2 Legumes are multifunctional crops with extraordinary importance for the agriculture, environment and culture in Mediterranean countries However acreage is continuosly decreasing and we are importing legumes for food and feed

3 Cooperative multidisciplinary initiative to promote legume revalorization in Mediterranean agriculture

4 MEDILEG Project Breeding, agronomic and biotechnological approaches for reintegration and revalorization of legumes in Mediterranean agriculture The main objective of this project is to develop methodologies to improve grain legume plant material of high yield potential, resistant to major diseases and abiotic stresses, suitable for sustainable farming systems. The selection of genotypes carrying the desired genes will be greatly facilitated by using molecular markers tightly linked to the desired traits. In this sense, pea will be used as a model as the best characterized crop legume. (I) Definition of ideal genotypes, (II) Studies on biotic constraints (III) Studies on abiotic stresses (IV) Marker Assisted Selection (MAS) (V) Epidemiology (VI) Exploitation of alellopathy for disease control.

9 WP0: Research coordination of the consortium Financial management will be handled directly between national researchers and their national funding organizations in each participating country. T0.1: Facilitate close interaction between the Partners being the single point of contact between the ARIMNet Call Office and the Researchers T0.2: Draw a Consortium Agreement in order to manage the delivery of the project activities, finances, Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) and to avoid disputes which might be detrimental to the completion of the project T0.3: Redirect specific parts of the project if required by the progress of the Work packages T0.4: Compile and submit reports/deliverables to the ARIMNet Office on behalf of the Research Consortium (M6, M18, M36) T0.5: Meeting calendar: kick-off, mid-term and final meetings

Most resistant accessions to be compiled in a joint disease resistance nursery to be validated in different countries using common protocols
