1 WESTERN AUSTRALIA Internationally approved, export malting quality barley. KEY FEATURES } An internationally recognised malting barley with export malt characteristics comparable to BaudinA Excellent grain plumpness, good test weight and high levels of pre-harvest sprouting tolerance } Ideally suited to medium to higher rainfall environments with average yields exceeding 3t/ha } Good straw strength and lodging resistance } Good leaf disease resistance profile } Available for farmer-to-farmer trading
2 MATURITY BassA is a medium maturing, semi-dwarf malting barley. It has a prostrate growth habit like BaudinA and reaches awn-peep slightly later than Scope CLA and VlaminghA. RAINFALL BassA is ideally suited to the medium to high rainfall zones of Western Australia. Bass A best performance is seen in longer growing seasons and when the variety is sown within its recommended sowing window. Med mm Late April - Mid May Ideal Sowing Periods High > 480mm Early-Late May MARKET ACCEPTANCE BassA possesses excellent export malting qualities and is now considered an internationally approved malting variety with WA grower premiums now available for the variety. DISEASE BassA has an improved disease resistance profile over BaudinA. It offers improved powdery mildew resistance and scald resistance. BassA is now considered susceptible to leaf rust following the discovery of a virulent Rph3 leaf rust pathotype, which can be effectively managed with a foliar fungicide program. For Net Form of Net Blotch and Spot Form of Net Blotch, a foliar fungicide such as AMISTAR XTRA or COGITO may be required. For powdery mildew, additional management techniques will be of benefit. JOCKEY treated seed in Western Australia, along with the application of foliar fungicides such as AMISTAR XTRA will provide the best level of control and protection. 4 GRAIN QUALITY BassA possesses excellent export malting qualities and exhibits a malt quality profile similar to BaudinA. Protein BassA is an excellent protein accumulator, with protein levels consistently exceeding BaudinA by 0.5 %. BassA has excellent grain plumpness, similar to VlaminghA and has good test weight. BassA produces low screenings and is considered a high protein accumulator, on average 0.5 % higher than BaudinA. Due to Bass A excellent protein accumulation ability, in-season nitrogen applications need to be monitored to ensure crops are managed to meet the GIWA Malt 1 (CBH) protein receival standards. Hectolitre Weight BassA consistently exhibits hectolitre weight (kg/hl) exceeding BaudinA. 80 Protein (%) BassA BaudinA VlaminghA HindmarshA National NVT Protein (%) Hectolitre Weight (kg/hl) BassA BaudinA VlaminghA HindmarshA National NVT Hectolitre weight (kg/hl) Screenings (%) Screenings BassA has excellent grain plumpness, the plumpest of all commercial malting varieties and has low screenings (<2.2mm) BassA BaudinA VlaminghA HindmarshA National NVT Screenings (%)
5 WESTERN AUSTRALIA PLANT FEATURES BassA has a medium coleoptile length therefore, it is recommended that VIBRANCE be applied to the seed to minimise seed treatment impacts on coleoptile length and subsequent pre-emergent herbicide interaction. This treatment will provide greater sowing depth flexibility and maximise early seedling vigour and emergence. Bass A standability is good and as such PGR s are not normally required, however, with lush crops or very fertile sites the application of a PGR may be required. In these cases use the low rate of MODDUS 200mL/ha at GS 31 to stabilise tillers and promote root development. For more information go to PLANT BREEDING RIGHTS (PBR) AND END POINT ROYALTIES (EPR) BassA is protected by Plant Breeders Rights. Any unauthorised commercial propagation or any sale, conditioning, export import or stocking of propagating material of this variety is an infringement under the Plant Breeders Rights Bass is subject to an EPR of $3.50 per metric tonne (GST exclusive), payable on all production excluding seed saved for future crops. BassA is an InterGrain variety bred by the InterGrain barley breeding team. InterGrain manages the collection of End Point Royalties (EPR) as part of the Plant Breeders Rights variety licencing agreement. The royalties are collected for investment into continued plant breeding research and development of improved varieties for Australian farmers. Cover photo: Barley
