1 The Roadmap to Automated and Efficient PC Deployment Lenovo s approach to efficient, automated, and effective device deployment using Automated Deployment Services (ADS) White Paper for GOVERNMENT Is your PC deployment process IT staff intensive and dependent on manual tasks? Many agencies are finding that automating the deployment process lowers costs, speeds deployment, increases end-user satisfaction, and frees IT resources to perform more important strategic projects. All of these benefits make automation the right answer for agencies of any size.

2 2 Lenovo Automated Deployment Services (ADS) provides the new capabilities, processes, and automated tools that are at the heart of a more efficient and effective device migration process. ADS is a device migration methodology that is driven by Lenovo s expertise, broad experience, and best practices developed over thousands of customer projects. This roadmap examines the five key stages of the process for updating your deployment activities using ADS. Using this document This roadmap examines the five key stages of the Lenovo Automated Deployment Services process: Stage 1 Deployment strategy session Stage 2 Design a new deployment solution Stage 3 Design the automation processes Stage 4 Build design/test/approval of the new deployment process Stage 5 Execute on the new automation and deployment process Stage 1 Whiteboard strategy session This stage of the process focuses on evaluating the agency s unique deployment process. Provide documentation of current deployment process Identify what role, if any, IT technicians will play in the new deployment process Provide other needed input on process requirements Identify key areas of opportunity in current process that can be improved, streamlined, optimized Determine what software and content is already installed on the new device and what can be downloaded from IT infrastructure Detail the role internal IT technicians play in the process Identify an optimized process across the agency, for automating deployment across all divisions/teams Complete preliminary version of new deployment process Discuss current and future time allocations and dollar savings

3 3 Stage 2 Design a new solution configuration Using Lenovo Imaging Services, a comprehensive solution is designed, built, and then tested and verified by Lenovo before being installed in manufacturing. This solution can be deployed on all systems and with an option for self-installation or technician-installation, with support for custom installation through a self-install deployment menu. Provide any existing software image including applications, drivers, and other elements Document all necessary localization needs Provide necessary information to load applications at the factory Verification of the customer s image(s) Test initial software image including drivers and remediate any issues Create options for localization Create a Smart Image with global language, operating systems and applications that is driver independent and supports all the customer s purchases of Lenovo hardware Create integration with the client management infrastructure to drive actual deployment and privileges for individual users Stage 3 Design the automation processes One of the most important benefits of ADS is the ability to automate manual deployment processes. Provide details for any existing automated activities used in the current deployment process Provide information on BIOS and system customization needs Provide information on what the current process is for set up including PC configuration, driver and common application installation, encryption, etc. Identify how automated processes will address the customer s specific needs Identify specific FirstBoot tasks that can be automated Define the process for automating the user-enabled system migration for both for new systems (ADS) and for migrating the existing PC s old OS to the new OS (InPlace Migration) Define the process for automating BIOS customization

4 4 Stage 4 Build design/test/approval of new deployment process At this stage, the customer will review the new process for deployment. Some customers may also do a pilot project with a small group of users once the initial version of the process is working. Provide details for integration with Active Directory and other aspects of IT infrastructure necessary to support ADS Provide a comprehensive list of applications and licenses for them Provide a comprehensive list of security configurations used by the agency Test the pilot and provide input Assist in remediating any issues from internally developed software Provide software drivers from Stage 2 Develop the process for providing unique scripts for each end-user for inclusion with each new device Develop the process for factory integration of necessary components of automation Test the entire factory integration process including; image load, Sysprep, First Boot, and encryption and remediate any issues Test all drivers that are part of the image load and remediate as needed Test all security tools as part of the image load Test the end-user automated deployment tools Test integration with Active Directory/Configuration Manager Test all application installations Ensure that the customized ADS messaging process, unique to each user, is implemented accurately Develop a secure disposal process for devices at the end of their life

5 5 Stage 5 Execute the automated deployment process The newly tested and completed process for deployment is now ready for roll-out. The changeover may be made all at once or phased in across agency units or geographies. Communicate any modifications needed to the deployment process Prepare the agency with communications Deliver end-user documentation for communicating the new deployment process Deliver documentation of all aspects of the new ADS user-enabled deployment process Manage any deployment related issues together with Lenovo s single point of contact project management Manage change in adding new drivers and other elements of the software image Continue to test the software image as changes are made Continue to support new devices that will be added to the ADS program Summary Moving from legacy deployment processes to an automated deployment process provides huge benefits to both IT and end-users. Consistent processes that are constantly subjected to quality control create a far better experience for everyone involved.
