9 > ALUMINIUM OXIDE (AI O ) 2 3 Alumina is the most common and cost effective material in industrial (fine) ceramics. It is extremely durable and superior in abrasion resistance. It has the properties of heat resistance and chemical resistance. The combination of these properties and a comparatively low price makes it available for a wide range of applications. It has the highest mechanical strength and toughness at normal temperatures in the industrial ceramics. 11 > SILICON NITRIDE (Si N ) 3 4 Silicon nitride is the fine - grain ceramic (sintered) at high temperatures in the non-oxidation ambience. It has the strongest covalent-bond property next to silicon carbide and can be polished to a very smooth reflective surface. It has the properties of excellent heat resistance, high temperature strength and high temperature hardness. The material is dark gray to black in colour and it is a high-temperature structural material.
