2 The World is in Transition towards a Bioeconomy Application of biotechnology within industry benefits society through many ways: Use of renewable resources Enhancing bio-based industry using modern high technology Bioeconomy is the way forward to address key global sustainability challenges such as the increasing global population, food security, depletion of fossil fuel and natural resources, and increasing environmental pressures and climate change. 3 Bioeconomy A Compelling Sector to Drive ASEAN Economic Growth Economic activities based on processes using biological sources to generate sustainable economic, social and environmental development The Vision ASEAN Bioeconomy to be a significant contributor to the regional economy by 2020 and beyond Bioeconomy has the potential to: Promote regional sustainability through maximising bio-resources Generate additional income and value-added jobs Enhance food security and healthcare Create greener economy, shifting towards low-carbon emission 3

4 Bioeconomy as a Global Focus for Growth Emerging trend of economies establishing Bioeconomy Roadmaps: CANADA Bio-Economy Report - The Province of British Columbia UNITED STATES National Bioeconomy Blueprint GERMANY Policy Strategy for Bioeconomy EUROPEAN UNION The Bioeconomy to 2030: Designing a Policy Agenda MALAYSIA Bioeconomy Transformation Programme (BTP) CHINA RUSSIA 2012 Bioeconomy to contribute a global average of 2.7% to GDP by 2030 OECD estimates 2013 SOUTH AFRICA The Bioeconomy Strategy Malaysia is the 2 nd in Asia and 1 st in Southeast Asia to announce a Bioeconomy Initiative 2007 AUSTRALIA 2014 NEW ZEALAND 4

5 Objectives ASEAN Bioeconomy Cooperation There is yet to have a coherent effort to stimulate collaborative opportunities for ASEAN Bioeconomy. This forum is proposed to discuss on the possibility of cooperation among ASEAN economies with the following objectives: 1) Platform for ASEAN economies to share knowledge and best practices on policy strategies, actions and joint activities to promote innovation of Bioeconomy for economic sustainability. 2) Encourage Bioeconomy collaborations interfacing both public and private sectors of ASEAN economies every year to strengthen dialogue among governments, academia and businesses. 3) Bioeconomy as the innovative ecosystem to address cross-cutting issues in the ASEAN region which include environmental sustainability, food security and affordable healthcare. 5

6 Beneficiaries Government Scientific Academia, Industry and Business Communities International Organisations Develop effective policies and innovative strategies. Maximising economies biobased resources for high value products. Tackle global issues such as energy and environmental conservation, food security and affordable healthcare. Reduce gaps between policymakers, industries and academics/research communities. Expand human capital and opportunities in the development of bio-based technologies and resources. Facilitate new technology breakthroughs and commercialisation. Knowledge sharing among ASEAN economies for sustainable economic growth. Strengthen cooperation and understanding within ASEAN region. 6

7 Conclusion Recognising that the ASEAN Bioeconomy is still a relatively new political, economic and social concept to the ASEAN members, we will strive to: Create Awareness Raise ASEAN leaders awareness on the benefits of the Bioeconomy and bio-based industries Mobilise and engage stakeholders to realise the potential of ASEAN Bioeconomy Offer Conducive platform To communicate and exchange information on gaps and challenges among ASEAN members on economic sustainability and how collaboration/cooperation can be established to further enhance and develop ASEAN Bioeconomy for the sharing of knowledge and fostering of collaboration on policy strategies, actions and joint activities to promote innovation in Bioeconomy within the ASEAN countries
