airport Sustainability Rating System that gauges airport-wide sustainability performance Documentation and evaluation of existing proven sustainability rating systems from various industries Structural Components of Airport-wide Rating System prototype - proof of concept Annotated Users guide of Rating System Definitions of Sustainability Activities Recommended performance metrics to assess progress
Research Approach Conducted two-phase stakeholder outreach: Phase 1: Identify challenges with airport sustainability management and assess interest in (and desired features of) an airport sustainability rating system Phase 2: Seek input on the Prototype Rating System and feasibility/viability of a certification and verification program In-Depth Telephone Interviews On-line Focus Group Paper Survey at ACI-NA Conference Focus Group at AGG Conference On-line Survey Decision Tool & Rating System Briefings at Industry Conference s
Research Approach Reviewed existing sustainability resources, guidelines, and rating and certification systems to compile information that can be incorporated into the Airport Sustainability Rating System Identified the key components of an Airport Rating System Developed a prototype Airport Sustainability Rating System based on the structural components Evaluated the viability of the prototype
Research Findings Stakeholders want a sustainability rating system that: Consider airports of different sizes, geographies, and functions Includes all airport assets Under direct control of airport Under indirect control of airport Influenced by airport Incorporates elements of existing rating systems Includes a points-based scoring framework Adheres to the EONS sustainability framework Recognizes airport-wide sustainability performance Emphasizes flexibility to accommodate all airport types
Prototype Rating System Structural Components
Using Prototype Rating System How can the Prototype Airport Sustainability Rating System be used in its current form? 1. Provides a comprehensive review of existing airport and nonairport sustainability rating and certification programs to assess their applicability and usefulness for rating airport sustainability 2. Provides a useful framework for structuring an airport-wide sustainability program 3. Provides a method and metrics for evaluating airport-wide sustainability performance
Prototype Rating System Application 1. Provides a comprehensive review of existing airport and non-airport sustainability rating and certification programs to assess their applicability and usefulness for rating airport sustainability 7 Airport Industry Rating and Certification Programs 10 Non-airport Industry Rating and Certification Programs

Prototype Rating System Application 2. Provides a useful framework for structuring an airport sustainability program Explicitly defines EONS elements Identifies Sustainability Categories Details Sustainability Activities and groups into Infrastructure Operations Management
Identifying Sustainability Categories Economic Viability Human Wellbeing Operational Efficiency Natural Resource Conservation Social Responsibility Energy and Climate Transportation Economic Performance Design and Materials Engagement and Leadership Water and Waste Natural Resources Consistent with SAGA categories
Identifying Sustainability Activities
Recommending Sustainability Waste Management Activities Infrastructure Operations Management Identify collection and staging areas for useable materials available for reuse, sale, or donation. Increase the availability of collection bins for the sorting of waste in all areas with human presence, including terminals, office space, airfield maintenance hangers, cargo hangars, etc. Install proper signage to inform customers about waste sorting. Co-locate recycling receptacles with trash receptacles. Conduct a waste audit to determine percentage of potentially recyclable waste that is going to landfill/incinerator. Maintain a waste reduction, reuse, and recycling program for durable goods, including office equipment, appliances, audiovisual equipment, and furniture. Incorporate waste diversion in all levels of employee training. Establish a Waste Diversion Plan to outline airport-wide goals and strategies. Explore, implement, and expand recycling and composting pickup options with local waste management vendors. Encourage vendors to procure supplies suitable for composting.

Prototype Rating System Application 3. Provides a method and metrics for evaluating airport sustainability performance Thorough definition of each activity Performance Metrics for evaluating sustainability performance Consistent with the Sustainable Aviation Guidance Alliance (SAGA)
Activity Definition
Activity Definition
Activity Definition
Metrics for Evaluating Sustainability Within each category, airports can evaluate sustainability using broad, measurable indicators that capture whether or not an activity is sustainable Performance metric Performance indicator that allows an airport to measure and track performance over time Example performance metrics include: % reduction in building energy use intensity relative to a baseline % of total fleet fuel energy derived from alternative sources % of total solid waste that is diverted from a landfill Annual employee retention rate
Sample Performance Metrics
Metrics for Evaluating Sustainability In the absence of a single performance metric, airports can monitor progress based on the number and type of actions taken to improve sustainability Performance actions Efforts taken to improve sustainability that, when evaluated alongside other performance actions, serve as good indicators of sustainability performance Example: Climate change adaptation Performance is evaluated based on airports efforts to conduct vulnerability assessments; update siting, planning, and design procedures; harden and protect critical infrastructure; and implement other adaptive management activities

Airport Sustainability Plans
Research Findings An Airport Sustainability Rating System complete with certification and verification program could be viable, but The costs of administration and governance would vary based on the robustness of the certification and verification program Implementation options for certification and verification range from releasing the rating system as a Best Practices & Metrics Manual to coupling with a robust independent certification and verification program involving external parties and procedures
Research Findings Airport adoption of a sustainability rating system depends on: Stakeholder interest Functional benefits gained by participation Existing alternative methods to rate sustainability performance Administration and Governance
Conclusions An Airport-wide Sustainability Rating System is viable and would provide airports with: A framework for categorizing and evaluating sustainability activities; Resources for setting goals, objectives, and targets; A common language to describe, evaluate and promote airport sustainability performance Focus on airport-wide sustainability rating Rating System implementation options range from a best practices and metrics manual to a robust rating system with independent certification and verification Upfront and operational costs increase as the implementation approach becomes more robust Rating System needs a sponsor to complete, manage and promote the rating system
