2 Greenhouse Innovation Center Overview The NIC Greenhouse Innovation Center is 45,000 SF of greenhouse and headhouse space. Phase I includes 15,000 SF of greenhouse space which can quickly and economically be expanded to 30,000 SF. The greenhouses are heated and cooled with sustainable energy. The facility features state-of-the-art computer environmental controls and 22-foot eve heights to allow for optimal air circulation. Tailored greenhouse services are available. At full build-out, the NIC Greenhouse Innovation Center will include 60,000 SF of greenhouse space connected to 80,000 SF of office and wet lab space. 4 AMY HILSKE Amy Hilske is the Greenhouse Director at the University of Nebraska Lincoln. Amy has expertise in growing a wide range of agronomic crops including: corn, sorghum, soybeans, wheat, camelina, rice, arabidopsis, etc., in greenhouse and growth chamber applications. Amy is responsible for, in coordination with the University of Nebraska Agricultural Research Division and the UNL Faculty Greenhouse Committee, the operation of all greenhouse and shared plant growth chamber facilities across City, East and Nebraska Innovation Campuses. Previous to her current position, Amy managed UNL s George W. Beadle Greenhouse where she grew and managed genetically modified agronomic research crops for over 10 years. She has worked in greenhouse environments since 1994 and has participated in undergraduate and graduate instruction. Amy grew up on century owned family farm in southeast Minnesota. She earned her Master s Degree in Horticulture from the University of Nebraska Lincoln and has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Horticulture from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. Amy is also a member of the Institutional Biosafety Committee at the University of Nebraska Lincoln. GREENHOUSE INNOVATION CENTER GREENHOUSE SERVICES INCLUDED 01 Planting - basic 02 Dividing 03 Watering 04 Fertilizing 05 Upshifting/transplanting 06 Staking (excludes camelina & arabidopsis) 07 Harvesting (excludes camelina & arabidopsis) research project dependent See Greenhouse Manager 08 Standard soil mixes all preparation & pasteurization 09 Standard fertilizers 10 Standard pots/containers 11 Pot washing 12 Autoclaving 13 Composting 14 Pest Control insects, diseases, rodents 15 Routine maintenance i.e. replace light bulbs, clean screens, etc. 16 Cleaning floor drains 17 Weeding in pots, in ground beds, rocked areas between greenhouses 18 Trash & recycling 19 Cleaning & sterilizing in-between projects 20 Supplies for common activities labels, tape, markers, paper, envelopes for harvesting, bags for harvesting, etc. A fee per hour will be assessed for any services not normally provided under the maintenance categories above. Examples include specialized potting or fertility regimes, seed collection, special autoclaving, and cleanup in excess of usual. Services may be requested in advance or applied at the discretion of the Manager where it is determined necessary or in the best interest of research plants (manager will seek preapproval in all cases). Clients requiring special cultural conditions (including restrictive photoperiod and/or temperature, isolated pest or pathogen research, non-standard cultural methods, etc.) which prohibit shared use of any greenhouse bench, bay or growth chamber, may be assessed fees for the entire bench, bay or chamber and should budget accordingly. All materials and services are for greenhouse facilities (i.e. services & supplies are not for field use).
5 GREENHOUSE DESIGN SPECS 01 Greenhouses constructed to meet Biosafety Level 2 - Plants (BL2-P) requirements. 02 Greenhouses are constructed with 22 eave heights for ample growing space. 03 Door & camera security system for both headhouse & greenhouse. 04 Up to four separate greenhouse rooms. 05 Future expansion and head house support for (2) additional mechanically cooled greenhouses. 06 Generator back-up for portions of headhouse & greenhouse. (Note: The generator does not back up the full facility, only portions.) 07 Headhouse support: +Additional shell space for future tenant fit-outs +(1) Recessed dock that supports tractor trailer deliveries +(1) Grade level dock that supports straight truck deliveries +Wide corridors that allow for pallet jack maneuvering to tenant spaces +Large soil prep room +Autoclave & soil pasteurization capabilities +Large Men & Women s restroom, locker & shower facility +Conference Room +Seed Cooler 08 Mechanically heated and cooled greenhouse system capable of controlling to approximately F during summer temperatures based upon an outdoor design temperature of 97 F and 75 F wet bulb with shade cloth closed and supplemental lights off. Minimum winter temperature of 65 F based upon an out door design temperature of -10 F. Dehumidification provided through air handling system with humidification provided by high pressure fogging system. Vernalization temperatures during the winter can be achieved, if desired. 09 Air side economizers to provide free cooling when outdoor conditions allow through greenhouse air handler and operable ridge vents. 10 Central Argus control system to allow for independent environmental control for each greenhouse room including ability to control the following: +Temperature and Humidity +Humidification Valve (Fog System) +Ridge Vents (Economizer Operation) +Grow Lights +Shade Cloth +Other items as desired, automated water & fertilizer controls 11 Fire protection system. 12 Secure card access to each separate greenhouse room. 13 Adjustable height LED grow lights. 14 Motorized interior shade cloth. 15 Central PH adjusted irrigation system. 16 Central fertilization system. 17 Central RO water system. The greenhouses have the ability to add other user required specialty systems such as CO2 injection to allow for elevated CO2 levels.
6 VINCENT STOERGER Vincent Stoerger is the Plant Phenotyping Facilities Manager at the University of Nebraska Lincoln. Vincent is responsible for operating and maintaining the LemnaTec plant phenotyping systems at the Innovation Campus greenhouse and the Beadle greenhouse. He has experience performing molecular and physiological experiments on several species of plants including arabidopsis, sugar beets, rice, soybeans and miscanthus. He has mechanical experience with hydroponic plant growth systems, automobile and motorcycle maintenance, machining and welding. Vincent grew up in a small farming community in central Illinois. He earned a PhD in Botany specializing in Plant Molecular Biology at Colorado State University and has a Bachelors of Science in Biology and a Bachelors of Arts from Southeast Missouri State University.
