1 Overview HP ProLiant HPC (High Performance Computing) Linux Partner Software Options is a set of software products from HP partners that complement or expand choices beyond HP's branded offerings. These offerings can be used in clusters defined as Cluster Platform configurations, or in customized clustered configurations. These offerings are certified to operate on HPC clusters of HP ProLiant servers running Linux distributions. A wide range of qualified options ensures flexible choices, simple implementation and successful results. The foundation of the Unified Cluster Portfolio is the HP Cluster Platform, standard, integrated implementations of cluster designs that provides customers with a choice of processors, operating systems and interconnects. The HP Cluster Platforms (CP) 3000 and 4000 are built with ProLiant DL Rack Mount Servers and HP BladeSystem servers. The CP3000SL features ProLiant SL200 series servers as compute nodes, and the CP4000SL is available with ProLiant SL165s nodes. Servers are integrated, customer-ready solutions that enable rapid and confident deployment of High Performance Computing (HPC) clusters.hpc Linux Partner Software Options are products specifically developed to address the need of HPC cluster sites. Red Hat and SLES HPC offerings provide users with affordable, commercially supported alternative to enterprise subscriptions for RHEL and SLES. The additional option of Atlair Engineering PBS Professional enables customers to easily incorporate a popular job scheduling option for HPC into their purchase and deployment from HP. 2 Overview The core functionality for any HPC cluster is provided by the underlying operating system. For ProLiant-based clusters, built on Intel and AMD technologies, HP offers specially priced Linux subscriptions from Red Hat and SUSE. These options are available as standard factory-installable options for HP Cluster Platforms, but are also available for custom cluster implementations (where the design and/or components may differ from the Cluster Platform implementation). Customers seeking a supported option for cluster management and provisioning should consider cluster - HP Insight Cluster Management Utility (Insight CMU), which operate across the Cluster Platform, and can be used with the RHEL and SLES options featured in this QuickSpecs, as well as with popular community distributions.. Please refer to the following websites for additional information on HP's cluster offerings: or Other complementary offerings from HP include HP-MPI (message-passing interface), and the HP HPC Linux Value Pack. HP-MPI delivers outstanding MPI application performance, with multi-core scheduling, broad ISV support, and support for multiple interconnects. The Value Pack includes the HP-MPI, Platform LSF workload management and Platform's application portal. Go to: for more information. OS and cluster management options are available as factory-installed options for HP Cluster Platforms, as well as the customerinstalled option with software download by customer. Their inclusion in the HP portfolio enables customers to source their whole solution from a single vendor, with options to ship together in a consolidated delivery. Cluster Platform Series Design and Configuration Guide and Orderable Options The Cluster Platform Series Design and Configuration offers the customer the opportunity to design and configure their own customer cluster from nodes to build a cluster to meet their own environmental needs. There is a Design Guide for each type of Cluster Platform: CP 3000and CP3000SL - based on Intel Xeon technology, and CP 4000 and CP 4000SL - based on AMD Opteron technology. System Software and Consulting and Integration Services Consulting and Integration Services HP Enterprise Services part numbered offerings that are geared towards a Services led engagement model for current partner products. These products require an order thru HP's C&I organization. Also available from the Enterprise Services organization are a series of professional service offerings covering site and architecture planning and analysis, training, and deployment of Cluster Platform or custom clusters. These offerings must be coordinated and ordered thru Americas C&I organization (contact HPC_Quote_Request@hp.com) or EMEA HPC engineering consulting@hp.com Linux Distributions HP supports the enterprise versions of both Red Hat and SUSE distributions. In addition, the Red Hat and SUSE High Performance Computing license agreements provide for low cost enterprise operating system software on these clustered configurations. Please review these part numbers in the Partner Offerings section below. Other Linux variants such as community distributions or vendor Professional offerings have also been tested on these machines but HP does not offer support for these variants. 4 Linux Operating System Offerings NOTE: The HPC Linux Operating System options are available only for nodes being deployed in HPC clusters. The HPC subscriptions share the same technology as used for either the Basic Red Hat Enterprise Linux or SUSE Enterprise Linux. Like standard enterprise Linux subscriptions, subscriptions are non-version specific. NOTE: Red Hat requires that the standard subscription RHEL server-based product be installed on the head node. For SLES, registration for the head node is included in the BASE HPC SLES offering along with 8 compute nodes (for a total of nine nodes). Originally Professional Job Manager developed at NASA Ames in the early 1990s it now runs on many of the world's largest HPC systems, including TSUBAME 2.0. PBS Professional captures the policies that define the service level agreements of an HPC service and helps ensure maximum system utilization and job throughput as well as shortest execution time. Balancing the business and political pressures from end-users, system administrators and service providers is a complex challenge. PBS Professional delivers the most capable workload management solution to enforce the business and political rules and provide a scalable, robust, deterministic service. PBS Professional provides full support for the latest GPGPU systems. To optimally handle GPGPUs, PBS Professional is able to capture the physical relationships between GPGPUs and their closely coupled CPUs. This ensures that when physical resources are being assigned to jobs the closest GPGPUs and CPUs are chosen which helps reduce execution time by reducing latency between components. PBS Professional has unique capability to decompose complex systems into smaller entities, vnodes, which are able to run jobs. This provides benefits to both exotic shared memory systems and GPGPU systems. Smarter power and cooling systems are becoming mandatory. PBS Professional is able to provide energy-aware scheduling with our Green ProvisioningTM which allows idle nodes to be powered off and then powered back on as workload increases. PBS Professional is fully integrated with the most commonly used MPI libraries. Two of the major benefits of having a closely coupled workload manager and MPI environment are: Full MPI clean up when jobs are killed. System administrators no longer need to worry about zombie processes left behind when MPI children have lost connection to their MPI parent that has been killed. Full job accounting. 5 PBS Professional Value Proposition Customers want to buy high performance computing solutions that ensure all computing resources are used effectively and wisely, and that are easy to use and manage. PBS Professional significantly increases how well valuable and costly HPC resources are used. PBS Professional schedules workloads - from individual jobs to complex applications as well as the required computing resources - from memory, disk space and computing nodes (including GPUs) more effectively, increasing overall utilization. Altair and HP work closely together to ensure the respective technologies are fully integrated and provide compelling value. PBS Professional is fully integrated with HP's Insight Cluster Management Utility (Insight CMU). In such cases where multiple operating systems or software stacks can be requested by workload, or green scheduling policies are required, PBS Professional is able to use Insight CMU's capabilities to deliver this complex dynamic behavior. The combination of PBS Professional and Insight CMU captures all the site policies for dynamically changing the compute environment and removes any system administration overhead from supporting such complex systems. Full monitoring is available through CMU's graphical tools. NOTE: All third-party software products supplied by HP shall be governed exclusively by the manufacturer's license terms and other documentation accompanying such third-party software. HP Customer Service Offerings Customer Support HP CS provides on-site hardware break-fix support and remote remedial software call center support. NOTE: HP Services 10 incident care packs are offered for SLES, and can be sold per cluster, The care packs are valid for only one year. Please see HP Care Pack Services in the Related Options section of this QuickSpecs. CS off-site software services will provide and assist level 1 and 2 support for Red Hat and SUSE Linux operating system offerings. Level 1 is defined as everyday user/system administration issues. Level 2 is defined as issues relating to installation and configuration problems, along with other problems not being solvable by following the Vendor supplied documentation. The CS software support team will work in parallel with the appropriate Vendor and development groups to address level 3 and 4 support escalations: Level 3 elevations typically will require patches and modifications to be generated by the Vendor to resolve deficiencies in the product. Level 4 elevations deal with enhancements in functionality of the product and will typically be included in future releases. The offerings are covered thru optional partner support agreements which are ordered as additional sku offerings. Customers are asked to contact the respective partner support contacts when the software is delivered either stand alone or pre installed to confirm the service and support linkages and to alert partner support organizations of software receipt. Please contact the appropriate ISV for support conditions. Software contracts can be also obtained to meet any and all needs of customers, to include remedial break/fix along with migration and upgrade planning along with a full suite of proactive deliverables. These services can be obtained through HP Care Pack Services to cover all needed levels of services for a limited number of instances or through software contracts from Bronze up to and including Platinum/Custom levels of service.
