3 4:10 Bridging Discovery and Development Information - Tracking Project Portfolios Case Study from Idea to Launch Peter Thadeio, Research Portfolio Analyst-CVMED, Pfizer Research Portfolio Group, Pfizer Inc. As a new group in Pfizer, we were required to produce a seamless portfolio view utilizing information from two siloed legacy systems, from Development and Discovery IT. With no IT support and no budget, we had no choice but to deliver in a very short timeframe. Using commercial tools available to all employees within Pfizer, we made the connection between the systems and now have the ability to produce a consolidated view of the entire portfolio as well as generate automated reports for multiple TAs and sites for senior management from Idea through Launch. These reports have been adopted by partner lines as well as for multiple purposes, including project workflow and forecasting. This represents the first time that this data has been fully integrated and viewable. A case study will be presented of how data was disseminated from development into discovery and the processes involved in bridging the two worlds so that the portfolio became transparent from idea through market. Two completely different software systems housed the data with no clear way to integrate it. Project Management offers the stability of a rational and logical process for managing work in both co-located and virtual research institutes. A Department of Energy Genomics:GTL sponsored research project, initiated at three national laboratories and seven universities from coast to coast and comprised of 75 individuals collaborating within three matrixed core research groups: Applied Environmental Microbiology Core (AEMC), Functional Genomics and Imaging Core (FGIC) and Computational and Systems Biology Core (CSBC) is examined. We have found that there is a balance between tight project management to create synergy, focus and continuity to the project and welltracked individual-investigator-driven initiatives and followup that must be struck to maintain creative engagement and productivity of the project team, all while remaining vigilant against scope creep. It has been our experience that frequent and rapid communication at different levels with different media is critical to exploiting the scale and diversity of the team project s capabilities for this multidisciplinary, multiinstitutional collaboration.
