3 CMMS Background of System Development The Coke Machine Monitoring System i.e. CMMS was created in a joint development project between PCS Engineering Oy and SSAB Europe Oy (former Ruukki Metals) The R&D project was partly funded by the Government of Finland and the pilot facility was installed at the SSAB coke oven plant in Raahe, Finland. One of the main objectives of the project was to permanently increase and maximize the productivity of the coke oven machines at the SSAB Europe COB#1 and COB#2 In order to achieve today s ambitious productions targets at a modern coke oven plant, the operation of the coke oven machines has to be disturbance-free with automatic operation, i.e. the automation-degree of the coke oven machines has to be maximized.

4 CMMS Technical Overview The CMMS solution for coke oven machines allows the plant employees and management to monitor the automation degree of each individual coke oven machine. The system records all disturbances and interruptions in the automatic operation sequences, sub-sequences and even individual steps within each sequence. Monitoring and recording each disturbance event, allows the system users to identify the most common and critical interruptions of automatic operation mode for each machine individually. All of the data collected from the machines by CMMS is recorded in a database. The database content can be viewed via a state-of-the-art user interface.

5 CMMS Technical Functionalities CMMS allows the users to review and monitor historian and real-time data regarding the automatic operation of the coke oven machines. 6 CMMS System Structure CMMS system communication is based on Industrial WLAN communication between the coke oven machine PLC s and Battery / Coordination PLC. Data is collected from the machine PLC s and transferred to the CMMS Application / Databased Server.
