2 Attendees of workshops and seminars are eligible for continuing education credits. Friday, March 6 7:15 AM: Registration Desk Opens 8:00 12:00: Workshop 1 UFOs - (UnFamiliar Objects) on Slides Program and Abstracts Beth Sheppard, MBA, HT(ASCP) Ventana Medical Systems Artifacts are an inescapable facet of life in the histology laboratory. Often they are only a time consuming annoyance, but artifacts can have important technical and even medicolegal implications. It is just as important to prevent, identify and solve these mysteries when they arise. In this workshop three broad categories will be discussed from both the histologist and pathologist perspective: technical errors in processing, embedding, sectioning and staining; artifacts of diagnostic significance; and miscellaneous artifacts. The participant will gain the ability to identify unfamiliar objects and learn techniques to avoid them. A guide to interpreting and preventing common artifacts will be provided to each participant. 9:00 9:30: Scheduled Break with Vendors 10:30 11:00: Scheduled Break with Vendors 8:00 12:00: Workshop 2 Pigment and Mineral Staining in the Histology Lab Sarah Britton, MS, HTL(ASCP) CM William Beaumont Hospital, Director, School of Histotechnology, Royal Oak, MI This workshop will review the commonly used techniques for pigment and mineral staining in the routine histopathology laboratory. The difference between exogenous and endogenous pigments minerals will be explained along with classifications of hematogenous and nonhematogenous. The following pigments and minerals will be discussed in detail: carbon, asbestos, calcium, copper, melanin, iron and uric acid. Included in the discussion will be diseases associated with the pigment or mineral, staining techniques used and the mechanism of staining for each technique. 12:00 1:30: General Membership Meeting Lunch (Provided with registration.)
3 1:30 5:30: Workshop 3 HT Review Bob Brunner, BA, HT(ASCP) Senior Field Support Specialist, Leica Biosystems The goal of this workshop is to give the registry eligible candidate and seasoned histotechnologists an overview/review of the HT (ASCP) computer-adapted testing process. A general overview of the sub-test areas will be covered and advice and resources will be given to help the exam candidate to manage study material and time accordingly. A study guide containing criteria published by the Board of Registry will be provided as well as a list of resources and study tips to facilitate an organized method of study. The seasoned technologist are welcomed to provide information on how their labs are currently doing those processes. Suggested workshops for students: Workshop 1 OR 2, and Seminar 1 1:30 5:30: Workshop 4 Getting the most out of your Automatic IHC. A Balance between Convenience, Cost, Education and Flexibility Steve Westra, BS Leica-Biosystems Division As a result of increased IHC volume or even a reduction in technical resource, many clinical labs are now moving away from the optimization of antibody concentrates in preference for ready to use for their routine immunohistochemistry. Although this trend has resulted in improved workflow and reduced error handling it may have an adverse effect on the operational costs of IHC labs as well as reducing the educational requirements for histotechnicians to adopt key skills in the art of antibody dilution, optimization and validation. In this workshop, the key benefits and disadvantages of using either ready to use or antibody concentrates both in a manual and automated setting. We will then review the steps required in order to effectively optimize an antibody concentrate covering topics such as: datasheet interpretation, choice of diluent, detection, suitable storage conditions, pipetting techniques and antibody titration protocols and the use of controls. It is also important to stay educated on new antibodies as they become available. We will present some recent additions as well as their utilities. Some antibodies have been around for a while. Are we educated on some of their utilities? In today s IHC laboratory finding a balance between convenience and cost will only help laboratories retain their flexibility but most importantly help their histotechnicians retain valuable skill. 2:30 3:00: Schedule Break with Vendors 4:00 4:30: Scheduled Break with Vendors 5:30 7:00: Reception in the Exhibit Area
4 Saturday, March 7 7:15 AM: Registration Desk Opens 8:00 12:00: Workshop 5 Histology in Botswana, Africa and Cervical Cancer Screening in Botswana, Africa Histology in Botswana, Africa Jean Mitchel, HT(ASCP) Waunakee, WI In August of 2013 I had the great privilege to travel on an ASCP sponsored 10-day African histology mission to Gaborone, Botswana. As part of a four person group, we were asked to evaluate the country s main histology laboratory, their work flow, quality of work and propose methods to lessen their extreme specimen back-log. Our additional assignment was to teach a group of seventeen students, with wide varying degrees of laboratory proficiency, all aspects of histology that included: fixation, grossing, processing, decal, embedding, sectioning, staining, special stains, block/slide retention, tissue disposal, IHC and all forms of troubleshooting with six classroom days to accomplish this. This is the experience of our busy, hectic and very inspiring ten days in Gaborone, Botswana. Cervical Cancer Screening in Botswana, Africa : Barbara McGahey Frain, MS, SCT(ASCP) CM Instructor, IU Health, School of Cytotechnology In May of 2014 I had the good fortune to be selected by the ASCP as part of a 10 member team traveling to Gaborone, Botswana. We were asked to screen a back-log of Pap smears so that women needing treatment could proceed with their follow up. Many of the women were HIV+. With HIV now considered a survivable disease, cancer is the 2 nd most likely cause of death in Botswana. During this session we will compare and contrast testing strategies and treatment options for cervical cancer in Botswana and the USA. We will compare the progression of cervical cancer between HIV+ patients and non-hiv+ patients, and discuss some of the public health methods used to prevent the spread of HIV. 8:00 12:00: Workshop 6 Latest Advances in IHC Misty Lackey, B.S, Senior Technical Consultant, Cell Marque Corporation, Rocklin, CA This workshop discusses new and novel markers associated with immunohistochemistry and how they fit into appropriate corresponding panels with other more established markers. The application for each antibody will be discussed as well as an overview of antibody technologies and factors affecting the quality of the IHC procedure including detection and other protocol concerns. 9:00 9:30: Scheduled Break with Vendors 10:30 11:00: Scheduled Break with Vendors Door Prize Drawing 12:00 1:00: Lunch on your own
5 1:00 2:00: Seminar 1 Taking a close look at AFB and GMS Ezanya Ibiang Obeten, BS, HTL(ASCP) Norton Healthcare, Louisville, KY This seminar will discuss the AFB and GMS stains. These stains are used routinely in the laboratory to test for bacteria and fungi. The discussion will include, the differences between AFB and GMS staining procedure, the hazards associated with these stains, and how to protect yourself when performing these stains. 1:00 4:00 Seminar 2 Exposing the Code: Understanding Anatomic Pathology Medical Coding Beth Sheppard, MBA, HT(ASCP) Ventana Medical Systems Understanding the implications of complete and accurate coding of pathology services is essential if a laboratory is to get proper payment and avoid audit consequences. This workshop is designed for the experienced coder who will discover where the biggest errors occur when coding pathology procedures with an emphasis on bundled vs. unbundling specimens. A clear understanding of procedure codes for surgical pathology, cytology and molecular pathology will be investigated to include an explanation of modifier use as an essential component for appropriate payments. The latest CMS policies and coding changes for 2015 will also be discussed. Time will be allotted for audience question and answers. 2:00 2:30: Break No Vendors 2:30 4:00: Seminar 3 The Histotechnologist s Role in Molecular Testing and Specimen Preparation Diane L. Sterchi, MS, HT/HTL(ASCP), IU School of Histotechnology, Curriculum Developer This seminar will discuss the basics of histotechnology for molecular preps from the histotechnologist's and pathologist's perspective, describe specific considerations important to the preparation of specimens for molecular testing, and discuss specifics regarding preparation of slides and scrolls.
