In2012"13,wegrewoverwinteringonionsoutsidethelowtunnel(uncovered)aswellasinsidethe lowtunnel.whileonionssurvivedunprotectedinbothsites,thesurvivalandspringvigorwere muchlowerwithouttheprotectionofthelowtunnel.forexample,indurham,survivalranged from30"44%outsidethelowtunnel,and62"88%insidethelowtunnel.unexpectedly,survivalof unprotectedplantswasbetterinthecoldersite,n.haverhill(80"85%outsidevs.93"98%insidethe lowtunnel).thismayhavebeenbecausethecoldersitewasmoreprotected(surroundedbytrees, inaslightdepression)orbecauseofextendedsnowcover. 2. Onion+Survival.Inlowtunnels,allvarietiessurvivedthewinterequallywell.In2011"12,survival wasover97%forallvarieties.survivalwasabitlowerin2012"13,rangingfrom62"88%forall varietiesindurham,and96"98%inn.haverhill. 3. Onion+Plant+Vigor.+Inspringofthe2011"12season,varietiesdifferedintermsofplantvigor.The varietieskeepsake,t"420andtopkeeperweresignificantlytallerand/orhadmoreintactleaves thanthetwoleastvigorousvarieties,wallawallaandwinterwhitescallion.bridgerandhi"keeper wereintermediate.weassessedvigorforonlyasubsetofvarietiesin2012"13.wefoundthatvigor wasgreaterfortheearlierfallplantingthanforthelaterplanting,andforonionsthathadbeen underlowtunnelsthanforthosethathadbeenoutside. Bolting.Boltingistriggeredbyavernalizationperiod(exposuretoprolongedcoldtemperatures) oncetheplanthasreached4"6trueleaves.bylateaprilinbothyears,flowerstalks(scapes)were evidentonsomeplantsofseveralvarieties.onboltedplants,scapeswereevidentinthecenterof thebulbasasmallpithycore.forlaterharvestdates,boltingrenderedbulbsunmarketable becauseitreducedbulbsizeandbecausethemajorityofthebulbwasthelargepithyscape. a b c + + Thepercentageofboltingwashigherinthefirstyear(2011"12)thaninthesecondyear(2012"13), acrossallvarieties.inbothyears,theearlierfallplantingshowedahigherpercentageofbolting thanthelaterplanting. Byharvesttime,varietiesshowedsignificantdifferencesinpercentageofbolting.In2011"12,Walla Wallahadnearly100%boltedplants,significantlymorethanallothervarietiesexceptHiKeeper, whichaveraged69%bolting.in2012"13,wallawallashowedmuchlessbolting(5%),butthered cultivarsredbill,redwing,andcabernetallhadover20%bolting.virtuallynoboltingwas observedinthen.haverhillexperimentin2012"13. WallaWalla(SW)isalong"daysweetonioncommonlyfall"plantedinthePacificNorthwestasan overwinteringonion.inthefirstyearofourtrial,itboltedquicklyanddidnotproducelargebulbs, perhapsbecauseitboltedbeforeourdaysreachedthe14"16hourdaylengthrequiredtoinitiate bulbing.inthesecondyearofourtrial,wallawallaproducedverynicebulbsanddidnotshowa highpercentageofbolting. Top=Keeper(T),Hi=Keeper(T),T=420(JSS),Keepsake(T)andBridger(JSS)areyellowstorage varietiesthatproducedhighqualitybulbsinourproductionsystem.thesevarietiesvariedintheir tendencytoboltandinoverallbulbsize,butallproducedmarketableearlyonions. Redonionswereincludedonlyinthesecondyearoftheevaluation,2012"13.RedWing(JSS)and RedBull(JSS)areredstorageonions,RedBaron(T)isaredscallion,andCabernet(JSS)isanearly summerredonion.ofthese,cabernetwastheonlyonethatproducedmarketablebulbs,butit exhibitedarelativelyhighpercentageofbolting(20%). 6.
