2 Seedtech Handbook 2016/17 SEED TECHNOLOGY WELCOMES YOU TO OUR TRIAL SITE TO VIEW THE CEREAL AND BEAN VARIETIES THAT ARE BEING TRIALLED BY US IN THIS YEAR WE ARE TRIALLING OVER 900 VARIETIES IN OVER 1,800 PLOTS. Varieties included are commercial Irish lines, those going through official trials that are showing commercial potential plus new and retest lines supplied by various breeders throughout Europe. Our trial site provides a severe test to each and every variety with regard to disease pressure on an annual basis, so any variety that performs satisfactorily at our location would be in a good position to progress further. Every growing season provides numerous and different challenges to a variety. In order for it to succeed commercially, a variety must be a robust type that can perform at any location in Ireland. Varieties that progress from Seedtech trials into official trials will complete at least three further years in official trials before they can be considered for inclusion in an Irish Recommended List. You will appreciate that all the attributes of a variety are strenuously assessed throughout these trials. Seedtech s goal is to progress with only those varieties that will provide the highest possible return to the grower. Regarding winter wheat and now spring wheat trials, we test early generation material in order to identify specific varieties that may be ideally suitable for Irish growers i.e. varieties that combine high yields etc. with excellent disease resistance to Septoria Tritici, in particular. We hope that you find the new layout of our variety handbook useful and informative. Thank you for visiting our trial site and I hope you have an enjoyable and informative experience. 4 Hybrid Winter Barley WHY CHOOSE HYBRID Hybrid barley is revolutionising winter cereals. More and more farmers are choosing not only to sow hybrid barley but to increase their acreage and to become a part of the hybrid barley revolution. With hybrids ensuring high yields and more cash consistently year after year, there is no reason why farmers should not join the Hyvido club. In 2015 Recommended List trials the 14% yield advantage Quadra had over Cassia was worth 201/Ha at a green grain price of 135/T. That can be the difference between a profit and a loss!! GRAIN QUALITY Whilst all six rows have a smaller grain the hybrids bushel compare very favourably to the latest 2 rows: Hectolitre weight (kg/hl) Quadra Hybrid 67.5 Volume Hybrid 67.2 Tower 2 Row 67.5 Infinity 2 Row 67.9 Source: Department of Agriculture Food and the Marine 2016 Breeder comment It's great to see Irish growers continue to expand their use of hybrids. The hetrosis associated with hybrids leads to stronger more vigorous plants with improved establishment, better winter survival, better disease resistance, better grain quality, all contributing to higher yields and less risk. In the UK more and more growers are also switching to hybrids and we expect hybrids to take up to 100,000 hectares of the UK market this autumn. PROFITABILITY IS THE DRIVING FACTOR BEHIND HYBRIDS SUCCESS.

6 Hybrid Winter Barley Three easy steps to growing high yielding Hybrid Barley crops» Reduced seeding rate (200 seeds / m 2 )» Early application of Nitrogen» Timely application of growth regulators HYBRID Hyvido Quadra A STEP FORWARD IN YIELD AND HECTOLITRE WEIGHT IN RL TRIALS The market leader, Quadra offers the very highest yield potential, now provisionally recommended by the Department of Agriculture Food and the Marine at 110 for yield. It out performs all other varieties on the list. With a specific weight of 67.5 on the list, Quadra is the first hybrid in Ireland to offer grain quality that competes with two rows, and with the best disease resistance package, it consistently delivers an exceptional return on growers seed investment. Hyvido Volume THE FIRST HYBRID BARLEY TO BE ACCEPTED BY IRISH FARMERS AND DESERVEDLY SO Volume offers tried and trusted yield potential. The first hybrid to get a grower following in Ireland and until recently it was the variety to beat. It is fully recommended by the DAFM in 2016, only just pipped to the post on yield by Quadra. If you are new to growing hybrids then this is probably the variety for you, it offers consistency and high yields no matter what the soil type or season and offers the benefits of excellent resistance to Rhynchosporium and Net Blotch. Bazooka SHOWS A HIGH YIELD POTENTIAL WITH GOOD DISEASE PACKAGE Bazooka is new to Ireland in It is one of the next generation of Hybrid barleys. In the UK where it is a couple of years ahead of us in Ireland it is the highest yielding variety on the AHDB Recommended List for 2016, outperforming all other varieties in all regions. This consistency is helped by its excellent disease resistance and of particular interest to us in Ireland is its resistance to Net Blotch and Ramularia.

9 9 HYBRID BARLEY AGRONOMY GUIDE 2016 Quadra is the largest variety of winter hybrid barley sown in 2015 closely followed by Volume and are both treated under the same husbandry guidelines below. Post planting there are 3 essential steps to follow to ensure you get the best from your Hyvido hybrid barley crop. 1. Nitrogen Application - Early Application An early application of nitrogen is critical for Hyvido hybrid barley. There is no need to use any more nitrogen than you would for a conventional winter barley. All crops irrespective of sowing date should be inspected prior to nitrogen application to determine tiller numbers per square metre. Heavy crops may show tiller numbers greater than per m 2. The following are the guidelines for nitrogen application based on tiller numbers (in normal situations). Hyvido Hybrid Barley crops sown with tiller numbers less than 1,000 per m 2 Fertiliser Application % of Total 30% 50% 20% Growth Stage Estimated Timings End February / 1st week March End March Mid April Hyvido Hybrid Barley crops sown with tiller numbers greater than 1,000 per m 2 Fertiliser Application % of Total 25% 50% 25% Growth Stage Estimated Timings End February / 1st week March End March Mid April All crops should be inspected by your agronomist prior to planning your nitrogen application programme as crop growth stages can vary from site to site. You must work with your agronomist when calculating nitrogen rates, taking into consideration DAFM regulations and the fertility of the field.

10 Hybrid Winter Barley 10 HYBRID BARLEY AGRONOMY GUIDE Plant Growth Regulators Hybrid barley is drilled at a low seed rate to achieve the full yield and grain quality potential. Growth is rapid from GS 30 on, so the following PGR programmes are recommended: Standard PGR Programme T1 GS Moddus 0.2l/ha + CCC 75% 1.0l/ha T2 GS Moddus 0.3l/ha or Etephon based PGR 3. Fungicide Use - A Robust Fungicide Programme Volume has a good resistance to the key diseases Rhynchosporium and Net Blotch, however to enhance grain fill, yield potential and grain quality a robust fungicide programme should be adhered to. Quadra has an excellent disease package and as with all cereal crops it will respond to a robust disease programme. CORE FUNGICIDE PROGRAMME T0 Amistar Opti ( l/ha) is an appropriate treatment. This treatment will tidy up any Ramularia, Net Blotch or Brown Rust coming out of the winter. Use the higher rate where disease is present. Add Tern 0.5l/ha if Mildew present. Apply at around GS30 when growth begins. T1 Bontima ( l/ha) at T1 will provide clean stress free green lower leaves to build yield potential. T2 Bontima ( l/ha) + Bravo (1.0l/ha) at T2 gives outstanding disease protection and green leaf retention for optimum yield and grain quality.

11 Winter Barley 11 CONVENTIONAL 6 ROW KWS KOSMOS KWS Kosmos HIGHEST YIELDING CONVENTIONAL VARIETY For growers looking for a conventional winter barley that maximises yield and return, then look no further than KWS Kosmos. In the 2015 Recommended List trials KWS Kosmos with a yield of 111%, was second only to the hybrids, being the highest yielding conventional variety in the trial. It has a superb agronomic package with excellent straw strength and excellent disease resistance. The grain quality is very good for a six row more similar to a hybrid than a traditional six row. For fans of conventional six rows this is certainly the one to grow. Winter Barley Recommended List - refer to page 8 NOTES

12 Winter Wheat GARRUS Garrus CHOOSE FOR YIELD AND EASE OF GROWING Exciting new wheat from Seedtech, Garrus is one of the new generation wheats selected by Patsy Keogh, having come through the testing disease nurseries at Seedtech and chosen for its yield and ease of growing. Garrus is up for consideration for the Recommended List post-harvest 2016 having been the highest yielding variety in the trial in 2014 and second by a point in 2015, its future looks bright. SEEDTECH RECOMMEND GARRUS From the trial data to date Garrus also looks very suitable for early sowing having topped the DAFM early sown trials for two years in succession. Its agronomy package is very good with strong straw and good disease resistance. There will be basic seed available in 2016 and limited quantities of C1. 22 Winter Oilseed Rape HYBRID Incentive NEW HYBRID WITH EXCELLENT YIELD OUTPUT» Consistently high gross output» Outstanding vigour in the first 45 days of growth» Excellent resistance to lodging and stem stiffness Incentive is a new hybrid variety from DSV UK, with an excellent gross output 2016/17 AHDB Recommended List. It is not only a true all round performer but its rapid early establishment also gives it several agronomic advantages; a robust package of grain yield stability, oil content, standing power, disease resistance and ability to withstand pest attack. Flash UNQUESTIONED RELIABILITY» Highest yielding hybrid in Irish Recommended List 2015» Tried and trusted. Widely grown in Ireland over many years» Consistent performer over soil types and seasons Flash is grown for its consistency. Reliable high yields year in year out no matter what our climate has thrown at it. A proven performer with a big following of seasoned growers in Ireland. CONVENTIONAL Anastasia SUITABLE FOR LATE DRILLING AND EXCELLENT LODGING RESISTANCE» Excellent gross output» Good autumn vigour, comparable with most hybrids» Very short and very stiff stems with good lodging resistance Anastasia is a very vigorous conventional variety with consistent yield performance supported by good agronomic characteristics and a high oil content. Anastasia has good early vigour and it is a medium early to flower variety. CHARGER Charger HIGH GROSS OUTPUT CONVENTIONAL VARIETY» Widely grown - proven on farm for 3 years» Vigorous autumn growth» Short, stiff straw - low biomass» Early maturing, easy to harvest Having delivered some stunning on-farm performances last year in the UK Charger's popularity should be no surprise. Watch out for its strong early growth habit as it directs all its energy into growth rather than excessive leaf production to create an erect and stiff plant from the word go.

23 23 FLEA BEETLE DISEASE CONTROL In the autumn it is essential to monitor oilseed rape crops for potential flea beetle damage and apply insecticides where necessary. ABOUT FLEA BEETLES:» Adult beetles are up to 3mm long, usually shiny black in colour and may have light coloured stripes down their wing casing» Larvae are small white coloured grubs with brown heads and pairs of fleshy legs» Eggs are tiny opaque yellow elliptical forms, and are laid around plant roots» Adults usually have long, hinged hind legs that enable them to jump like fleas DAMAGE CAUSED: The flea beetle adult feeds on the leaves resulting in small shot like wounds through the leaves. Under heavy feeding the small round holes caused by an individual flea beetle s feeding may coalesce into larger areas of damage. Overall this could reduce your oilseed rape plant establishment significantly. MONITORING & TREATMENT: Inspect crops regularly for signs of insect activity during periods of high risk in September and October. Unseasonable weather can allow early or prolonged pest attacks. Check the whole field for insects as population are often heavier on headlands. If present, the insecticide Karate Zeon/ Karis 10 75ml/ha should be applied at the first signs of attack. Monitor crops carefully for further larvae infestation and repeat days later if necessary. The maximum total doses is 225ml per hectare per crop.

33 33 SPRING OILSEED RAPE AGRONOMY GUIDE Mirakel and Doktrin will be supplied in packs of 2.1 million seeds. This should be sufficient to sow 3 ha. As with autumn sown hybrids, a lower seed rate is required for Mirakel and Doktrin. It should ideally be planted at 70 germinating seeds per m². Seed should be sown when soils have warmed up, during the first three weeks of April. This will give the seeds the best opportunity to germinate and grow. If drilling commences outside this sowing window then higher seed rates should be applied. SOWING DEPTH AND DENSITY: 2-3 cm, depending on soil type, in a sufficiently compact and fine seed bed. WEED CONTROL: Hybrid vigour and early plant development suppress the growth of weeds. However sufficient weed control is important to further ensure good crop development. DISEASE AND INSECT PROTECTION: It is very important to control the flea beetle. Insecticides should be applied if more than 1-2 insects per plant are present in early stages or 3-4 insects prior to onset of flowering. The same control measurement is taken for the pollen beetle before and during flowering. Under wet and warm conditions during flowering a fungicide application against Sclerotinia stem rot should be considered. CONVENTIONAL Ability TRIED AND TESTED CONVENTIONAL VARIETY FOR IRISH CONDITIONS Irish growers keep returning to this tried and tested variety year after year. Ability has been grown successfully in Ireland with consistently high yields year after year. Ability has an impressive gross output (99%) compared to other conventional spring varieties on the Descriptive List It has an excellent yield (98%) and high oil content (44.5%). KEY BENEFITS» Very high oil content combined with high seed yields» Proven track record of consistently high gross output» Excellent all-round agronomic package» Pack size - 10kg or 25kg

34 Spring Bean BENEFITS OF BEANS» The field bean is a highly palatable ingredient for feeding livestock.» Profitability; When prospective prices for cereals are low, field beans are one of the lowest cost and most profitable crops you can grow. The Protein Payment from DAFM is also another benefit to be considered. Spring bean plantings have increased four-fold in the last 3 years. Record yields were achieved last year with yields at 3T+/Acre a regular occurrence. All beans are eligible for protein payments making it a very attractive crop to grow. Beans are suitable for the 3 crop rule under the greening requirements and are also eligible as an alternative EFA crop.» Excellent break crop. Their ability to root deeply and fix nitrogen leaves soil in good condition for following crops.» Easy to grow. Sow with a one pass, apply herbicide, no top dressing, spray twice at most and harvest.» Weather proof at harvest. Even when ripe, beans will withstand weeks of poor weather without significant losses.» Easy to harvest. They are an open crop that is not prone to lodging. CONVENTIONAL Fanfare WHAT'S NOT TO LIKE ABOUT THIS NEW SPRING BEAN, HIGH YIELDING, STRONG STRAW AND HIGH PROTEIN! The highest yielding variety, with the highest protein content on the 2016 Recommended List. It has a very strong straw with excellent standing power. Fanfare is the one to beat! Fuego IRELAND'S MOST POPULAR SPRING BEAN The shortest strawed variety on the 2016 Recommended List. It has the second highest protein content and has proven itself to be consistent and reliable. Fuego has been the main variety grown in Ireland for a number of years and producing consistent yields year on year.

36 Spring Bean BEAN AGRONOMY GUIDE FERTILISER The optimum ph is between 6.5-7, however if the ph reading drops below 6.0 then an application of lime is needed. Medium soils allow good root development and will usually retain enough moisture to meet the needs of the crop. Also, medium type soils will dry out reasonably quickly in the springtime and allow sowing to proceed in good time. The most common trace element deficiencies are of manganese (Mn), magnesium (Mg) boron (B) and sulphur (S). P and K requirements (kg/ha) for beans Soil Index N P K Index Index Index Index 4 0 None None Typical fertiliser application rate based on Soil Index 2 Date Applied Product Rate/ha Pre-sowing or kg/ha CROP PROTECTION WEED CONTROL Beans are very susceptible to weed competition especially in their early stages of growth, therefore a good weed control programme is essential. Nirvana (pendimethalin 250g/l + imazamox 16.7g/l) must be applied before the beans are within 13mm from the soil surface. Lingo (linuron 250g/l + clomazone 45g/l) is a pre-emergence option and should not be applied to broadcast crops. Pre-emergence herbicides should be applied within 48 hours of planting to a fine, firm and level seedbed. Grass-Weed Control post emergence options include Stratos Ultra (cycloxydim 100g/l) 1.5-4l/ha applied from 3 node stage of the crop until before the crop canopy prevents adequate spray penetration. Wild Oat control options include Fusilade Max (Fluazifop - P (-butyl) 125g/l) at 1-1.5l/ha which can be applied from the four true leaf stage or Falcon (Propaquizafop 100g/l) which can be applied before the flower buds are visible at 1.5l/ha. 37 37 BEAN AGRONOMY GUIDE DISEASE CONTROL Chocolate Spot (Botrytis fabae, B. cinerea) Symptoms appear as brown spots, which enlarge to give a more damaging aggressive phase in cool, wet or damp weather. Autumn sown beans are more likely to suffer yield losses, especially where the plant population is high and the crop becomes tall. Ascochyta (Leaf and Pod Spot) This produces brown spots containing distinctive black fruiting bodies (pycnidia). Autumn sown beans are more prone to serious attacks especially in wet conditions. The disease is seed-borne, air-borne and splash dispersed. It is advised to use certified seed only. Downy Mildew (Peronospora viciae) Mildew causes white - greyish pustules on the under-surface of the leaves and is prevalent on spring beans. As Mildew pustules become older they darken to a brown colour. Reason Chocolate Spot Downy Mildew & Bean Rust Rust (Uromyces fabae) Rust is characterised by numerous small reddish-brown pustules on the leaves. It is more serious on spring beans and all varieties are susceptible. Most damage occurs if infection begins during flowering and pod set. Chemical Signum Amistar Folicur PEST CONTROL Pea & Bean Weevil Pea and bean weevil is a grey/ brown weevil with characteristic snout. It feeds on leaves, producing U-shaped notches but it is its larvae that produce most of the yield reductions in beans. Eggs are laid on the soil and the larvae hatch, burying into the soil to feed on the roots. Pea and bean weevil can dramatically reduce root nodule formation and thus nitrogen fixation. Leaf notching should be across the field before you spray an insecticide as notching is common near headlands most years. Black bean aphid - Aphis fabae Black bean aphids overwinter on the spindle tree, migrating to bean and sugar beet crops in the summer. Damage mainly caused by aphid populations which colonise plants prior to flowering. You should only spray if aphids are seen evenly (>5% of plants) across the field as the aphid normally colonises a few plants in an area which is of little consequence. Aphid populations initiated after flowering cause little damage. Date Applied Reason Chemical Start of leaf notching Bean Weevil Cypersect Decis Karate Zeon If 5% of the crop is Black Bean Aphid Aphox infected with aphids DESICCANT AT HARVESTING OPTIONS Bean crops can be desiccated 7-14 days prior to harvest with Reglone or Roundup. If a crop has high levels of weeds present or has a few small late set pods which are still green, a desiccant can aid harvesting. It should be applied when at least 90% of pods are dry and black and most of the beans are dry. 38 Arable Forage Crops WHY TRITICALE? Triticale is a cross between wheat and rye and offers a number of advantages over conventional cereals. It has been bred to combine the higher yield of wheat with the improved disease resistance of rye. TRITICALE FOR WHOLECROP Many farmers are now recognising the benefits of triticale for wholecrop. Wholecrop triticale can be fed to both dairy and beef cattle with excellent results. A recent trial in Holland showed that wholecrop triticale fed equal to wholecrop maize silage with no difference in either intake or lactational performance.
