1 Hewlett-Packard Company 2015 Colour Printer/MFP Line of the Year Hewlett-Packard 150 Route du Nant-d Avril 1217 Meyrin 2, Geneva Switzerland For the fifth year in a row and the sixth time since 2008, HP has captured BLI s Colour Printer/MFP Line of the Year award. Over the last four years, no other traditional A4 OEM can even approach these statistics for colour hardware: of the 22 HP devices we ve tested since 2011, 21 of them were both Highly Recommended and took home a BLI Pick (the full list of winners can be found at the end of this article). From inkjets for SOHO environments to A3 hardware for high-volume workgroups, HP continues to have the most complete colour portfolio and its devices have proven that again and again, from both a performance and features standpoint, not to mention the value they deliver. Moving beyond speeds and feeds, HP has been ahead of the curve with giving users the tools they need to drive success, regardless if they re in a home office, a global enterprise or anything in between, said BLI Senior Analyst for Printers and A4 MFPs Marlene Orr. With its LaserJet hardware and Officejet Enterprise devices, HP brings more consistency to its lineup than any other manufacturer, particularly in terms of its open platform and its intuitive Easy Select control panel. On the IT side, administrators can simplify printing by deploying the HP Universal Print Driver (UPD), while helping lower cost of ownership through access controls available in HP Web Jetadmin. 2 A Solid Foundation of Reliability The 22 HP colour devices tested over the past four years ran a cumulative total of 1,109,500 pages with no misfeeds recorded and no service required. Simply put, HP gave an amazing reliability showing in our extensive testing, said BLI Senior Writer Carl Schell, noting that adjusting drawers/trays, clearing jams and replacing toner/drums or ink are among the easiest we ve seen. HP devices are always up to the task, and when the simple routine maintenance procedures are added to the equation, downtime will be minimal. Going with the Flow Scanning from any HP device we ve tested over the past few years has proven to be an easy experience. But in its quest to keep pushing the boundaries of what an imaging device can be, HP hardware with the Flow designation adds a number of extra layers to an already strong scan package: a built-in keyboard (for easy typing at the control panel) and a DSPF (scans both sides of a document in a single pass), both of which are standard; auto-colour scanning; and support for a multitude of file formats. Meanwhile, integration with the subscription-based HP Flow CM (Content Management) allows users to capture, archive, search, and share documents, which can be accessed anytime, anywhere as the solution is set in the cloud and offers a mobile app. Users can collaborate on documents, too, making changes and then re-syncing the files so they re up to date. Other impressive features include OCR and indexing capabilities, as well as 256-bit AES encryption for data transfer and password-protection for access control. Businesses are always on the lookout for tools to help them with streamlining and improving workflows, and once again, scanning is an area where HP is never content, Schell said. To be able to include features that other OEMs would offer as options is a major driver in the value discussion. Mobile Movement HP is clearly a leader when it comes to printing from smartphones and tablets, and it offers many methods for mobile users to take advantage of. HP understands that flexibility, simplicity and security are critical for mobile printing in the workplace, and its broad range of mobile print offerings fulfills the need, from the microbusiness up to the enterprise level, Orr said. For starters, most HP hardware supports HP eprint. eprint is a tool that allows for files to be sent to a device s unique address and then output. Other mobile print options include support for Apple AirPrint, as well as apps for Windows Cluster Server, Citrix Server, Terminal Server, and iprint (these depend on the device). The eprint App is compatible with ios devices, and the eprint Home & Biz App is available for Android and Nokia, while eprint Enterprise is a server-based system that sits inside a company s firewall and lets users securely print from their mobile device to any printer or MFP on the network, regardless of brand. HP NFC/Wireless Direct, which earned a BLI Winter 2014 Outstanding Achievement award for Innovation, utilises NFC (near-field communication) to connect to a device, after which print data is transmitted securely via a peer-to-peer Wi-Fi connection, thus eliminating the potential security risk of unauthorised access to a corporate network. To heighten security even further, the NFC/ Wireless Direct accessory can be managed through Web Jetadmin, and users can be required to enter a password before connecting to the device.

3 Eco Responsibility Five of the 21 devices covered by this award (LaserJet Pro 400 Colour MFP M475dw, LaserJet Pro 400 Colour M451dw, Officejet 6700 Premium e-all-in-one Printer, Officejet Pro 8600 Plus e-allin-one and Officejet Pro 8100 eprinter) won BLI Outstanding Achievement awards for Energy Efficiency (winning devices must receive 5 stars for both the Energy Efficiency category and the overall rating in an Environmental Test Report), while eight of the others scored 4.5 stars overall. Standard automatic duplexing and toner-save and auto-colour modes are basic ways to be green, but HP takes environmental friendliness further through proprietary technologies, such as Auto-On/Auto-Off, Instant-On fusing, and ColourSphere toner, all of which reduce power consumption and also play a big part in helping lower TCO, Schell said. Redefining Productivity The days of only looking at productivity in terms of speed are in the rearview mirror today, it s about the interaction with a device to quickly and easily get jobs done. For walk-up activity, the customizable Easy Select control panel (on LaserJet and some Officejet hardware) makes life extremely easy for users, especially for scanning to or network folders, and having a touchscreen on even low-priced inkjets is also something that few manufacturers can match. At the desktop, users have access to preconfigured shortcuts in the drivers and can also save their own, while the UPD offers the luxury of outputting to any HP device on the network from a single interface. HP OXP allows organisations to deploy solutions that can save time and increase efficiency by streamlining multistep workflows and limiting usage. For example, through optional modules, the HP Access Control suite lets administrators track output at the device and user levels, as well as establish print policies for an entire business or by department or employee and implement pull printing, which can not only heighten security but also cuts down on wasted toner and paper for printouts that sit forgotten in the output tray. And for inkjets that don t include the open platform, web-connectivity and downloadable apps are a simple way to add functionality and help users to work more efficiently. OXP is like a gift that keeps on giving because organisations can outfit hardware with tools that can increase productivity, tighten security and, ultimately, help save money, Schell said. Delivering Value Just as the days of measuring productivity by just the stopwatch are behind us, so, too, are the days of judging value by price alone. BLI s value assessment includes not only a cost of ownership analysis against competitors (based on purchase price and cost per page over a three-year lifecycle), but also takes into account other less quantifiable features like solutions-capability and web-connectivity, as well as eco-friendly features that help conserve resources and administrative controls to help track and limit usage. All of these factors weigh heavily into reducing output costs, thereby increasing value. When it comes to management utilities, HP has long been considered the gold standard in the imaging industry. For fleet management, Web Jetadmin is among the most robust tools of its kind offered, allowing for remote monitoring and troubleshooting of devices, configuring user permissions to limit access to specific functionality (for instance, colour printing and copying), and set devices to go into sleep mode at predetermined times to reduce power consumption and lower cost of ownership even more. HP Colour Access Controls allow administrators to track and

4 limit colour printing and copying done on HP devices. By using the embedded web server, Web Jetadmin or the UPD, administrators can further limit or prohibit colour usage by user, group and application type, which further reduces costs. HP s colour printers and MFPs deliver exactly what business users want: reliability, flexibility, ease of use and great performance, with the added benefit of eco-friendly features and robust utilities to track and limit usage, which ultimately lower costs, Orr said. 5 About BLI Pick Awards Twice a year with its Pick awards, BLI gives special recognition in each category to those products that provided the most outstanding performances in BLI s exhaustive lab tests, and once each year, it acknowledges the vendors whose overall product lines are judged to be the best in their respective categories by virtue of their cumulative test results. BLI s awards stand alone in that they are based on a rigorous battery of lab tests that takes approximately two months to complete. The evaluation includes an extensive durability test, during a portion of which each unit is run at the manufacturer s maximum duty cycle.
