Mobility as a Service and Technology Platforms for Rural Transportation: Realization of Potentials Roger Teal DemandTrans Solutions
Mobility as a Service (MaaS): What is It? A Concept Integrated view of all relevant service options for a specific user trip On-demand access to service(s) of choice with no-hassle provider payments Necessity of ownership of personal mobility options potentially eliminated A Platform/Application Google Maps-like views of trip plans, service options, O-D times and costs Booking, scheduling, payments, notifications all included in functionality Technology platform that supports all of these functionalities An App Accessible from your smartphone for immediate use, tailored to your situation As easy to use as single function travel apps (e.g., Uber, UAL, Hotels.com)
MaaS as Trip Planning on Steriods Trip planning is the essential service but highly enhanced All mobility options integration of options into single trip plan Traveler-specific and situation-specific Memory of user preferences and prior trips Integration of service booking with selected trip plan Google Maps-like approach with additional functionality Payment integration as feasible, OTA-like w/multiple accounts Tailored to specific market segment opportunities
What MIGHT Be the Potential of MaaS? Key potential role: New organizing framework for collective and/or publicly available transportation services Universal Mobility as a Service all such transportation services are accessible via Google Maps/OTA-like functionality Open data infrastructure is critically important if this to occur New mobility modes such as ride-hailing, car sharing, bike sharing, electric scooters etc. should be incorporated Platform is the key, provides the seamless consumer front end and the deep back end transactional integration
What Do We Need for Effective MaaS? Platform-centric perspective on transportation services Open data and/or transactional data specifications Public sector integration of/with multiple public and private sector mobility services at planning and payment level Multiplicity of organizing and business models can be incorporated into overall MaaS framework Work trips, community transport, health care-related, others Service access via APIs, data and payment integration are key
Rural Mobility-as-a-Service Solving public transport in low density areas Solving the public transport in low density areas THE CHALLENGE SOLUTION OUTCOME The lack of transportation services is a problem in sparsely populated suburban and rural areas. Many times a private car is the only realistic option to commute. This dilemma is the focus of ALPIO-project in two Finnish towns, Porvoo and Loviisa, led by Sitra, Finnish Innovation Fund. Kyyti provides real-time ridesharing for a fleet of minibuses driving flexible routes between local hubs.. Rides are ordered and paid with one easy-to-use Kyyti App (Android and ios). In Porvoo and Loviisa this solution was introduced as Kyläkyyti. All Kyytisolutions are available with white label options. Routes and schedules are now optimised to get passengers to right destinations at the convenient time. Drivers receive route manifests and updates in real time to serve customers in optimal order.
Kyyti platform architecture Mobile/web interfaces for the user Kyyti App Mobility Servers Planning and optimizing trip and days Booking and paying for services Asisstance when using services Mobility history data Web interfaces for the ecosystem MaaS Ecosystem Interface Registration and agreements Product and Price Management Use and feedback reports Etc. 8 FlexDenmark Illustrates the Power of Platforms for Transportation in Rural/Semi-Rural Areas FlexDenmark has demonstrated that it is possible to use a technology platform to progressively scale flexible transportation services building on existing resources in the public and private domains Relationship between number of journeys and local population
Basic Principle of FlexDenmark The PTOs buys resources vehicle hours and/or vehicle trips provided by taxis and buses--from external private companies FlexDenmark s platform combines all the planned trips generated through different remote online ordering modules used by a number of authorities The platform optimizes the utilization of that capacity using a real-time planning (scheduling/dispatching) engine The platform handles all back office functions of invoicing and payments to authorities and service providers
Components of FlexDenmark (2016) Sponsors/ Funders Transportation Trip Makers Delivered Service Regional and Local Authorities 545 in 6 regions PTOs, municipalities, hospitals, human service agencies, school districts, health care organizations Service Providers 773 private companies taxis, vans, small buses, regular buses 5160 vehicles Unique Customers 241,000 (annual) Passenger Trips 5,425,000 (annual) 18,000-20,000 trips per weekday
Flex Process Evaluation Booking Optimization Execution Accounting Reporting Determine eligibility and describe the citizen Describe trip from A to B with time and service restraints R E Q U E S T E D T R I P Resource cost optimization Traffic Control & Contract Management P I C K U P C O M P L E T E D T R I P Cost Allocation & Invoicing / Payments Quality Assurance & Follow-up
Platform Services: Supply and Demand Resources Requirement Forecast Evaluation Trips Contractors Inst./Dept. PTOs Procurement Booking Municipalities Resource Description Resource Optimization Vehicle Management Vehicle Execution Accounting Accounting Reporting Reporting
The Flex Concept Combines different many different authorities, illustrated by the bricks below - But citizetrip needs and customer level of service needs are not uniform they have different service needs and other requirements. Rehabilitation General Health Flex Each trip is described with all of its needs, requirements and flexibility (or lack thereof). Authorities are able to adjust the flexibility (i.e. the time or service) which will increase or decrease utilization.
The Flex Concept Comparing the flex concept to the classic game of TETRIS, then becom way of explaining Flexction of planning and optimization. The goal of ame is to create complete lines of bricks without any gaps, which in this avvehicle schedule generated with minimum of wasted vehicle time. The core system also identifies and books a resource which fits the requirements to execute the plan. Identified Resource (Vehicle) is Booked
The Flex Concept During the day of execution, future trips are continously optimized to ensure a minimum of gaps in the planning. Completed trips Current trips Future trips When all trips for a given day has been completed, the core system also calculates the cost for each authority on a per citizen level. Cost Allocation
