1 SOL OBJECTIVES: STANDARD USI.8 The student will demonstrate knowledge of westward expansion and reform in America from c) describing the impact of inventions, including the cotton gin, the reaper, the steamboat, and the steam locomotive, on life in America. LESSON OBJECTIVE: The students will create their own invention and advertisement and relate it to the technologies of the 1800 s. TASK ANALYSIS: Do the students know that new states were added to the US? YES Do the students know that Jefferson purchased the LA Territory? YES Do the students know which territories were added between 1801 and 1861? YES Do the students know what influenced settlers to move west? YES Do the students know the new inventions of the 1800 s? YES KEY TERMS: LEARNING RESOURCES: Smartboard Warm-Up What Invention HW Invention & Advertisement Rubric Invention & Advertisement Directions Construction Paper Colored pencils, markers, pens, crayons etc. SEQUENCE OF THE LESSON: 1. WARM-UP QUESTIONS AND REVIEW INTRODUCTION: BODY: 1. Take out What Invention HW a. Go over the What Invention HW as a class
2 1. Pass out Invention & Advertisement Directions and Rubric 2. Read through the directions together as a class. 3. Students will create a write up of their new invention that will include all of the information that is required as per the Invention & Advertisement Directions 4. Once students complete the write up they will begin the advertisement portion of the Invention & Advertisement Project CLOSURE: a. Students will pick up construction paper of any color they want and create an advertisement for their invention. b. The advertisement will include all of the information that is required as stated in the Inventions & Advertisement Directions. 1. After students have complete their write up and advertisement they will give an oral presentation. Using their advertisement they will go to the front of the class and tell the rest of the class about their invention. Once again what must be included in their oral presentation is found on the Invention & Advertisement Directions. ASSESSMENT: 1. Students will turn in their rubric and write up to Ms. Stone as they go up to present their invention and advertisement to the class. DIFFERENTIATION: Verbal/Linguistic Learners: oral presentation Visual Learners: Warm-Up on SmartBoard, Invention Advertisement Kinesthetic Learners: Creation of Invention Advertisement Intrapersonal Learners: Oral Presentation Interpersonal Learners: Individually completing write-up and advertisement
3 INVETION & ADVERTISEMENT DIRECTIONS Directions: Complete the following steps for the INVENTION & ADVERTISEMENT PROJECT 1. Think of/create and invention. It can be anything you like, but it must have a clear purpose. So, think about why you are creating this invention and what it will do. 2. After brainstorming an invention you will do a write-up of the invention. In the write up you must have the following items and the write-up must be at least 4 sentences longs. a. What is the name of your invention? b. What will your invention do? c. Who will your invention help? d. What will your invention sell for? 3. Once you have completed the write up you will get a piece of construction paper and crayons, colored pencils, or markers and created the advertisement for your invention. The advertisement poster MUST be neat and show that you put effort into making it. You must include the following in your advertisement poster. a. The title b. A picture of the invention c. The cost of the invention 4. After the advertisement posters have been completed each student will give an oral presentation of their invention. Students will go to the front of the class with their advertisement and tell the class the following information about their invention. a. The name of the invention b. What the invention will do c. Who the invention will help d. How much the invention will cost e. The class can then ask (2) questions of the inventor 5. After your oral presentation TURN IN your poster!

Spoke with emphasis and knowledge of their invention. Advertisement met all of the guidelines. It was neat and showed a great amount of effort. Student created a new invention. It was very creative and an original idea, that clearly articulated the purpose of the invention. Student gave the name of the invention, what it would do, and who it would help, along with the price it will sell for. Student followed all of the instructions Student had occasional stumbles and many ums and long pauses. Advertisement met some guidelines. It was lacking neatness and showed some amount of effort. Student created an invention that was lacking creativity. The purpose of the invention was vague. Student gave 2 out of the 4 pieces of information required in the written portion. Student followed most of the instructions Student did not complete the requirements for the oral presentation. Students spoke quietly and could not be heard during the presentation. Advertisement is sloppy. It showed very little effort. The invention created was severely lacking creativity. There was no clear purpose of the invention whatsoever. Student gave none of the required information; written portion was completely off topic. Student followed few of the instructions Total Points: Comments:
