1 APPLICATION FOR THE YOUTH JUSTICE LEAGUE I. YOUTH JUSTICE LEAGUE BACKGROUND INFORMATION What is Community Food Advocates? The Youth Justice League is located at Community Food Advocates (CFA), a policy impact organization working to strengthen food and income policies and programs so they are more accessible to low-income New Yorkers. Currently, we are leading the campaign to remove the poverty stigma around school lunch by making it free for all New York City s public school students, regardless of family income, amongst other issues that we work on. One of the key principles that drives our work is to make sure that communities who are most directly affected by these policies and programs, including youth, play a leading role in the advocacy process. What is the Youth Justice League? The Youth Justice League (YJL) is a youth-led group based at Community Food Advocates. The YJL is ideal for high school level youth who want to learn about social justice, policy advocacy, and how to carry out policy campaigns as a way to create systemic change in New York City. Specifically, the YJL will serve as active youth leaders in the campaign for universal free school lunch in New York City s public schools, but membership in this group will also include the opportunity to learn about other social justice issues and develop youth leadership. YJL members will participate in workshops, trainings, guided lessons, and collaborations with other youth within YJL and other youth-based groups in the City. In addition to learning about policy advocacy, through hands-on experience, members will also have the opportunity to develop specific skills such as leadership, public speaking, research and writing, policy analysis, presenting testimony, meeting with policymakers, social media strategizing, and working in coalition. 1 of 6

2 Members meet regularly on a weekly basis for 1½ hours from now until June 2017, with the possibility of continuing into the following academic year from September June Additional time commitment may be possible based on campaign actions and projects.
