7 DOURO S INLAND WATERWAY 2020 Objetive: to endow Douro s Inland Waterway with navigability and safety conditions that comply with European standards while contributing to the growth of the region. FREIGHT TRANSPORTATION TOURISM IMPLEMENTATION: 6 years BUDGET: 76 million EUR

8 The DIW 2020 global project foresees: The hydrographic mapping of the DIW and the development of navigation charts The correction of the channels in two critical sections In order to widen and deepen the river in two specific sections to allow for safe crossing either to tourism or cargo vessels, and ensure the draft of the barges demanded by the limits of the length of the locks. The Implementation of RIS Management and information on traffic and weather conditions, among others, in the 208 km extension of the channel. The Modernization of the Locks The implementation of the Emergency Plan Professional (re)qualification

9 DIW 2020 is divided in 3 phases: Douro s Inland Waterway 2020 Phase I concluded in January 2017 Preparatory studies for: - modernisation works in the Douro - for the development of RIS - economic, social and environmental studies Duration: March 2015 January 2017 Budget: 4,7 million EUR Funding: 50% - CEF-T 2014

10 PHASE I Main Results The topographic and hydrographic survey in two critical sections: Saião-Pocinho and Cotas-Valeira The engineering project for the geometrical correction of the channel in two critical sections and the preparation of the Environmental Impact Assessment studies The study and projects for the modernisation of the locks The study that defines the requirements for the implementation of RIS in the Douro and its integration with the port logistics and information systems (JUP and JUL) of Leixões The economic studies on the development of new markets in the DIW Development of the Safety and Emergency Plan of the DIW and of training activities

11 Douro s Inland Waterway 2020 Safer and Sustainable Accessibility To improve the safety conditions in the Douro river estuary Opportunity to test pilot actions to roll out to the whole extension of the channel. 12 Douro s Inland Waterway 2020 Safer and Sustainable Accessibility Main ongoing activities: - development of the communications portal for the Douro; - to equip the operators with electronic navigation charts; - buoyage pilot action in the estuary; - pilot actions for the testing of water and electricity supply solutions from land; - purchase of a MULTICAT tug boat and of a navigation simulator; - training activities; - emergency exercise in the DIW; - project dissemination activities.

13 Douro s Inland Waterway 2020 RIS To implement RIS Duration: March 2016 September 2018 Budget: 2.7 million EUR Funding: 85% - CEF-T 2015 call Cohesion Envelope RIS Hardware and software for a full-fledged communication system in the 208 km extension of the inland waterway: - New systems of support to navigation; - Network of hydrological sensors; CCTV; - New information system and portal for external users. Development fully in line with the minimal requirement of the Directive 2005/44/CE.

14 Douro s Inland Waterway 2020 RIS Main ongoing activities: The RIS system is currently being developed, in the following dimensions (hardware and software): - Information about the waterway; - Traffic information; - Crisis management; - Logistics and multimodal information; - Information to be shared with authorities.
