3 Summary of Draft Decision 6.3/1 Requests the Secretary General: To produce a general information brochure entitled Air Pollution, Climate and Agriculture by December 2016; To provide support from existing sources to develop a regional pilot project on the impacts of the atmospheric composition on agricultural production, in particular through enhancement of the tropospheric ozone monitoring in agricultural areas; Requests the presidents of CAS and CAgM: To use the existing structures and experts of their respective Commissions to support common activities (biomass burning, nitrogen cycle, IG 3 IS) Explore future need for possible joint CAgM/CAS Expert Team
4 Summary of Draft Decision 6.3/2 Component 1: Seminars and simple rain gauges. Improving seed calendars, improved data bases. Component 2: Training. Improvement of technical skills on crop modelling, remote sensing and GIS at NMHSs. Component 3:Improved climate and weather communication for agricultural decision making. Component 4: Evaluation of impacts of the use of weather and climate information in agriculture. Component 5: Improvements in access to weather and climate information for women in agriculture. Component 6: Development of weather and climate risk management in agriculture and food security.
5 Roving Seminars In Nigeria Dec 2015 Two Locations in Nigeria 114 farmers/fishermen participated, 86 males, 28 females. Lectures conducted in both English, Hausa (local language) Organizers: NiMet, All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), State Ministry of Ag & Rural development, and Agriculture Development Prog. (ADPs) Seminar Topics included: Weather and climate of the different locations; Observed variability and changes in the climate; Impacts on fishing/farming activities; NiMet s climate information services that address these impacts; Highlights of 2015 Seasonal Rainfall Prediction; Farmers perspective of climate change; Level of the fishermen/farmers awareness on NiMet s activities; Identification of farmer s climatic information needs to improve NiMet s service delivery in this regard.

23 Use of sub seasonal forecasts in applications Growing, and urgent, requirement for the employment of subseasonal predictions for a wide range of societal and economic applications which include: Warnings of the likelihood of severe high impact weather (droughts, flooding, wind storms etc.) to help protect life and property Humanitarian Planning and Response to disasters Agriculture particularly in developing countries e.g. wheat and rice production Disease planning/control e.g. malaria, dengue and meningitis River flow for flood prediction, hydroelectric power generation and reservoir management for example
