V.19 introduces a new Run Anywhere architecture that enables all users of ARCHIBUS Web Central and the ARCHIBUS Windows Client/Server platform to effectively communicate and collaborate using Web Services. The new Run Anywhere architecture of ARCHIBUS V.19 lets multiple work sites and service providers interact directly with enterprise workflows -- eliminating the need to extract, duplicate, or data and files. The new architecture supports the working requirements of both workgroup-level and enterprise-wide users, improving collaboration and operational efficiency. Taking advantage of this new Run Anywhere architecture, the V.19 release offers access to new or enhanced Smart Client software applications that give organizations the tools to help improve their environmental stewardship as well as their bottom lines. 2011, ARCHIBUS, Inc. 3 The Case for Adopting a Run Anywhere Web Services Environment The reason for adopting a Run Anywhere Web Services environment is rooted in how users needs and expectations have changed. And one important change resides at the single-user and the workgroup level. Even small workgroups now use the Web to eliminate and phone calls by having their internal customers get it themselves submit requests, check status, download reports, and interact with floor plans. By becoming Web-enabled workgroups, Real Estate, Infrastructure, and Facilities (RE/IM/FM) departments can grow their deployments bottom-up reaching out to internal customers and enabling their service providers to become active business-process participants. These departments needs for additional Webfacing features is great. Another change is at the enterprise level. Within larger organizations, RE/IM/FM departments are not just running their own tactical applications but, instead, are operating a mission-essential segment of the enterprise resource planning system. These departments need collaborative software applications, high-end scalability, and centralized security. Moreover, the demographics of the workforce are changing. The workforce is much less a set of people sitting together in a centralized office and much more a network of providers and enablers linked by service agreements. These users all require broad access to a solution. And they need all features to run everywhere. 5 The Run Anywhere Application Suite Provides Power and Flexibility The Run Anywhere suite complements rather than replaces the existing Windows Client/Server suite, which ARCHIBUS, Inc. continues to sell and support. In a single deployment, you can use the Windows Client/ Server suite, the Run Anywhere suite, or both. It is entirely your choice. The Run Anywhere suite s new set of programs are essentially analogous to the Windows Client/Server components, however the components of the Run Anywhere suite will, as the name implies, run anywhere. The Smart Client, for example, is the analog to the ARCHIBUS Windows Client/Server program. The Smart Client Extensions for AutoCAD and Revit are the analog to the existing Windows Client/Server-based Overlays. The set of Run Anywhere Applications is the expanded and updated set of ARCHIBUS Web Central applications. However, the benefit of the Smart Client is that it enables one to run these Web Central applications on single-user and on small workgroups, as well as in enterprise Web deployments. The Smart Client provides everything you need to run the Web Central applications in one convenient package. This is true even on single-user and workgroup workstations. The Smart Client also has a wide variety of bulk data editing, visualization, CAD and BIM features as well. The distinguishing benefit of the Run Anywhere suite of business applications is that all products within the suite use the ARCHIBUS Web Services to connect, in real-time, different business applications, work teams, and remote offices. The Smart Client The Smart Client rationalizes all of the ARCHIBUS commands to one ribbon bar. 7 The My Favorites list has commands for adding, deleting, and editing your favorite views. This makes it easy to keep track of those ad hoc views that you create on your own restricted data and fields leases for your account, rooms with cross-charge questions, etc. The New View menu is a list of tables in the database. You can filter this list and create a new view instantly from any of them. You can add multiple related tables to a view to get owner and standards relationships. When we look at how most power users use the Windows Client/Server program, we see they sculpt views and data as they go relating tables, adding fields, changing restrictions. And the new Smart Client makes this process very easy. The Drawing List navigation tab shows how commands that work with each tab are arranged. Here Open, New, Add, Remove, Properties are grouped with the appropriate Drawing List. The My Favorites and New View commands are grouped similarly. The grid has a wealth of features which end-users have been asking to receive. There are many other capabilities supported by the design of the Smart Client, but in terms of bottom line functionality, it speeds the work for which you most commonly use ARCHIBUS Windows Client/Server in a much more convenient way. 8 The Smart Client Extensions for AutoCAD and Revit The layout of the Smart Client Extensions for AutoCAD and Revit is similar to the Smart Client. All generic ARCHIBUS commands, such as Data Edit or Number, are combined into one Ribbon Menu. All process-specific commands, such as Draw Rooms, are on the Process Navigator. The Navigation tab shows up as an AutoCAD palette menu. The Navigation tab has the Process Navigator and the Drawing List. The image on the left shows a typical Smart Client Extension process with all of the commands you need to follow, such as drawing rooms or creating a jack plan, in one place. One might notice that the tab does not have hatching and highlighting commands. Those tasks now all take place in Web Central or within Smart Client views using enterprise graphics. The Extension has many of your familiar commands. Edit Data Multiple will filter for one particular type of asset if you window a mixed group of them. The Publish Enterprise Graphics command has a much improved progress dialog to show you which drawing and which rule you are currently publishing. Another nice improvement is the Reconcile command. If someone has worked on a drawing without using ARCHIBUS, the assets and the database can easily fall out-of-synch. The Reconcile command shows you side-by-side lists of the drawing and data differences. 9 The Web-Enabled Workgroup All that may sound great. But what, specifically, is the advantage for the traditional ARCHIBUS Windows Client/Server user in upgrading g to V.19? The main advantage is time. ARCHIBUS V.19 is a time-compression machine. For tasks like Preventive Maintenance or Cost Administration, the new, wizard-driven interfaces easily cut training time in half. Tasks which required hours of user training to master are now self-explanatory. Wizards automate tasks like setting up charts and reports. Visual interfaces and search consoles expedite the search for relevant data enabling instant action. Enterprise graphics indices graphically locate, correlate, and highlight assets far faster than you can by loading full drawings or BIM models. Features, like paginated reports containing drawings, generate faster in the Run Anywhere environment. And you can share 100% of your views and reports instantly over the Web. Let s look at how the Run Anywhere suite achieves these efficiencies by looking at the differences in some of the most commonly used applications. 10 One example is the Enterprise Move Management application s group move form. In Windows Client/ Server, there is a set of pop-up dialogs that may not be intuitive to some. In the Run Anywhere suite, you can now use the Web Central wizard for group moves. It s easy to create and edit move orders in bulk and easily spot errors or inconsistencies. Best of all, department managers and administrators can log-in directly to their move projects and avoid lengthy pre-move meetings and expensive post-move re-work for missed items. Another example of these differences is Preventive Maintenance. In the Windows Client/Server product, there is a grid interface with actions. g Again, with the Smart Client Run Anywhere application you now can use the Web Central forms right in single-user or small workgroup settings with wizards for set-up. 11 Another example is space management department assignment. In the Windows Client/Server product, you use the grid or the Overlay functions to make this assignment. But the Run Anywhere application provides the option to use the interactive form to quickly jump between buildings and floors and make assignments just by clicking on the room. Another example is the cost administration form. In the Windows Client/Server application, there is a grid where you have to load views and use certain actions in a sequence for the correct result. The Run Anywhere suite uses the Web Central Cost Administration wizard. This wizard lets you select owner entities in a tree, and then follow the schedule, approve, and review sequence through in an intuitive manner. 12 Equivalencies: Windows Client/Server versus Run Anywhere Applications There are equivalent Run Anywhere applications for each of the Windows Client/Server application modules. In almost every case, there is a wealth of new features that make upgrading beneficial for users. In addition to upgraded interfaces and logic, each application in the Run Anywhere suite can be used collaboratively on the Web. These are, specifically: Connection-level Telecom Inventory. While the jack and move-support is included in the Run Anywhere Enterprise Move Management application, the Windows Client/Server Telecommunications & Cabling Management application handles jack plans, backbone cabling, and connection-level inventories more comprehensively. 10 The #1 Solution for Real Estate, Infrastructure, and Facilities Management in the World

13 Strategic Master Planning. In the Run Anywhere suite, this functionality is handled in the Portfolio Forecasting application, which operates on the property and group level that most real estate managers use on a working basis. However, if space planners need a level of detail at the room and headcount level, it would be best to continue to use the Strategic Master Planning Windows Client/Server-based application module. Furniture Trials. The Run Anywhere applications include features for Equipment Plans, Jack Plans, and Furniture Plans. However, if you are doing Furniture Trials plans, you should use the Windows Client/Serverbased Furniture & Equipment Management application. Design Management. While the Smart Client Extensions for AutoCAD and Revit provide most of the asset and data connectivity features you need, the Design Management CAD features (walls, doors, room schedules, etc.) are available only in the Windows Client/Server version of the Overlay. The Run Anywhere suite supports cascading updates, data transfer, export to Excel, and all the essential technologies that you typically need to deploy. Specifically these are listed in the table on the left. The new environment has a large list of other advantages. One is the View Definition Wizard, which makes creating edit forms, interactive reports, charts, even paginated reports with highlighted drawings just a matter of following the steps. Run Anywhere also brings the Dashboard Definition Wizard and GIS features to the workgroup. The single user installation program takes care of everything that you need to get started. It installs Sybase Runtime and optionally SQL Server Express. It also installs the application server. You can get started just by pressing the Start Servers button. You can create your own projects right from the Projects dialog, same as in Windows Client/Server. Once you install one full workstation, you can install peer workstations just by running the remote client setup program, which installs just the Smart Client and the Smart Client Extensions for AutoCAD and Revit plug-ins. You can also use that workstation as a host and URL links to internal customers so they can view dashboards, make requests, and get reports. 14 Both Smart Clients and Web clients need only a URL to connect. They do not need any database server name or any other protocols running. Multi-user installation is simple. An automatic remote workstation installation establishes peer workstations. If you update the master workstation, the dependent clients will prompt the user to install the update. Existing users may say that they are intrigued by the new environment, but they do not want to convert all their separate ARCHIBUS deployments right away. Sites can use the Run Anywhere suite of products in parallel with the Windows Client/Server suite of products. The two suites can run against the same database. They can round-trip drawings back and forth. Existing users can deploy the Windows Client/Server applications for one business function, and Run Anywhere for another. Or they may wish to switch data development over to Run Anywhere but continue to use the Client/Server for quarterly reporting for the near-term. The only caveat: run your calculations in one suite or the other. For instance, the Run Anywhere Space Planning & Management applications have additional chargeback features. You should either use the Client/Server chargeback, or the Run Anywhere chargeback. The Web-Based Enterprise V.19 includes another set of enhancements at the enterprise level. 15 V.19 has a wide variety of features to simplify the life of a wide range of titles within enterprise deployments. BIM and CAD teams will find training time greatly reduced for new personnel because of the newer, streamlined tools. Business Process Owners who are involved in deploying and maintaining ARCHIBUS at a site will find the lower overhead of deployment and centralized management time-savers. IT Departments will appreciate the centralized feature for managing all ARCHIBUS workstations even CAD workstations. And enterprise graphics and Flash charts and dashboards give their internal customers stateof-the art interaction and visualization without the need for extra plug-ins or protocols. Enterprise Architects will find that the Web Service infrastructure that brings ARCHIBUS functionality to so many clients is also available to call or be called by other systems in the enterprise stack using standard Web Services. The Localization tool can translate the Smart Client and the Extensions the product is identical except for a separate language Dll. This will let us keep the power user and CAD tools in synch with Web Central. The Smart Clients can also change their language of choice. If you choose a new language for the Smart Client, Web Central will use that same language for its forms during your session. V.19 delivers a large number of other improvements. If there is one umbrella category it would be fit and finish. Anything that users have found an irritant or a drag on productivity was targeted. One barrier to upgrades is merging site-specific application files and new stock ARCHIBUS files, so an Application Update wizard was added to do the merge. Another barrier centers on upgrades to project databases, so the Update Project and Schema Wizards were improved. There are additional key wish list items that have been included, such as Prev/Next functionality, Smart Searches on enumerated values, particularly localized enumerated values, View Definition Wizard clean-up for localized languages. V.19 has improved drawing hatching, contrast, and includes dynamic text display in both on screen and printed drawings for better legibility. And many of the Run Anywhere applications have been upgraded to the new View 2.0 format, providing benefits that include an improved user interface and faster run times. 16 Going Green Rhetoric Versus Reality Most professionals engaged in real estate, infrastructure, and facility management are concerned about environmental stewardship, and want to make a real difference in their own organizations. And they know that any initiative they undertake must not only drive results to the bottom line, but must also be: Substantive There tends to always be a long list of projects that require both time and money. Addressing only those priority items that will truly make a difference can help generate success and the subsequent support to undertake additional projects. Measureable If an organization cannot measure the results of its actions, senior management has no way of knowing whether the actions taken produced the desired results. This in turn will make it more difficult to justify and fund future initiatives. Funded Organizations are facing too many vague green standards, checklists, and initiatives that give no direction as to the likelihood of remediation success, and no structure for funding them. If there is not a realistic budget or identification of funding source, it is unlikely the project will be implemented. They include the following Web-based applications: Green Building delivers a centralized, consolidated information framework to specify environmental criteria and protocols, calculate net greenhouse gas equivalent impact for buildings, report on carbon footprint change over time, and manage the certification and recertification process. Environmental Sustainability Assessment helps prioritize environmental remediation actions to the most substantive projects with the greatest potential for management attention and funding. Energy Management can help lower costs by at least 5% through reduced overall energy consumption and decreased peak-time usage. Hoteling drills to the root of the problem: using too much space. Reducing space reduces energy costs as well as the carbon footprint of the building, and decreases the emissions associated with commuting. Asset Portal answers the need to increase asset utilization, and optimize acquisition and/or disposition practices. Improvement in these practices helps reduce unnecessary consumption of resources, which is both harmful to the environment and to an organization s financial results. 17 Green Building Managers are increasingly being tasked with achieving carbon footprint goals and managing environmental sustainability certification scores for individual buildings or across their entire portfolio. ARCHIBUS Green Building aids those managers by delivering a highly versatile and robust Web-based platform to provide the information framework for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and managing the environmental sustainability certification and recertification process.
