Climate Services for Agriculture and Food Security in the Caribbean Adrian Trotman Chief, Applied Meteorology and Climatology Caribbean Institute for Meteorology and Hydrology The Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre CCCCC International Conference on Climate Change for the Caribbean 9-13 October 2017, Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago
CSIS for Agriculture Packaging and Dissemination Regional CAMI Bulletin (since 2011), now the Caribbean Agro- Climatic Bulletin of the CariSAM Key messages quick information Information on month just ended Recent related news and weather and climate related impacts on agriculture submitted by countries Regional climate outlook what is important to know about the climate over the next 3 months Climate Smart Advisories implications of the climate information how to reduce rick of loss and disaster
USER Interface Mechanisms Forums with the farming community and agricultural extension agencies to promote a better understanding of the applications of weather and climate information. First through CAMI, Now PICSA. CariCOF Wet/Hurricane and Dry Season There is special emphasis on Agriculture and Food Security at the Dry Season CariCOFs Means for communication, awareness, education, and feedback. Stakeholder meetings bring meteorologists and climatologists and the user-community together to discuss climate forecasts and other information; and provide feedback. Builds trust and understanding On-Line e.g. Portal of the Caribbean Society for Agro-Meteorology (CariSAM)
CARISAM PORTAL USER INTERFACE PLATFORM A professional community supported by an interactive online portal which is designed to enhance collaboration and dialogue between the Caribbean agricultural and food security community (including forestry), and meteorologists and climatologists. weather and climate information resource tailored climate information products publication hub discussion forum online training Builds the capacity of agricultural practitioners to use climate information and links them to key agencies and specialists at national, regional and international levels
Consortium of Sectoral EWISACTs Partners The Consortium is a key regional mechanism to champion the design, development and delivery of tailored climate products and services in the agriculture and food security, disaster risk management, health, tourism, water sectors and energy. CTO and CHTA sign the LoA, September 16th, 2016 Health Agriculture Energy Regional Consortium Water DRM Tourism Climate CWWA signs the LoA, October 26th, 2016 Co-design Co-develop Co-deliver Products & Services CARDI and CDEMA sign the LoA, December 6th, Consortium Meetings hosted by CIMH: May 2015, October 2015, July 2016 ~20 news articles featuring the Consortium and the signing of the LoA CARPHA and CIMH sign the LoA, April 26th, 2017
PICSA key principles Climate Information Historical Records Forecasts Farmers Challenges Opportunities Options Crops Livestock Livelihoods The Farmer Decides Participatory Decision Making Tools Options by Context

Long Before the Season Historical Climate Data Crop + Livestock Options Just Before the Season Seasonal Forecast & Revise Plans During the Season Short-term Forecasts & Warnings Shortly After the Season Review weather, production, forecasts & process Participatory Planning 13 Jul Jun 13 Jun 29 May 14 May 29 Apr gfedcb sans sequence seches (10 jours dans 21) gfedcb Premiere date pour le semi

So how might the forecast just before the season force a rethink, by the farmer, of the RAM?do?
Capacity Building; Research and Development Apart from training of NMHSs CariCOF Stakeholder Forum - Dry Season (agriculture and water); Drought monitoring, management and planning - important to agriculture; Extension Services and Farmers (PICSA) Heat and human health (the farmer?); other applications in livestock and poultry health Social Sciences research to enhance climate services In progress, research on capacities of NMHS and User Needs Assessments (including needs of farmers, Extension Officers and Ag policy makers) Under Italian-funded REACH project renewed focus on pest and diseases modeling, irrigation modeling agriculture specific products Toward weather (including flood) and climate impacts forecasting
Future Work Agriculture tailored climate products to augment the packaging of climate products e.g. REACH (irrigation information and select pests and diseases) but research and modeling, one of the pillars of the GFCS is key to this more investment needed in research Data are important not just meteorological data (in ag-important communities/districts), but also biological (crop, animal, pests and diseases) and soil CID would very important here Monthly educational webinars on CariSAM portal PICSA roll out across Guyana and other parts of the Caribbean farmer also engaged more Drought Management plans for the Ag Sector as annexes to existing Disaster Risk Management plans?
Thank you
