Grassland Agronomy NEW Grassland agronomy service As part of Mole Valley Forage Services continuing commitment to the farming industries and to supporting our members we have developed a strategic relationship with Dow Agrosciences and Agrovista UK to deliver a market leading grassland and forage agronomy offering, to complement our existing and extensive crop nutrition offering. The aim of the grassland agronomy service is to bring real focus and support to arguably the most important, yet largely overlooked crop in the UK - your grass! Our favourable weather conditions and fertile soils give us one of the UK agriculture s most important assets grass, which as a crop covers 54% of the agricultural land area in the UK. Yet only 7% of this vital crop receives agronomic support each year. Mole Valley Forage Services aims to change this by providing the support, service and expertise as well as new innovations, to maximise the benefits to our farmers, with the aim of producing more of this valuable crop from the assets you have, without the need to purchase further acreage in order to increase yields. Whether establishing a new ley or rejuvenating an existing one it is imperative that the proper attention is given to the control and eradication of harmful weeds and pests that could result is loss of yield, quality or utilisation and therefore money off the farms bottom line. It is essential then that we look at grass and map how to maximise this valuable asset for the benefit of your business. Successful control depends on choosing the correct solution and application timing. For further help and advice please call or the spray helpline below and we will be pleased to offer advice over the phone or arrange for one of our network of grassland agronomists to visit your farm. 4 Introduction Competitive and cost effective milk and meat production relies on the efficient use of home grown forages. Grass has always been the main part of the diet for most ruminants and growing large quantities of high quality material remains critically important to success. At Mole Valley Farmers we try to identify products and systems that help our customers to improve their performance. This catalogue contains well respected mixtures that are updated to incorporate new varieties from the Recommended List. They have been selected with equal importance for their yield, distribution of seasonal growth, heading date, sward density, forage quality, disease resistance and winter hardiness. This approach to mixture design allows a mixture to be supplied that meets the exact needs of the individual farm. The difference, even between the top and bottom of the Recommended List can be significant, with as much as an extra 3 tonnes of silage dry matter available from the highest yielding compared with the lowest. We use the Recommended Grass and Clover Lists (RL) for England and Wales to select top performing varieties from the elite list. The combined expertise of Mole Valley Farmers, Germinal and Barenbrug ensures that the Mole Valley Premier and Rumigan range of mixtures will be the best available. While our standard mixtures suit most farm situations we are pleased to produce mixtures to our customers own specification, if required. 5 Recommended List The Recommended Grass and Clover Lists (RL) for England and Wales provide information on the best performing grasses and clovers available today. The lists are drawn up after rigorous and independent testing for attributes such as yield, feed quality, disease, persistence and seasonal growth patterns. The trials are carried out by NIAB TAG and evaluated by a panel of experts. As few as 1 in 20 varieties of ryegrasses tested will actually make it to full recommendation on the list. Why use varieties from the Recommended List? Few farmers these days would want to use bull or ram genetics from the 1950s in their livestock breeding, but many have outdated varieties in their grassland, along with unsown species of weed grasses. By relying on old varieties, farmers are missing out on the benefits the newer recommended varieties can give. With reseeding now costing around 200/ acre it makes little sense to save 5 or 10 by buying an inferior mix full of unlisted varieties. By choosing a mixture from The Premier Ley Range you can be confident you have chosen a mix that contains top performing varieties that are on the Recommended Lists. The yield advantages used in this booklet are calculated against the average of the Recommended Grass and Clover Lists (RL) for England and Wales. 43 Optimising Production Grass reseeding is the opportunity to over come several possible issues in a field, such as weed infestation, compaction and low ph. In addition to tackling these, it is important to optimise seed germination and promote seedling rooting, followed by strong tillering. Seed genetics are valuable, so the newly germinated plant needs nurturing, firstly by a good seedbed, secondly with an ideal soil conditioner and then good plant nutrition. If established well, a pasture can be maintained to provide many years of efficient forage production. With the right foundations a new grass/clover ley will subsequently show a far better response to nutrient application, quicker regrowth, increased spring/autumn DM production and overall an improved sward density. Fertiliser Helpline: Premier Leys

Soil & Plant Nutrition Grass reseeds Starter fertiliser A good quality, tailor-made starter fertiliser will ensure that the essential nutrients and rooting stimulants are placed in an optimum ph rooting zone, therefore enabling the grass to get the best possible plant root foundation. A starter fertiliser that achieves these essential components is Physiolith. It contains the range of micronutrients that are required by plant root cells that are rapidly dividing and elongating, but also calcium to optimise ph and rooting stimulants to work in a healthy microbially-active soil. Physiolith - an ideal starter fertiliser Soil Testing Soil sample fields in advance of reseeding, to get an indication of the soil s fertility and ph status and future fertiliser and lime applications. Establish soil P & K levels and apply suitable fertilisers or manures before or during soil cultivations. Lime As required, apply lime to the seedbed and incorporate into the top 10cm of soil. Lime can take two or three months to activate, so if ph is particularly low, apply a quick acting granular alternative. Phosphorus (P) & Potassium (K) Soil P and K are essential at reseeding time to aid root and tiller development during the early stages of establishment and to ensure the longevity of ryegrasses in the sward over time. Maintain soils at Target Soil Index 2+/ 3 for maximum production and persistency of clovers and rye grasses. Apply into the seedbed at sowing time. Nitrogen (N) Right hand plant just treated with lime. Left hand plant treated with Physiolith; giving greater plant growth, increased root mass and a stronger more robust long-term plant. Sufficient, but not excessive N is one of the essentials in aiding good grass establishment. Grass seeds have a low N requirement during the early stages of establishment. Too much N will encourage weed growth and competition for new grass seedlings. 44 Premier Leys 2015

Establishing A New Ley 1. Ploughing and working down prior to reseeding is the conventional approach with advantages where ground is rutted, badly poached or uneven. Though more expensive than other methods it usually gives the best results. Weed seed are usually disturbed and a herbicide is normally needed at the establishment stage. 2. Undersowing usually spring barley or an arable silage mix. The seed rate of the arable crop is normally reduced slightly to give enough height and nutrients for the undersown grass to survive until the crop is harvested for grain or wholecrop. This system helps to reduce reseeding costs and produce extra feed while the grass is establishing. 3. Overseeding or Slot Seeding with specialist machines when the existing grass is tightly grazed or mown down. 4. Direct drilling grass after using Glyphosate (Round Up/Clinic Ace). Cautionary Note a. Following a 1-2 year old ley. It is essential to remove, or graze surface trash thoroughly from 5 days after spraying. Grass and clover can be drilled once all trash is cleared. b. Following a long ley/permanent pasture with a surface mat of old grass and dense root structures. Spray the ley in the autumn. Delay direct drilling until the following spring (6 months gap required) and give the mat time to decompose. Removal of the surface mat, followed by harrowing to break the soil surface to the depth of the decaying roots will help aerate the soil and speed breakdown of organic matter. If direct drilled earlier with grass, toxins given off by decaying roots can cause establishment failure. Premier Leys

10 Top Tips For Reseeding 1. Soil test before reseeding correct ph and nutrient deficiencies. 2. Burn off old swards with Round Up (Glyphosate) / Clinic Ace (Glyphosate). 3. Timeliness: either early spring once the soil is warm and has sufficient moisture, or in the autumn up until October (weather permitting). Mixtures with clover should be sown by the end of August. 4. Cultivate to create a fine, firm seedbed to avoid sowing too deep (no deeper than 15mm) and give a good soil to seed contact to aid faster development. 5. Ideally sow into warm, moist soil. 6. Harrow seed lightly and follow up with a Cambridge roll to consolidate the seedbed. 7. Monitor frit fly, leatherjacket and wireworm attack. Treat at first signs of damage. 8. Slug pellets are advisable in wet seasons. 9. Control broad leaved weeds e.g. chickweed, before it takes over the reseed by light sheep grazing or suitable weedkillers. 10. Early management of the establishing sward is key to encourage rapid ground cover. Grazing is preferable to cutting in the first instance. 46 Premier Leys 2015

10 Benefits of Reseeding Reseeding leads to profitable livestock production with a Mole Valley Farmers Premier Ley. 1. 1st year yields will be 25% higher than the same ley after 5 years in average conditions (in dry season or dry sites this can increase by as much as 50%). 2. Increase grass digestibility / palatability. 3. Clean worm free grazing. 4. Weed grasses are less responsive to Nitrogen. 5. Better disease resistance in new varieties. 6. Improved winter hardiness. 7. Better ground cover and persistence. 8. Better feed value and animal performance at grazing. 9. Ability to increase clover contents, for increased feed value and Nitrogen fixation. 10. Improved silage quality for winter feeding. Premier Leys
