1 Job Information Pack Position Summary Property Name: Property Summary: Drumpeel Farms Limited Drumpeel Farms Limited is a family owned farming business based in Hawkes Bay, just 20 minutes south of Hastings. The business owns two blocks, 1400ha on Horonui Road and 600ha on Drumpeel Road in Otane. The overall business operates as a high performance lamb and bull finishing operation. Drumpeel consists mainly of cereal cropping, processed vegetables and small seed production during the summer which forms a key part of the business. Job Title: Position Overview: Shepherd/Experienced Shepherd This Shepherd/Experienced Shepherd role will be based on the 1400ha Horonui block and on the 600ha block at Drumpeel when required. The role will be 80% stock work and 20% general. Key tasks include: Mustering Skills Pasture & Grazing Management Animal Health Yard Work Drenching/Vaccinating Some Handpiece Skills Drumpeel utilises technology to achieve efficiency within the business, therefore a willingness to learn and use modern farming technology is required. Specialist Skills Required: Confident on quad bikes Experience with mustering on steeper hills Capable team of working dogs Duration of Position: Proposed Start Date: Accommodation: Full-time Permanent 4 weeks from job offer There is a tidy three/four bedroom home on Drumpeel and a ute will be provided to use for accessibility between the two properties. Lifestyle Information Farm Location & Community Information: Schooling: The farm is based at Horonui Road; however the accommodation is at Drumpeel Road which is closer to Otane and Waipawa. There are school buses to Otane and Pukehou Primary Schools and Central Hawkes Bay College in Waipukurau for High Schooling. There are also Primary, High Schools and Boarding Schools in Havelock North, Hastings and Napier, some with bus runs. Farm Information Farm Area (total): Horonui Block 1400ha Drumpeel Block 600ha Contour: Horonui Flat to steeper hill country Drumpeel Easy to hill country Soil Type: Horonui Limestone Peat Flats Drumpeel Fertile Soils Rainfall: Subdivision (average ha): Fences: 900ml The paddocks at 2-3ha average and are cut up into 30ha blocks that each mob of bulls are rotated on. On the hills the paddocks are slightly larger. There are larger paddocks on the fertile flats (60ha) to accommodate the pivot irrigator (which Hugh looks after). These are sub-divided with electrics. Conventional fences with electrics including some high wires. On the flats there are 3-4 wire electrics used for the lamb finishing. 2

3 In the bull areas there are single wire electric s. Woolshed & Yards: Other Buildings on Farm: Weeds: Water: Tracks: There are a very good set of cattle yards that can be used by one person with excellent cattle scales and weigh systems. There is a 4 stand woolshed with covered yards and a good set of yards that are mainly used for sheep work. There also is a portable Prattley drafting set and all stock are EID tagged. There is workshop and implement shed and several haybarns. Some thistle spraying will be required during the summer. All reticulated with bores and auto-pumps. The property is very well tracked and all of these are limed as the property has its own lime quarry. It is very easy to get around and the property is very well set out. Machinery: Bikes, side-by-sides and tractors There is further machinery available from the Drumpeel block Farm Policy & Systems Stock - Breeds/Number: 1500 Bulls 10,000 lambs Stock Policy: Finishing Yearling bulls arrive in September and are kept for a winter. To start they are kept in slightly bigger mobs and once they are weighed, they are put into mobs according to weight. They stay in mobs of 50 until they are sold. Any tail end bulls are sold to the Dairy industry as sire bulls. The owners are aiming for 650kg and 320kg cc weight. Lambs in the Autumn and grown through to 25-26kg cc. Production System Animal Health Practices: Cropping Policy: Intensive Best practice at all times and vigilance is required with animal health. Stock are drenched regularly. Horonui mainly high octane rye grasses with an annual re-grassing programme in place. There is a small amount of maize grown. Drumpeel Drumpeel 80% is used for summer cropping and about 80ha is available in the summer for stock. Drumpeel crops maize, wheat, barley, oats, peas, beans, squash, carrots, sweetcorn and a variety of small seeds. In the winter the farms are fully stocked. Irrigation Systems: There is a pivot irrigator (this is controlled by Hugh). 3
