International Workshop on Harmonisation of GMO Detection and Analysis for Central and South America Foz do Iguazu, Brazil December 2009 ILSI International Food Biotechnology Committee - IFBiC The resource for science on agricultural biotechnology.
"The ILSI Experience: Advancing Science Underlying GM Sampling and Detection Methods Around the Globe" Elizabeth Hodson de Jaramillo, Ph.D. Profesora Emérita Pontificia Universidad Javeriana
Capacity building in biosafety, and articulation of protocols is crucial for biosafety evaluations.... molecular biology is a key tool for scientifically sound evaluations.
ILSI is a nonprofit, worldwide organizations whose mission is to improve public health and well-being and to advance scientific understanding in the areas related to nutrition, food safety, risk assessment, and the environment. IFBiC, the International Food Biotechnology Committee is an important source for science on agricultural biotechnology, a global leader in delivering training workshops on sampling and detection of GM products. It identifies gaps in knowledge; share basic science; and provide hands-on training in context of the local and regional needs.
ILSI is a neutral forum for discussing and advancing scientific issues that impact public health. Academic Scientists Industry Scientists Government Scientists ILSI is not a trade organization and conducts no lobbying activities. ties. ILSI International Food Biotechnology Committee

ILSI is a Global network of scientists Partner with FAO, WHO, and other government agencies Source of credible, scientific knowledge providing science for better public health decision-making Visit us on the web: ILSI International Food Biotechnology Committee
IFBiC Mission and Objectives Encourage use of sound science in decision making Address key scientific issues by collaborating with international experts Develop and publish scientific underpinnings for the safety assessment of foods and feeds derived from biotech crops Ensure that scientific information regarding the food and feed safety of biotech crops is available to the scientific and regulatory communities Help build global scientific capacity ILSI International Food Biotechnology Committee
IFBiC = International Partnerships ILSI International Food Biotechnology Committee
Outreach and Publications The key to the success of IFBiC! >30 workshops/symposia organized/funded 16 publications/reports, 1 in process, plus posters Publications recognized and cited by EFSA, Codex countries, OECD, others
IFBiC = Publications Marci Levine, mlevine@ilsi.org ILSI International Food Biotechnology Committee
IFBiC = Key Scientific Issues Sampling and detection methods Lack of accessible, current baseline composition data Nutritionally improved crops Performance of animals fed biotechnology-derived feeds Protein safety New Technologies RNAi and transcription factors Stacked events combining biotech traits via breeding Role of mammalian toxicology studies in safety assessment ILSI International Food Biotechnology Committee
IFBiC = Capacity Building and Harmonization Workshops on what detection methods can and cannot do 16 workshops, 20 countries, 180 students ~ 1200 scientists who develop, assess, implement Demonstrations of critical concepts related to sampling and detection methods Hands-on wet-lab training in DNA/Protein methods Brazil and Argentina, 02, 08; India 2x 03; China 05, 2x 09; Singapore, 08, Colombia 08; Chile 08 >180 students Partners: ILSI Branches, AACC, JRC, FAO/WHO, AVA, UNU-BioLAC Well received, many new & follow-up requests
Sampling and Detection Workshops- Topic Areas Agricultural-biotechnology. Local and International perspective How sampling detection methods are used in the actual supply chain: Seeds, field, grain, commodities, food, complexity: matrix, sampling, units, costs. Low level presence, International standards such as Codex, ISO Technical aspects of Sampling and detection. Sampling (seed, grain, processed foods) Protein & DNA-based methods quantitative and qualitative methods, reference materials, etc. Interpretation of results Validation and proficiency testing Design and implementation of a detection laboratory Other topics: Screening methods Approaches to detection of combined events (stacks)

Screening methods By Screening Shipment is tested using methods which detect multiple events Typically uses common elements Screening test PCR method for promoter, terminator or Screening process PCR for multiple events ILSI International Food Biotechnology Committee
Does 35S or Tnos positive mean GM is present? CaMV is commonly found in Brassicas A A positive result for the CaMV35s 5 5 may indicate the presence of the Cauliflower Mosaic Virus itself and not a GM event. Mewett et al. Maintaining product integrity in the Australian seed and grain supply chain the role of sampling and testing for GM events Australian NMI Brassica (cauliflower ) is commonly used as a thickener in soups (Colombia, and others).
