1 California California Artichoke Advisory Board Board Annual Report News of the Board The Board Members Michael Scattini, President Dale Huss, Vice President Joe Micheli, Jr., Secretary Chris Drew Steve Jordan David Martella Adrian Zendejas Alternates Francisco Castenada Lionell Handel Hugo Tottino California Artichoke Advisory Board In existence since 1960, when growers voted to approve a marketing order and to assess themselves for its activities, the California Artichoke Advisory Board has focused on research, primarily through the Artichoke Research Association, for solutions to the insect and disease problems in artichokes for the past 15 years. Generic promotion is a secondary function and is mostly performed through the board s website, The marketing order is revisited every 5 years to determine the applicability of the board s performance and its continuance. The next hearing will be held in January ******************
2 In the Field The Year In large part due to the strategically timed freezes and frosts in the first quarter of the New Year 2013, total production for the year was down to its lowest since The total of cartons marketed for the crop year was 3,672,812, produced on 6,485 acres. In the Office The website was revamped and updated, resulting in a brand new look, easier mobility, more recipes, photos and videos. Information and connection to other artichoke sites are easily accessible. Contacts through the website resulted in large exposure for artichokes in a US commissary monthly booklet, and the board sponsored demonstrations and field tours throughout the Artichoke Festival. The Budget, P.O. Box 747, Castroville, CA Income Budget Actual Balance Carryover 66,000 76,302 10,302 Carton Assessment (@.075) 285, ,350-9,650 Acreage Assessment (@1.00) 6,000 6, Other 125 1,184 1,059 Total 357, ,321 2,196 Expenditures Management 32,742 32,742 0 Financial & Compliance Audits 6,600 6, Office/Computer Equipment 3,600 3, Insurance 900 1, Telephone 2,000 1, Postage/Freight Rent/Utilities 5,300 5, Travel/Mileage Promotion 2,000 1, Website/Internet 3, ,600 Research 258, , Marketing Branch 14,000 12,322 1,678 Contingency 27, ,983 Total 357, ,118 34,007
3 Budget Review ************ Having approved $.075/carton and $1.00/acre as the assessment rate for the crop year, the board planned on an income of $391,000 from those assessments. While the acreage assessment totaled a little over the estimate, the carton assessment was $ 9,650 below. However, this deficit was erased by the overage of $10,000 in carryover from the previous year. Savings of $4,346 in operating expenses and $1,677 in Marketing Branch allocation helped to realize an anticipated carryover of $36,200 for the next crop year. Research consumed 72%of the planned budget and 80% of the actual budget. Management costs were 9% of the planned budget and 10% of the actual budget. Marketing Branch (including the required annual compliance audit) totaled.038% of the planned and.042% of the actual budget. ************* Cartons Produced by Month , , , , , Avg. 200, ,000 0 JUL AUG SEP OCT NOV DEC JAN FEB MAR APR MAY JUN Total Production : 3,672,812 Average Production: 4,082,642 ( ) ************* The Continuing Quest for Control At the Artichoke Research Association Weed and Disease Control A study of the efficacy and phytotoxicity of Chateau (flumioxazin) for pre-emergence weed control in perennial artichokes was performed. Good results were achieved at the 3 to 9 ounce rate for 5 to 6 months. Studies were begun to determine the amount of residue flumioxazin left in the field. A trial study of penoxsulum and Pindar GT was performed to determine efficacy in controlling winter weeds and oxalis. Results showed excellent weed suppression for 5 months,, no phytotoxicity was detected with a significant increase in bud yield during winter. The efficacy of Flint (trifloxystrobin) against Ramularia Leaf Spot an annual artichokes was examined with results showing very good control. Other studies of various fungicides against powdery mildew in annual artichokes demonstrated that Flint, along with Rally and Quadris were very efficient.
4 A test of control of botrytis by various fungicides resulted in best control by Pristine with Quadris and Flint following. The Artichoke Research Association received registration of Gem (trofloxystrobin for use against powdery mildew in May. Insect and Symphylan Control Field trials were held to test various insecticides against Garden Symphylan in annual artichokes. Infestation was monitored with potato bait traps, plant vigor, growth and bud production were measured. Bifenthrin controlled the number of symphylans best, while Ecotec treated plants had the best consistent vigor and a low rate of Ecotec application the highest bud production. A laboratory study for the control of Garden Symphylan prior to transplantation by various insecticides used as a root drench was performed as well as a laboratory study of those insecticides as a soil treatment for control. Bifenthrin performed best in both studies over Radiant, Ecozin, and Actara. A field evaluation of various insecticides (Diamond, Dimilin, Proclaim, and Radiant) against the artichoke plume moth was performed. Studying the ovicidal effect of each, the study resulted in Dimilin performing best. Studying the insecticides for their effects as larvicides resulted again with Dimilin demonstrating superiority. Another field study of the efficacy of various insecticides for the control of proba bug in annual artichokes was performed. Actara performed best at control of adults and nymphs. Metaldehyde resistance in grey garden slugs was studied in the laboratory and the slugs from the Molera Ranch were slightly more resistant than those from the Borchard Ranch. *******************************************
