INGA? What is Inga A brief history Recent development The current tender
WHAT IS INGA?
What is INGA? The best hydroelectric site in the World Total potential 44 GW (roughly equivalent 44 nuclear power stations)
What is INGA?
What is INGA? A world class river Second only to the Amazon in terms of average flow and catchment basin. A length ranking 8 th or 9 th (depending on source of information) with nevertheless some 4700 km. An exceptionally stable hydrology (because it collects water from both the southern and northern hemisphere)
What is INGA? Location Roughly 200 km West of Kinshasa Roughly 100 km East of the ocean The Congo runs in a fairly shallow plateau for most of its course gathering an enormous amount water. Contrary to most other rivers we know, it then drops about 100m over about 10 km just before reaching the ocean. This is where it packs this extraordinary amount of power.
A BRIEF HISTORY
A brief history Discovered by Stanley during his expeditions in the 1870 Not as a source of power but as an impediment to navigation.
A brief history The hydropower potential of GRAND INGA, although likely known much before, was first investigated starting in A number of feasibility studies followed thereafter and are summarized in the following slides
A brief history Key characteristics were recognized right from the start: an ideal site (large drop over a short reach, close to the ocean and its means of transportation) a favorable layout and topography (which limits the amount of construction works) ideally suited for a construction in stages (to adapt to the evolution of the surrounding infrastructures and demand) possibility to build a low head stage followed by a high head stage
Grand Inga projet 1955
Grand Inga projet 1957
Grand Inga projet 1960
Grand Inga projet 1971
Grand Inga projet 1974
A brief history A production project also requires a transmission network. 3 major backbones were envisioned: The Grand Inga Egypt interconnection (with the possibility of feeding into the Mediterranean loop) The Grand Inga South Africa interconnection (with different routes and end points) The Grand Inga Nigeria interconnection
Grand Inga transmission
A brief history Where do we stand now? The 2 first stages are built: Inga 1 commissioned in the 1970 s Inga 2 commissioned in the 1980 s Total installed capacity of ~1800MW (2 nuclear power stations)
Inga 1 et 2 (1970 s and 1980 s)
RECENT DEVELOPMENT
The recent development starts in 2008 Feasibility study for Inga 3 by SNC Lavalin (supported by Canadian financing) Sponsoring by BHP Billiton (wants to build an aluminum smelter in Banana) A classic variant for Inga 3 with a set of tunnels taking water from the Inga 1 & 2 canal Update in 2010 by Tractebel Engineering as engineering advisor to the DRC government
Inga A Alternate SNC LAVALIN (Inga 3(3D) 2008) 3C 3B 3D Alternate Tractebel (Inga )
Inga , GDRC launches a prequalification 6 candidates are prequalified BHP Billiton main off tacker 2011, GDRC launches 1st tender 3 of the prequalified candidates respond Chinese led consortium ProInga consortium Canadian led consortium 2012, BHP Billiton withdraws 2013, RSA enters as major off taker
Grand Inga Almost in parallel, with the financial backing of the AfDB, GDRC launches Grand Inga feasibility study (EDF AECOM) It proposes a staged development: Inga 3BC Inga 3HC Inga 4 to 8 (Briefly summarized in the following slides)
Inga3 BC (low head)
Inga 3 HC (high head) construction
Inga 3 HC (high head)
Grand Inga Staged construction of the production facilities No new production facility when going from Inga 3BC to Inga3 HC A new separate power house for, each further stage (Briefly summarized in the following slides)
Inga 3 high head MW
Inga MW

Inga MW
Inga MW
Inga MW
Grand Inga The envisioned 3 major backbones remain but with a focus on the RSA interconnection: The Grand Inga South Africa interconnection (with different routes and end points) The Grand Inga Egypt interconnection (with the possibility of feeding into the Mediterranean loop) The Grand Inga Nigeria interconnection
Inga MW
The current tender
Project Inga 3BC June 2015, GDRC launched a new tender process to select: A developer (up to financial close) A concessionaire (construction and operation) Scope: Project Inga 3BC 4800 MW RSA as main off tacker for 2500 MW A new transmission line from Inga to Johannesburg
Project Inga 3BC 3 Candidates: Chinese led consortium ProInga consortium Canadian led consortium (has recently withdrawn) Deadline for proposals: July August 2016 Expected commercial operation: 2024
Why do we believe in it?
CREDIBILITY The project has tremendously gained in credibility since 2010
CREDIBILITY In a nutshell, credibility is underpinned by the fact that there is: a crying need for energy and electricity an economically attractive and viable solution a structured process an improved legal framework IFI backing strong candidates of which ProInga, a strong team of international leading firms an educational process by which the various players have become familiar with PPP development
CREDIBILITY We like to illustrate the need with what one of our members call a one page business plan
ProInga Who is ProInga One of the candidates for the next stage of development of Grand Inga A strong consortium of first rate leading international firms
ProInga ProInga members
