2 What are 2d barcodes? The vision behind mobile tagging is quite simply the idea of an absolute convergence between information media. Mobile tagging connects static information carriers with the mobile Internet and encourages interaction with the user. In essence, a 2D barcode is a graphical image that stores information both horizontally and vertically. QR Codes such as above are the industry standard in 2d barcodes and are OPEN SOURCE codes which are the only true option when needing to reach mass market as almost all readers can scan QR codes. Proprietary code creation is very limiting in marketing as only the reader associated with the code creation can read it. For example, you create a MSFT tag or Scanlife easycode and put it on a billboard. Your potential customers go to scan it and they have a blackberry that comes standard with a reader, or any smart phone with a reader other than the above, they won t be able to read the code. Consumers will only try once or twice before giving up and moving on. Yet if the code was an open source code such as IMS produces, they could have almost any reader on their phone and be able to scan the code, thus creating a positive user experience that they will repeat over and over again.
