Malting Barley Report August 16, 2012 Sweden East West: 15% of malting barley Now about 15% harvested. Fields are looking good. Also here protein levels on the low side reported. Harvest continues under good weather conditions. Lake of Mälaren 30% of malting barley Delay of harvest has been catched up. Expectation is start in about one week. Fields are showing large differences depending on: -sowing time -soil type -amount of rain received East 15% of malting barley Now about 5% harvested. No results yet. Harvest continues under good weather conditions. South 40% of malting barley Now about 50% harvested. As weather forecast is very positive main harvest will be finished already by the beginning of next week o Viking Malt

Sweden News from the fields: Harvest is now in full swing in the South and in in the West, in the East just started and around Lake Mälaren still one week to start. Reports are showing yields over average, very good natural calibration but proteins in the low range. It is very often so that first harvested fields are lower in protein but how much the average will increase is hard to estimate. As there was some secondary growth in the fields there is a smaller amount of green kernels in samples directly from field but the will be removed in cleaning after drying. In principle no visual detection of red kernels in fields or samples.

First sample results: Moisture Protein Sweden (South) Quench 12,5 13,2 % 9,0-10,3 % Tipple 11,8-13,1 % 9,0-9,6 % Rosalina 13,5 9,7% Finland Conditions Dry and sunny spell in August has had a wished positive effect on the development of the crops after cool and rather moist July Weather forecast is still favorable at least for the next 5-7 days The damaged areas due to heavy rains and floods in the north-west and middle Finland do not affect the malting barley quantity Field remarks The barley fields are finally ripening and turning yellow

The main variation between fields and plants is mainly the degree of development in different areas o No remarkable findings of Fusarium on ears o Some plant diseases and weeds can be found to some extent o The crops look in general good and healthy, no lodging The harvesting has started in the south of Finland, mainly on rapeseed and winter rye. Some barley fields have also been cut. Barley field in Lammi Barke ear Expectations The quantity and quality expectations are still positive for barley, it is up to the harvesting conditions from now on The harvesting risk has slightly decreased due to good weather over last two weeks The warm and dry period is still important for the main crop harvesting Estimated time of peak harvest period is the end of August / early September The estimate for the spring barley crop yield and protein content is the following:

The crop yield (sato, upper map) and protein (valkuaispitoisuus, lower map) estimate for 2 row spring barley (based on 15.8). Estimate done by MTT (Agrifood Research Finland). Barley results First pre sample of Scarlett received, protein 10,7 % and moisture 13,7 % Main varieties will be Barke and Tipple covering more than half of the contracted volume. Lithuania News from the fields The harvest is going slowly because of many interruptions depending on rainfall. Farmers are using every sunny hour for harvesting. Barley is harvested with moisture contents of 20-25% and drying is necessary and used. The weather forecast is showing a few sunny days in front -which will bring the harvest a good part forward.

Yield: Very good yields so far. Average yield from our barley suppliers about 5 ton/ha - which is much over the 5 years mean of about 3,5 ton/ha Winter wheat exceeding 8 ton/ha and more. Quality: Malting barley proteins are in the lower range with an average of about 10,0%. Calibration above 2,5 mm over 90%; Very few samples have observable red kernels. General: Lithuania got a more wet harvest than expected. There are some problems with logistic and drying facilities but malting barley has first priority for drying. The weather development the next couple of days will have big influence to country grain quality and the usable amount of barley for malting purposes. Denmark Harvested Yield [t/ha] Trend Yield [t/ha] Protein [%] Screening [%] Lolland and Falster 70% 7,3 6,5 9,2-9, Sealand East 35% 7,0 6,2 9,5-10, Sealand West 25% 6,8 6,0 9,5-9, Fyn 20% 6,5 6,0 9,4-10, Jylland South 20% 5,2 5,0 10,0-11, Jylland Middle/South 10% 5,5 5,0 9,5-10, Jylland Middle 3% 6,0 5,5 9,5-10, Jylland North 0% 6,0 Denmark estimate 20% 5,6 5,0 9, Sample results: Denmark ( Falster) Moisture Protein Quench 15,1 % 8,9 % Propino 14,9 % 8,7 % Tam Tam 15,2 % 9,2 %

Price notifications for malting barley Crop 2012 Crop 2013 FOB DK / SE 249 /t 1.h. October 238 /t 1.h. October The feed grain market will for the next couple of months - until crop in Argentina and Australia will be harvested - have the largest influence on malting barley prices. Just now there is a large interest for short term deliveries of feed barley seem that consumers are very short covered. A lot of large cargos feed barley have been sold out from EU and farmers could be tempted to sell of some malting barley qualities to feed for short term income and very low quality demands.
