The Position The position of Director of Human Resources at Xavier College is a unique opportunity to shape the future direction of the school s human resource requirements by building the professional capabilities of staff across each campus of the College. This position is a critical appointment to the Executive leadership team and the Senior Campus leadership team and has reporting lines to the Principal and the Director of Senior Campus. The Director of Human Resources will assume responsibility for all HR matters including establishing an overarching HR strategy with embedded HR systems, procedures and policies. Responsibility will focus on: recruitment, induction, performance management, organisational development, training and professional development, legal compliance, employee relations, health and safety and HR administration. The Director of Human Resources will oversee the management of staff services and HR matters across some 440 staff members including 260 teaching staff, over the three campus locations: Senior School, Burke Hall and Kostka Hall. The position will have administrative support. The working conditions and culture of Xavier College are second to none and this position is offered as a full time position. Key Challenges for the Director of Human Resources in the first 12 months are considered to include: Establishing the position and gaining credibility through the broader school community The development and implementation of contemporary HR systems and policies covering both the teaching and non-teaching staff immediate focus on induction and performance review processes with longer term development of a workforce capability program Developing an employee relations program with supporting policies and compliant processes. About Xavier College School Xavier College, first opened in 1878, was named after St Francis Xavier, one of the closest friends of St Ignatius of Loyola. Together with five other companions, they founded the Jesuit order in 1540. Jesuit principles of education emphasise the centrality of the Catholic faith, pursuit of excellence, development of the whole person, care of each individual (Cura Personalis) and service to others. These principles define all aspects of life at Xavier which is part of a world-wide network of Jesuit schools that collectively educate nearly two million students. Xavier College understands the crucial importance of laying the foundation for the future for their students, from skills, passion and work ethic to self-image and place in the community. Xavier educate students from Early Years (3 year olds) to VCE. There are three campus locations: Kostka Hall, Brighton (3 year olds to Year 8, co-education to Year 4); Burke Hall, Kew (3 year olds to Year 8, co-education to Year 4) and the Senior Campus, Kew (Year 9 to 12, all boys including boarding). Present enrolment is a total of some 2, 075 students including 67 boarders. The School has a total of approximately 440 employees (excluding casual staff) of whom 260 are teaching staff. Key Responsibilities The below statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed. They are not intended to be construed as a list of all responsibilities, duties and skills required of the position. The incumbent may be required to undertake any other duties as may be reasonably required by the Principal and Director of Senior Campus. Human Resource Strategy and Policy Designs HR strategies (e.g recruitment, remuneration, employee relations, staff engagement) and a formal HR plan aligned with the Vision, Mission and Guiding Principles of the College. Participates in the College Executive and the Senior Campus Leadership team contributing to organisational decisions and planning for the development of human resources and staff services to complement the Strategic Plan of XC. Ensures XC is compliant with all Government regulatory requirements with respect to the employment and management of staff. Establish contemporary HR reporting metrics and reporting against appropriate benchmarks Collegial Support, Pastoral Care and Legal Compliance Assists with the pastoral care of staff, promotes an inclusive work environment, participates in relevant staff committees and takes an active role in the internal communication process with all staff. Active participant in all matters affecting employment law and OHS of staff. This includes leading the co-ordination of case management items, as they arise. Supervision of EEO issues. Monitors teacher registration requirements. Supervision of all work visas and GAP student compliance issues. Recruitment, Selection and Induction Supervision of and involvement in the recruitment and selection of new staff, including drafting of advertisements, liaison with recruitment agencies, organisation of interviews of prospective candidates (consulting with relevant line managers and supervisors). Proactively sources, attracts and retains high quality staff to the School. Performance Management Review Implementation and review of performance management systems and procedures for nonteaching and teaching staff (in conjunction with Directors of Campus and Heads of Teaching and Learning) and assistance with systems and procedures for all staff; training of reviewers, monitoring reports and action plans, counselling of staff and managers. Organisational Development including Training and Professional Development Actively involved in organisational development initiatives and activities, including but not limited to team building, change management, succession planning and organisational design. In consultation with College Leadership Teams, conducts training needs analysis, staff competencies assessment, succession, career planning and mentoring programs. 5 of 9
Employee Relations, Negotiation, Mediation Review, develop and implement appropriate employee relations strategies, policies, processes and protocols. Active participation in all salary and employment contract negotiations, benefits, selection and programme costing, staff disciplinary and grievance hearings or mediation. Act as the primary relationship manager for industrial and union matters. HR Administration Monitors staff records of benefits, leave, sickness, workers compensation, personnel files and entitlements. Oversees remuneration records for all staff and advises payroll of changes. Administration of Human Resources budget, including professional development Health and Safety Manage compliance to Workers Compensation legislation and return to work programs. Works within the School s Health and Safety Policy. Member of Health and Safety Committee The nature of this position is such that the incumbent will be required to be available outside the normal office/college hours, to attend meetings and presentations whenever necessary and to represent the College in a variety of forums in regard to Human Resource Management and Industrial Relations issues as required. 6 of 9
Experience, Skills and Qualifications The position of Director of Human Resources ideally calls for a highly experienced and contemporary Human Resources generalist with outstanding management and leadership experience. Demonstrated experience across all aspects of Human Resources principles is required. The ideal candidate will have gained experience in developing and establishing HR strategies which have been successfully implemented. In addition, the incumbent will enjoy the hands on nature of this role. This role requires the ability to create and implement an HR vision and strategy which is accepted and endorsed throughout the school. Outstanding verbal and written communications skills are essential. The position requires a collaborative and values based individual who possesses the ability to generate ideas and execute well thought out and disciplined plans. This important role will act as a confidant to the Principal and will require a sensitive and confidential approach. Flexibility and the ability to work under pressure are also key aspects of the role. Tertiary qualifications ideally in Human Resources are required. In addition, a candidate with HR experience gained in an Australian educational institution would be highly desirable or equally experience gained in a not-for-profit environment. The Director of Human Resources is appointed on an initial contract of three years with an annual review with the Principal and a formal performance review in the final year of contract. 7 of 9
Key Selection Criteria 1. Significant general Human Resource experience gained in a senior management role. 2. Excellent influencing and negotiation skills, with the ability to engage others in order to gain their commitment to ideas, projects or actions and considers the interests of all concerned. 3. Proven capacity to create and implement HR strategy whilst continually striving for improvement by challenging the status quo and generating new ideas to operate more efficiently. 4. Ability to gain trust and respect of the School community and ensure high levels of confidentiality is maintained. 5. Proven stakeholder management skills, including the use of interpersonal styles and communication methods to influence and build mutually beneficial relationships with teaching and support staff 6. High level of conceptual and analytical skills, including the use of logical assumptions and factual data to reason through problems. 7. Demonstrated knowledge of relevant industrial law, regulations and procedures. 8. Competency in IT, especially in Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint. 9. Knowledge of and/or experience in the Australian education sector is desirable. 10. Relevant tertiary qualification and/or postgraduate qualifications with a human resources focus. 8 of 9
