3 NUTRITION Proper Feeding of Tubs and Minerals Loose minerals and feed tubs are important elements of any successful pasture management plan. Cattle need to consume the products at the recommended rate to get the maximum benefit. Check the label on your free choice tub or mineral to calculate consumption rates. For higher consumption, put the mineral feeders near loafing areas or water. To lower consumption, move the products further away from hightraffic areas. Cattle may over consume if they haven t had a loose mineral or a tub for a few months. To minimize this, fill the cattle up on salt for two weeks before your mineral program. Place feeders in areas where cattle don t like to graze to improve pasture use. Finally, be sure to always calculate how long a bag of mineral or tub should last your herd. Then monitor disappearance rates before you make adjustments. 5 FORAGE Reaping the Benefits of Rotational Grazing Rotational grazing offers a different approach to pasture management. Your first step is to determine where the water source is; cattle graze more efficiently if they are no farther than 800 1,000 feet from their drinking source. Consideration points: Determine the number of paddocks you need based on herd size. Developing a rotational grazing system truly can be as simple as dividing the current grazing area in half. Only four tools are needed to put up the actual grazing area: an energizer, posts, reels and polywire fencing. Determine the condition of the plots, availability of forage and how the pasture grows to prevent overgrazing. Cattle must be trained to electric fencing prior to turnout.
