What is BIRT? The Bias Incident Respnse Team (BIRT) is a cmmittee made up f faculty, staff, and student vlunteers wh are trained t serve as the first line f fficial respnse in bias-related incidents. Bias-related incidents: Include Criminal and Nn-Criminal cnduct Are mtivated by hatred, prejudice r bigtry May be directed at: individuals, a grup f individuals, a structured grup, prperty, nn-members wh assciate with r advcate n behalf f members f a structured grup Yu can reprt ANY bias-related incident t BIRT (even if it isn t a crime r a direct vilatin f the student cde f cnduct).

BIRT Prtcl When reprts are made t BIRT, the reprter can chse whether r nt t remain annymus. Reprts can be made (by the target f an incident r by a witness r ally) in any f the fllwing frmats: Online Annymus r nt Phne In-Persn T a BIRT member T a BIRT member If yur submissin is nt annymus, a BIRT member will cntact yu within tw business days E-mail T a BIRT member
Wh can see my reprt? That s up t yu! If yu remain annymus: If yu d nt remain annymus: Yur reprt will autmatically be sent t the BIRT cchairs, wh will be the primary respnders. If the need arises, it may als be sent t the Chief Diversity Officer (CDO), Dr. Bernadette Tiap. Yur reprt will be sent t the BIRT c-chairs, wh will be the primary respnders. If the need arises, it may als be sent t the CDO. If yu select any ther team members while submitting yur reprt, they will als be given access t the reprt. Nbdy will knw wh yu are, nt even thse with access t the reprt. BIRT will still lk int the reprt even if yu remain annymus. Hwever, it is imprtant t nte that yu will nt be cntacted abut fllw-up. Yu will be given the ptin f selecting which team members can view yur reprt (these are als the members wh will be able t meet with yu abut yur reprt). Only the team members yu select will be given identifying infrmatin r specific details regarding the reprt. Members yu dn t select will nt knw wh yu are.
What happens when I reprt? Once yu make a reprt, the infrmatin is reprted t the BIRT c-chairs. The c-chairs then cntact the team members yu have selected t review the reprt.
If the team needs additinal infrmatin frm yu r ther invlved parties, they will reach ut t yu. If yu wish t meet with the team members fr any reasn during this prcess, yu will be able t d s. The team then cntacts yu t set up a meeting. The gals f this meeting are t understand yur specific needs, share all pssible slutins and resurces with yu, and get yur input/feedback.
IF THERE IS A KNOWN PERPETRATOR: Depending n the nature f the reprt, yu will be infrmed f ther pssible reprting ptins that the team culd assist yu with, including: reprting t the Office f Student Cnduct & Cmmunity Standards, University Plice, r the Office f Title IX/Affirmative Actin. IF THERE IS NOT A KNOWN PERPETRATOR: Yu will be cntacted in case there is any additinal infrmatin yu wish t share with the team.
The agreed upn slutins are implemented. This may include (but is nt limited t): Cllabratin with ther departments r campus ffices Educatinal prgrams (the team may even suggest facilitating such prgrams) Trainings fr individuals r departments Direct mediatins The team then cmmunicates with yu t ensure that the established gals have been met and that yur cncerns have all been addressed t the fullest extent pssible. Yu will be asked t cmplete an evaluatin at this time.
Once the reprt is clsed, sme infrmatin will be cmmunicated t the BIRT c-chairs s the database can be updated. At the next regular BIRT meeting, all members will be briefed n the reprt, but withut specific details (such as names, lcatins, r ther identifying infrmatin).

Privacy Statement This reprting prcess is designed t maintain the privacy f thse wh chse t use it: t that end, the infrmatin yu prvide will be kept private t the fullest extent pssible, unless yu authrize its release fr review and/r fllw-up. If yu wish t remain annymus, please be advised that yu will nt be cntacted by the SUNY Ptsdam BIRT regarding any fllw-up related t yur reprt.
